Yeah, none of those are SUVs, including the Jeep.

They are technically CUVs. I.e. a crossover. Like a cross-dresser, but much less funny.

When Toyota needed a car to fill the 'SUV' void left when they announced the end of an era of the FJ
It became an "SUV" after the initial positioning of it not being an SUV failed.
When the Venza launched, Toyota placed it in the car section of their website (next to the Camry and Avalon) and even declined competing in Motor Trend's "X of the Year" competition because MT would not let it compete as a car.
I'd guess that Toyota would have preferred entering a '14 Highlander if the test occurred closer to the on-sale date. As it stands, the choices were a '13 Highlander (on its way out and the 7-seat capacity gets it nothing in the test); a '13 4Runner (given the testing criteria, it would not have been pretty); or Venza.
Note: I didn't read it closely, but it is strange that Nissan didn't send a Pathfinder. I'm wondering if the requirement was for it to be a 5-seater (hence the Murano, Edge, and Venza instead of the Pathfinder, Explorer, and Highlander).

My wife drives Venza, we both love it. drives like a car and awesome for Colorado winter driving. Cost about as much as my 4runner. Is it SUV? Hell no!
AWD Camry but better looking and more cargo space. power liftgate is my favorite feature. I`d pay to have that in 4runner but no avail.

Completely agree. The Venza is a very very nice car! It drives very comfortably and is pretty quick. I just couldn't allow myself to buy a wagon without RS or AMG badging for man-card's sake.

It doesn't matter what vehicles a publication matches together the Jeep always wins because editors are swayed by advertising. Motor Trend tested the WK2 JGC against the T4R Trail and basically said the Jeep was better in every way.

Venza's not bad at all imo.
Who cares what auto manufacturer's or magazine's classify as an SUV, the consumer should be smart enough to make that determination themselves. :beer:

It became an SUV like every other wanna-be when people confused a Sport Utility vehicle with a glorified hatchback with optional AWD.
SUVs will always be in my mind a body on frame construction, dedicated 4WD system(meaning at least a 2 stage transfer-case), logitudal engine with front and rear driveshafts, and will often be based on a truck platform.
CUV= Porked up hatchbacks and minivans they want to make seem cool.
