Sick of drowning. Went and built myself a snorkel!

After killing the motor once and soaking my air filter through several times I finally decided to go through with trying a custom snorkel. Why custom? Not short on the $, just like to build stuff myself if I have a choice about it. And save a few hundred $'s at the same time. And I'm not really a fan of how some pre-fabs comes out of the fender at the airbox and goes down the fender externally.

The fender got pulled off first, then the airbox. Sealed the airbox and the nice little 90 deg elbow. Evaluated the situation and went to Lowes to grab the supplies.

5ft of 3" PVC $7

(2) 3" pieces of accordian hose, one with a rectangular end that fit perfect on to the factory 90 bend out of the airbox $6

1 Safari snorkel head (Ebay) $55

And odds and ends like zip ties, caulking, plastic primer, paint and the all important duct tape!:bravo:ready to go!





3hrs and under $100 and now I have much deeper capabilities. Be honest, look good?

Can you take some pictures of where you cut the hole? How did you seal that off?

Clemsonfan15- If you mean the hole in the fender, it's not sealed at all, just some 1/2" hose line slit down the middle to get rid of the ugly cut and to prevent chaffing. I's not the best cut hole in the world. 3" was pushing the fender out a bit in the end so I ended up with a different angle than expected. I also cut out the inner fender out and threw the old broken power antenna away. Nothing in the fender is at risk unless the tire carries a sharp stick around at the perfect angle and stabs through the flex pipe. Now that I think about it, I think I'll be making a new inner fender well.

Antenna was already F'd but now I have 1 station I can pick up. I have a deck that's Ipod only anyway so the only radio I ever listen to in Pandora

It looks awesome man. I do have one question. Snorkels are supposed to have drains right? Like if it was raining pretty hard wouldnt you end up sucking in some water? where does it drain out?

Nice mod but I have a (probably dumb) question. If the water is high enough to soak the air filter, won't it short the electronics (coil packs, MAF, etc.)? I know the Aussies run underwater (as they're mostly diesels) but will a T4R gas motor run under water? Are the electronics sealed well enough?

yes, you can run under water just fine as long as you have air, fuel, and spark. there is no distributor to get fouled up with the water, coil packs are pretty water tight for 5' or so and a couple of min. anything more than that the snorkel will take in water so...

Now that's ingenuity, put it to work and let us know how it holds up....Looks good to me, just not my forte as I'm not planning on submerging my rig to the point where i have to do some interior clean ups afterwards.

You will really need to add a bend to that somehow. See how tilted your head is when reading the safari text? That needs to be level because the angle is designed to repel rain among other things. You've rotated it directly level which is asking for anything and everything to come in. Turning it around always is an option but while forward you want the head to be in the position it was intended. Other than that its a great idea!

funny I was just building a pvc snorkel for my land rover, got most off it made up and then decided it would be super easy and better if I got a exhaust shop to make it that way I can have the top bent like it should.

Looks great man. You will love it. I have had water coming over my hood and been just fine. I killed one motor and said never again and got mine. I like the custom job you did though looks great man.. good work..

Were you able to keep your power antenna when you installed the Airflow Snorkel?

I didn't have to replace it but I did because it was broken... the snorkel is molded to fit around the antenna.
