Seeing a bunch of nice 4wds running around an off road park like that reminds me of animals in the zoo. Yeah, there's some rocks to climb on, maybe a pond to splash in, and a little space to stretch the legs, but it's not the same as roaming the "wild".
We are definitely blessed to have so much public land to play on here in the western US.

It's funny you say that because I was just thinking it last night. When I got home from work I was watching [MENTION=57546]4-Ripcord[/MENTION]s video trip reports. His group did around 500 miles & you just can't do that on the East Coast. This summer I'll be trying a newer park called Anthracite Off Road in PA. It's double the size of Rausch Creek @ 6000 acres, less developed & more room to get "lost" & you can camp out there overnight. Anything decent is a 3hr drive away for me. When you guys have aerial shots from drones it makes me even more jealous of the beautiful country.

How far of a drive was Rausch from you?
I've wanted to go but it is almost 250 miles one way.
If you venture up towards NH and VT there are endless legal public roads to explore. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to try it

Rausch is 3hrs from me. For you you should make a weekend out of it since it's so far. You can camp at Rausch but it's not nice. There are a few nice camp gounds near Rausch & some have cabins if that's your thing.
Do you have a web site that shows those roads? I'll make a trip up there. Public roads can be done stock, nothing to be worried about.

On my next trip I want to go to raush. It’s like 30 mins from AOAA. Which is 2 and half hours away from me. Maybe we could meet up ? When I went to AOAA. I got a weekend hotel for $200. Had pool with Jacuzzi. Everyone that camped... got rained on, no good bathrooms or showers. So I was happy lol. Especially my girlfriend. And good free breakfast in AM

The nice thing about Rausch is that it has something for everyone. Trails are from easy to very difficult. Green, Blue, Black & Red. The Greens run all through out the park & then you can take the harder trails of your choice according to your skill level. The only problem with being out west is that you can go for miles & miles without hitting anything technical. I do Blues with open diffs but Blacks are really for locked with 35's. I did one Black trail that I got on by accident. It was hairy AF & I'm scared of heights but my truck in 1st gear - L4 crawled over everything. :becky:
We'll plan something, just keep a look out in the NE 4Runner group.

That's a good counterpoint. Don't get me wrong, if they had something like Rausch around here I would make use of it, especially to test any changes to the rig. It must be nice to have that kind of trail selection all in one place.
The harder stuff out here is definitely "destination wheeling" for the most part, and you usually have to choose the type of trail you want to run before you leave the house.

Over the winter of '15 - '16, I read a lot of rust threads. I also started researching rust converters & encapsulaters. Even though this truck was well taken care of by me over the years, I was starting to lose the battle with salt. The more I wrenched on my truck the more things I saw underneath that concerned me. The first thing I wanted to tackle was rinsing out the frame rails & spraying Eastwoods Internal frame coating in there. Sounds easy right? It's now almost 2 years later & I'm still not done with the frame. This post will have an anti-climatic ending but many up-coming posts will cover the battle with internal frame rust. I started a thread on this but never finished it.

I decided to rinse out my frame. There was so much more dirt, mud, silt, pebbles & rust flakes in there than I ever expected. I wish I had pics of the little sand piles in my driveway but the hose washed them away before I had gotten my camera ready. This is just with my garden hose, my pressure washer was down at the time but I did end up fixing it by the end of the Summer.

The frame needed a more closer inspection than just a rinse & rust proof coating. I put my fingers in every hole & checked every inch of the frame that I could. It was in really good shape in most places & you could feel the smooth paint. The area's in front of the LCA mounts are the spots where you could feel the metal coming off the walls. That's where the dirt, water, salt & brine build up. The open rears I'm sure are scary looking to people South & West but it's still solid. It's all wire brushed & painted now & it looks great.

I started to drill an extra drain hole in front of each LCA but my old 1/2" bit was too dull & taking forever. If I only knew then what I know now. Now I sharpen all of my bits on the fly with my angle grinder next to me. Live & learn!

It's hard to see but dead center of these pics in the grass are big rust flakes not bark. These were pushed out of the drain holes by my fingers. A garden hose doesn't do squat.

Shoot, I live in the south and I want to coat the inside of my frame. I'm probably just going to spray it with used motor oil though.
Every time I go wheeling, I rinse out the frame afterwards. So much sand and clay comes out.

In that frame cleaning thread I started I recommended that even people who dont live in the rust belt rinse out their frames. Once they're filled with dirt they trap moisture & will rot out from the inside. Albeit a lot slower without salt & brine in there.

As I discovered more & more rust flakes I thought about different ways I could get them out. I took these magnetic strips from work & slid them into the frame. They did pretty good but the larger flakes got knocked off pulling the strips out of the frame.
