Secondary Air Pump Mod Validity

So umm.... I went to check the foam filter, and, well, I don't seem to have the air pump.

In the FSM the pump is under the 2TR-FE but not for the 1GR-FE

Can anyone else with a 2010 1GR confirm this?

Guess my dual battery install is getting $15 more expensive. I don’t know if this is really needed, but I guess I might as well do it while I’m moving the pump.

The air pump was added in 2013 to the 4Runner.

Where is this OEM foam filter? Do I need to open the injection body to remove it? If so, 4 torx screws around and one in the middle? My inlet cap had no foam in it:

Same here. Removed mine today and NO filter. Added a filter like the rest are using.

OK......

The link explained how to access the foam filter in Post #1.

Once the outer cover is removed, remove the torx screw in the middle of the cover (as shown in photo below), remove the cover and surprise, the foam filter is under the cover!
Remove said foam filter, install uni filter, reassemble.

Hope this helps.

Feels like an extra 5HP at wide open throttle now for sure :trophy:

Ok seriously though, I am perplexed how that little piece of foam in there sat and acted like a piece of filter media, the cap over the intake is an odd design as well I suppose it would suppress intake noise a bit at the nozzle? Who knows, anyway was a worthwhile reason to have a beer and spend a few mins under the hood. Here's some more pics if you haven't seen enough already in this thread >

That K&N one looks like it has a smaller overall diameter and fits better under the plastic cover. Mine had a hard time fitting back on with the Uni-filter, which was why I trimmed it.

I did this on the GX460, and it whistles like a fwording banshee after the mod on startup until the secondary pump kicks off.

Anyone else notice this?

Maybe the 1UR is drawing a lot more air from the pump on startup...

Thanks to troopa4life for bringing this topic up! I remember when Toyota extended the warranty for the air injection system on my old ’08 Sequoia.

After three weeks and one cancelled Amazon order, I finally received the Uni filter Wednesday and installed it yesterday evening.

A couple notes

The filter fit snuggly under the plastic cover but no trimming was necessary.
There is no whistling or other difference in sound.

Note for Californians
Changing this filter is almost assuredly considered a modification to the air injection emission control system. And though it will be a little less than five years before the 4Runner is required to have an emissions inspection, I purchased the Uni specifically because its black top it more discrete than the chrome lid K&N. I doubt any inspector will ever notice the Uni filter but I kept the OEM mushroom cap just in case it needs to be swapped back in.

Went ahead and did this mod yesterday, took about 3 minutes total, and I cleaned the secondary air pump while I was at it.

Here's the pump location under this trim piece

And here's the stock intake and "filter" mesh, such a shitty design in the first place.

Got it over the nipple and tightened it down.

Would have preferred the unifilter for the black look but I liked that the chrome K&N didn't require any trimming at all and fit perfectly under the trim piece.

The K&N has to add like 100 HP right?

I have the whistle. It only does it every now and then, and I don't notice it unless I have the door or window open when it does. I need to check and see if something is restricted.

To those that have done this mod, any preference/advantage to the K&N as opposed to the Uni filter?

The only difference is that the K&N fits under the trim piece without needing any trimming or cutting, that's why I spent the extra couple bucks for the K&N. There's no other real advantage that I can see
