Gears & Lockers Install

As promised, 4.88 gears and Dual ARB Air Lockers are in!

What/Why:
I chose 4.88 gears because I do more highway driving than offroading, and 4.88s on 35s is very close to the stock ratio on 31s. 5.29s would have been great offroad, but horrible on the highway.

I chose Front and Rear lockers, even though I will rarely ever use the front. The old adage of its better to have it and not need it. It will come in handy for snow wheeling though! You better bet the rear locker will get a workout.

Everything was purchased from ECGS (east coast gear supply) They had the best prices by far!

Parts/Cost:
$1,475 - Front 7.5" Clamshell differential w/4.88 gears and ARB Air locker
$1,535 - Rear 8" V6 differential w/4.88 gears and ARB Air locker
$0 - ARB high output compressor CKMA12 (tax season deal for free compressor)
$35 - ARB EZ Tire deflator
$35 - ARB Tire inflation kit

Tools:
-Jack & Stands
-12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 21mm, 35mm sockets
-10mm, 12mm Alan hex head sockets
-E14 torx socket
-etc..

Time:
took me 8 hours to swap the diffs and run the air lines and another 1.5 to install the compressor.

Yet again the ROOMY 2001-2002 engine bays come to the rescue. I did remove the PA speaker since I never use it...

Nice man. You've gotta be itchin to get on the trail. I'm pretty set on 4.88 gears when I order mine up. I was gonna wait. I purposely waited till after May 1st to get back on ECGS site figuring the free compressor deal would be gone and I'd wait till the next one. ARB extended the damn deal till May 31st. Maybe it's a sign. lol

Do itttttt. For what its worth, if you want to step up a level on the compressor ECGS will credit the value of the free one you get towards a bigger one.

I will be installing my ARB rd132 soon and had a few questions for you.

1. which FIPG did you use? I was thinking of coating Toyota paper gasket with grey gasket maker, but I think FIPG may be a better option.
2. how heavy was the 3rd member? Any tips on removing it safely. I am also concerned about accidently pinching copper tubing when inserting it back in the housing.
3.One of the main reason that is holding me back from installing locker is the fear of removing axles. My axle seals seems to be in good condition and I am worried that I will damage them in the process of removing axles. Did you replace your inner and outer seals while the axle shafts were out?

Ill be at the Lafayette cars and coffee tomorrow morning.

1. Toyota differential FIPG
2. its a heavy sum*****, especially with the locker in it. I would say 80 lbs.
3. I did not replace any seals, just be careful when removing and installing the axle shafts, don't let the weight of the hub and axle rest on the seal.
 
Damn! I can't wait until the day I'm regeared and front locker. Super jealous right now. Enjoy all the fun your going to have with that new setup!!

Amen to that, I'm more likely to get struck by lightning than to remember to take pictures during installs... Rig is looking great, you're gonna fly with those gears!

Added a camp table to the CBI swingout!

What/Why:
CBI offers a table as an option when you order the bumper, but at the price of $175, that was more than I was willing to pay. I was able to do it for less than half that cost.

I always planned to just add my own, and here it is!

Parts/Cost:
$14.50 - 36"x12" steel shelf (Link Here)
$20 - 2x Rubber bumpers (McMasterCarr 9546K532)
$15 - 2x Hinges (McMasterCarr 1549A59)
$11 - 2x 18" Cables w/ eye ends (McMasterCarr 30345T147) [16" would have been perfect, but the next smallest size they had was 12"]
$6 - Non-marring latch (McMasterCarr 1863A21)
$4 - Assorted fasteners (used M5 bolts on the hinges and latch and M6 on the cables and rubber bumpers)

-Wrenches
