SCS wheels or TRD Pro wheels?

If I do swap my wheels someday man it is a tough choice between the F5’s and Ray 10’s . But I’m definitely leaning towards the easy to clean wheel the F5’s. Also they do look bad with that deep dish look!!

Wheels & Tires

My Off-Road Premium should show up at the dealership in 3 or 4 weeks so this discussion is really helping with my thinking concerning upgrades to wheels and tires. I have read several posts by folks running 285/70R17s on the TRD wheels. My concern is the fact most tire manufacturers (at least the ones I'm considering) all recommend a wider wheel. Since there are a number of wheels that provide that width AND have a backspace measurement at or near stock, that seems to be the way to go.

So, my current thinking is an 8" wide wheel with a 4.5" backspace.

Does anyone see any problems with that approach?

I went from the Pro wheels on 275/70 KO2s to the 17x8.5 -10mm SCS Ray 10s on 285/70 Ridge Grapplers and have had no regrets. The hardest part is getting the SCS wheels, so good luck!

Are you running wheel spacers with the SCS wheels as well?

I am indeed. I bought them (SpiderTrax) when I was running my Pro wheels and put them on with the SCS wheels. BUTTTTT, even after BMC, removal of mud flaps, fender liner mod, and bumper trim, I'm still rubbing on the rocker panel, so I'm taking them off. The offset/backspacing from the Ray10s is just too much to also run spacers.

If you're interested in them, let me know. $170 for all 4 spacers (located in Austin, TX) - they have about 900 miles on them. I paid $225.

PM sent!

I went with the Icon Rebound in a 17 x 8.5 inch. The lift will be installed soon but it still clears with stock size Falken Wildpeak AT3W's. The wheel offset is 0.

they make the ray 10 in -38 now also, and in 9 inch wide now.

I bought a set of the Pros on the 40% off sale. I really like the look of them, but since getting them I've been dragging my feet deciding on tires, and during that time my stock 13 Trail phone dial wheels are really growing on me.

Anyway, I put one the of the TRD wheels on my bathroom scale, and it was 25.4lbs. Not sure how that compares to the other wheels talked about here,

TRD wheels = 26 lbs
Stock OR wheels = 31 lbs

My new tires General Grabber ATX-p = 44 lbs
Stock GrandTreks = 39 lbs

So with my new combo TRD wheels+GG ATX-p, net gain/loss ="0". :typing:

This combo was what I was aiming for. How do you like the ATX so far? Did you post about about it, or do you have any pics?

Here are a couple of pics. Have had trouble balancing but that is an unfortunate shortcoming of the 4runner...you can read the threads on that subject. There is flat spotting after drive and park so it takes a couple of miles to smooth out. Here are some ratings on a 1 to 5 scale;

Noise low speed: 2.5
Noise high speed: 1.5
Ride comfort: 4
Side looks: 5 - best on the market to my eyes, white lettering outside
Tread look: 5 looks like it means business

Have not driven in snow but plenty of rain use. Got a deal on pro wheels and trd front skid during 40th anniversary sale. Looks great with red center cap letters matching skid red letters. Will see if I can take a pic of front.

Stock OR wheels = 31 lbs

My stock TRD ORP 2017 wheels were 29 lbs.

Not sure if the grey/silver SCS Ray10's are not as popular as the black or gunmetal, but mine were in stock and shipped immediately. I love the color personally and have no regrets. Would choose the same color again.

Thanks for the info! So it seems like the biggest plusses of the tire is the looks.

I'm on the fence about it, I keep going back and forth with this or the Cooper 4S.

Just a note, BFG's K02s have a similar sidewall protection as Goodyear Wrangler "Kevlar", they just can't call it Kevlar. Not sure about General Grabbers.

The TRD wheel does have a slight offset, about 1/2 inch wider per side. Wea first ran them on a SR5 and now my new Pro has them as well.

I personally think the TRD wheels are overplayed. I see tons of them bouncing around town every day. When we purchase wheels for ours planning on Ray10s, just need to convince the wife to go for the bronze instead of black.

But as said before, get the wheel you like best or you won't be happy with it.

Can I use the stock lugs from my ORP with the TRD Pro wheels? Will the stock tires from the ORP work with the TRD Pro wheels?
Is there any negative of going from the ORP wheels the slightly less wide Pro wheels? I won't feel them on road feel right?

Not sure right or wrong but my dealer tossed in pro rims and kept the orp lug nuts. You can use the stock tires but personally would not waste my time, I ran stock rubber for 3 weeks and they suck. Wildpeaks ride better look better and are cheaper than oe tires

Wait does that mean you couldn't run the stock lugs? Stock tires are just a stopgap until I figure out which way to go. There is so much mod potential with the 4Runner so still searching the forum. Never heard of them but will look into them now. Thank you.

That's probably because Pro's and TRD OR's with the wheel/tire package come with them stock. On top of that they are easily sourced, readily available, fairly inexpensive, light weight, fit tires 33" and smaller with ease (what 90% of guys run) and they don't require any mods to fit.

I personally love the way they look, and they fit the vehicle quite well from a design perspective. I truly believe you'd see even more of them if they were wider than 7", that's really what kills it for most when they upgrade to aftermarket. I like the look of the SCS wheels as well, but IMHO those are just as "overplayed" as you say. With the popularity and sheer numbers of these 5th Gens on the road, it's quite difficult to pick a wheel that hasn't already been exploited.
