rochmpr Rev. 4 - Broke (Build) Thread

since you didn't ask about 35x12.5R17 Trail grapplers at 34.84x13.19... :fencing: FYI, I did have to add fat spacers on the rears to clear the resis. They are heavy a a mo-fo too. With the beadlocks I think each corner is somewhere around 130lbs...

I tried to steer away from anything over 13" wide. I would love an 11.5 wide in the 35 flavor, but that's not out there.

i think i missed it but what skid are you running with the dimple dies? did luke fab that up for you?

also, as the only one that I'm aware of that runs 35s with the stock suspension - save yourself the headache and stay with 285s or get long travel so you can clear them

It's the front skid. When I went to install the Bud Built full set, the front skid would not line up with any holes and conflicted with the KDSS, even though I bought and received the right set. Bud would not do anything and insisted there was nothing wrong with them. So Luke ended up fabbing up that skid plate real fast.

I like better than the standard skids.

And where's the fun in that!

It is time to start looking into new tires. I have had the Toyo MT's in LT285/75R17 (34.1X11.6) since I put the lift on at about 1,500 miles. They have been great tires on the trail and no real complaints for the road. Only complaint is the weight when it comes to getting the spare into rotation.

I have been researching the tires listed below and and considering the Cooper SST Pro and Nitto Ridge Grapler. Oh, believe me, I am all aware about fender bite, BMC, etc. I have beat, pounded, cut and am now looking into cutting the fender flares up to get these in there.

My question is to those who have run these, how have they performed, likes, dislikes.

 1. BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 - 35X12.5R17 (34.8X12.5) @ 67#
 2. Goodyear WranglerMT/R w/ Kevlar - 35X12.5R17 (34.8X12.5)
 3. Cooper Discovery SST Pro - LT315/70R17 (34.57X12.6) @ 66#
 4. Nitto Ridge Grappler - 35X12.5R17 (34.76X12.6) @ 65#
 5. General Grabber X3 - LT315/70R17 (34.4X12.7)
 6. Toyo Open Country MT - LT315/70R17 (34.6X12.7) @ 78#
 7. Goodyear Wrangler MT/R w/ Kevlar - LT315/70R17 (34.7X12.7)

Thanks

I still like the 305 R17 MTRs at 34.1 x 12.2 64#. no clearance issues... Not sure how many miles I have on them, but all good so far. Always want bigger though... But they almost rub as is.. so no going bigger until I get the LT installed up front and even then I will probably stick with these for a while. Just a great all around tire IMHO.

Sounds about the same as I am currently running, just a touch wider. The old MTR's were great. Thanks for the input.

no but for real. you can't turn when your suspension droops with 35s. even with all the material that i removed from the firewall its not happy. the way the LT systems get away with it is they shift the WMS an inch forward and move the scrub radius 2 inches further out from the frame so there is plenty of clearance. If you had the means to buy the Camburg 3.5" suspension vs everyone else +2 and could swap in a rear axle that was 7" wider so your OCD wasn't freaking out you could easily run 37s with minimal trimming.

I'm currently running the STT PROs in 315/70/17. I've had them on for about 8K miles so far, and they've been great. I thought my previous MTRs were going to be a hard tire to beat, and I really didn't want to do anything different. I got a really good deal on my Coopers, and the Goodyear's 315s were priced a ridiculous amount higher.

I don't seem to have any issues with them. I've cut a pretty good bit out, but my rub is pretty minimal from lock to lock compressed. Like everyone else has said, LT will get you further, but that's not in the plans for now.

Yaesu?

Hey, a bit off topic but I was wondering if you have any regrets with your Yaesu cross band ham radio? Is it hard to navigate through the menus? Have you used it much on your adventures? I have a Yaesu handheld HT and cant believe how awkward the menu navigation is and how poor the instruction manual is.

I really like your build thread. You have skills and seem to find the time to do stuff that I think many of us only think about.

HAM is somewhat complicated other that the direct comm portion. The Yaesu is very complicated, but, I really haven't readybthe instructions, except the APRS portion.

I wish I could get out more, but you gotta make the most of any day you can. Adventure is what you make of it, and it does not always need to be off-road, in a rig or away from home.

