Removed the Rear Sliding Tray-5TH Gen Limited

Thanks for this...I don't so much need the clearance, but that tray lip that sticks up drives me nuts. Completely worthless, and since I keep the seats down 90% of the time for my dog, it just gets in her way. I love my 4Runner, but I really wish Toyota hadn't invented a problem then a solution for it.

I just used mine to load a 200lb file cabinet into my t4r yesterday. Would have been a lot harder without the sliding tray. I only really use it for this kind of thing though...never day to day use. Sometimes I use it for my tools when working out of the runner. Doggie definitely doesn't like jumping all of the way up on that thing, but he has learned to use the bumper as a step to get there.

Would be nice if it was more easily removable, like the seats in a minivan.

Herculined Tray and Pulled Out Carpet.

Yesterday I finally got my s#@t together and pulled apart my sliding tray. I had been kicking around the idea of putting Hurculiner down on the tray and on the bed underneath for a while now. I absolutely hate the carpet back there and as my dogs are in the back nearly every day the majority of my time spent cleaning is hunched over the tray and the back seats trying to pull Ridgeback hairs out. :ybrick: I followed the excellent write up by Harper7 and after ripping off the carpet from all the various pieces (huge PITA) I put down two coats of Herculiner on the tray, the bed underneath and all the pieces that cover the storage box. If I could do it over I would not have covered the plastic on the tray, might have looked cleaner. Oh well. Next step is to find a rubber mat that will last and cut it to fit. I have a Weathertech mat that covers the sliding tray but its to slippery for my dogs.


Still have to figure out what to do about the back of the seats. I know that some Runners have plastic backs to the seats but the parts department here in Hawaii doesn't think they exist, even though the one I test drove had them in it. WTF.

Toyota probably didn't design the sliding cargo tray for that intended reason, but that feature can be utilized for mounting a fridge...Yes,it does take a lot of rear cargo space and probably is not practical for some...but i know guys who mount drawers back there on 4th gens to accommodate all there gear for off roading.*Notice the sliding tray for the fridge*

I'm having a storge unit built for the back to enable me to put all my stuff out of sight.. the unit will include three sectons, 1 for work, 1 for my golf clubs and the third for all my stuff I can't live w/out.:bash: I will post some pics when I'm finished.

This should be stickied, as it's a great thread for those wanting to either put in or take out a sliding cargo floor.
I'm one of the ones who's looking for a LE with a sliding rear cargo deck as the 3rd row seat was NOT an option, you lose sooooo much room with them and really who's going to sit in the back except kids?
The sliding rear floor is usfull as far as I can see and an extra inch or two is something I can live with.

Thank you Harper for detailed post i used it in reverse.
bought tray on ebay , installed in 30 minutes, no issues.
i like it, i think Ill fabricate some big drawers and mount it on top of the tray.
tray and it`s frame takes 4 " of vertical space, no more. maybe with insulation it takes more but I had to pull off insulation, otherwise tray will not fit I think insulation on limited and sr5 is different

It appears someone previously in this thread had the same thought as I do, to bring the rear area of my TE to the SR5 (no tray, no 3rd row seats) style - in a factory style/manner. Has anyone actually executed on this yet; and if so, what additional Toyota/other parts were required? It seems this should be fairly easy to do (tray and mounting brackets all out; some new liner/carpet from the SR5 in). Anyone?

SR5 carpeting required. I did opposite way, installed tray in SR5- loving it. it takes 5 minutes to take it out if I even need it.

Dealership is tell me that SR5 rear carpet piece is ~$400! Not sure if that is the real price or I'm being held hostage!!!

Easy to build platform

Took out my sliding tray and made a compartment for some amps and a dsp. Very easy job. Plywood on bottom bolted to floor with the rear sliding tray mount hole and bolt. 2 1/2" x 3/4" for side rails. Spaced as required to fit amps, etc. MDF for top. Contact cemented upholstery carpet. Very solid and now have a much more useable and flat floor. Anyone want the tray (minus 2 mounting bolts)? Problem is I'm in Hawaii. U pay shipping, it's yours.

Materials costed $40. 2 hours of semi skilled labor. If you're a harper7 or ant man, 1 hour job.

Thanks Harper7 for the instructions. Was about to take a sledgehammer to the tray the other day. Couldn't get a plasma TV to load flat/standing up b/c of the divider. And, in turn, it wouldn't fit. I know some folks love the tray function but not me. This is coming out. I was skeptical when I purchased about the sales person telling me Limiteds don't come w/ a normal (as I call it) trunk space. Now I know.

the TE's dont have that trail lip.. i think just the SR5 and Limited's do

hey i noticed that flashlight mounted back there.. i have a picture i've been meaning to post up for everyone as a suggestion so you don't need to mount anything to any panels in case you want to take it out later on.. i just stuck a Maglite in the driver door handle.. and then one to the right by your hip next to the seat.. but like below the cushion mainly up against the drive train bump in the center.. got the smaller one in the door and the BIG one (my beat stick) tucked away

Now that I have the sliding tray out??

I took out the sliding tray and storage box, sprayed bed liner thinly over the floor, and added DynaMat to insulate. Now how do I support a 3/4" Baltic Birch
floor? Ideas?