I need to check in here more often. Your weekend adventures (views) looks amazing.
I need to really check out the East sierras more now.

As for tires, like mine STT Pros, the softer the compound, the better the grip, down fall wear out faster. Fitment, each ride is different as what you'll have to cut and chop. Yours seems to be built for more accommodating than mine (aftermarket parts).

Great rig you have there!

9/30 Slick Rock & Deer Valley

Saturday was a long day and an early start. Met having fun in Sacramento at 0530 and headed up the hill to meet up with v_man in Arnold at 0730. Everyone was prompt and we filled up as this was the last stop for gas. From there, we headed up to the South side trail head and aired down and headed into the trail a little before 0900.

From here on, it was a heck of a trip. It wasn't too long before Leonard tried to follow Vince up an obstacle and got a little stuck. We pulled up the strap and freed him for a new line, (lesson - do not follow a SAS on 37's over every obstacle.) From here, we were at the stair case. Leonard and I opted for the by-pass, and we watched Vince come down.

After Vince, Leonard and I headed down the bypass, which is challenging and requires a good line. Leonard made it without backing up, I was not as fortunate.

From there, it was on to one of the many stream crossings for the day.

We continued on and had a good time. There were a few other spots that posed some difficulty, but we all made it through. We only passes one group while on the trail. We were off the trail before 1130 and then headed up the pass to Hermit Valley.

Once we arrived at the Deer Valley trail head, we stopped for a quick lunch. Deer Valley recently just officially opened back up. Just a couple weeks ago, there was a work day where they stabilized the stream crossings and eliminated the ability to drive out into the meadow.

I believe it was about 1230 when we headed into the trail. We paused for a moment while a group in front of us were making their way through the Gate Keeper. Then is was our turn. In typical fashion, v_man made quick work of this obstacle in his well 2nd Gen, having fun was next and made it though with-out incident and then my show. A few spots from Vince and I was through quickly, too.

From there, this trail was the trail that just kept giving, all the way to the other side. Long uphill boulder fields, tight squeezes between trees, which exploded by drivers side mirror. Spots between a rock and a hard spot, obstacles that would have been a little easier had that large rock not been in the middle of the trail.

We were off the trail a little after 1500 and on out way home. Made it home by 1800. I was quite a day! It was great, weather was perfect, 50° - 55°F, we all made it without any major incidents, great company. Looking forward to doing it again.

That looks like a great trail. Deer Valley is one I want to run! Not sure if I will get a chance before next season though. No free weekends for me for a while. :fish:

It was a great trail, but man, it just kept going. Just when you thought it would ease up, a tough obstacle, tight squeeze large rock in the middle. I hit every piece of armor at least twice, front bumper, rear bumper, sliders, lower links and skids, every underbelly skid plate, muffler, rear diff, frame. Luke would be impressed with the flat spot on the tube steel slider kick-out.

Barrett and parts of the Rubicon are like that too. Fun!

Hey, I thought I was supposed to follow Vince. :loco:

There was a few spots that didn't get tagged this time.
Deer Valley definitely was obstacle after obstacle.
Sure was a fun and great day.
Thanks, rochmpr v_man.

Nice, looks like a fun time. I'm hoping to hit up Deer Valley sometime soon.

It is a great trail with great scenery. Having a spotter and good line will help, but be prepared for a slow go. I highly recommend having a small group and not attempting this trail solo.

This season is quickly coming to an end for the high sierras, but we are lucky that this trail will be open again next season.

A couple of weeks ago, while greasing the suspension, I found that the drive shaft was hitting the gas tank skid. I thought I had fixed this once, but it appears the fix was not enough.

This weekend, I dropped the skid and started cutting. I cut the entire edge off along the shaft , ground off some extra metal and the rewelded the edge back on. I ended up moving it about 3/16". At the very end, where one of the mounting holes are for the bracket, I moved this area back a good an additional 1/2". Have everything welded back up and welds ground flush. Next, I need to reinstall the skid and beef up the hanger support closest to the diff.

Been having the same problem also. Had cut out the rear bolt location and just weld the hanger on the plate and reinforced. Noticed each time I go out, I have had to cut more each time along the plate. Still need to do some more from our last run.
