Figure it is probably a good idea to start carrying a CV axle repair kit with me...
Any recommendations on where to buy one?
I started looking on NAPA. They have remfg and new ones... They actually list different parts for right and left. Is that accurate?
Last time I checked(last week) they didn't make a CV axle for the 5th gen.

Although I did find reference to THIS a while back, which includes a valid point.
NAPA has three different cv's available for the T4R/FJ. They have two different brand new ones (part numbers 944082 and 944052) and one reman cv. The only difference between the two brand new ones are the boot material. The 944082 is listed as having a heavy duty boot and the 944052 has standard neoprene boots. Take it for what it's worth. Not sure about how heavy duty the more expensive boots are, but it may be worth the extra $10 or so.
The part numbers are the same for left and right, btw. I would recommend the new over reman ones. They are reasonably priced, don't require a core, and they have a lifetime warranty. I have purchased them for my Tacoma and wheeled hard on them. They last and I have not run into any problems with them.

Good point about bringing something to store the old one in ... I have found stretch wrap to be really useful for packing up dirty used parts for transport. I'm going to put together a CV replacement kit that would include an outline of instructions, tool checklist, and torque specs....I've pulled them before and it requires a few unique tools (like a 35mm socket)... A swap kit is pretty much required gear for an iFS rig on a remote trip in technical terrain.Exactly. I've talked to them a couple times since I'm getting ready to add the RCVs to my FZJ80.
I think for trail spares the Napa ones work ok since they are cheap and ready to slap in there. Easy enough to do the boot repair at home and reinstall the OEM axles with new boots later. The most likely fail is the boots not the actual axle. Just make sure you tripple bag those bad boys if they fail. Axle grease is stanky!

It looks like it would be an epic trailside repair! It's probably a good idea to print it out and laminate it if you really think you might have to do a trailside replacement.
That's what I did when I replaced my front diff.I was back on this topic and found my own post LOL. Just one comment on that link. I don't think it is the easiest technique.
You can just unbolt the LCA from the spindle and swing it towards the rear of the vehicle (after getting the tire rod, swaybar-llink, and speed sensor wire off )]

Has anyone broken a CV on a 5th gen or 2010+ FJC, yet? Not counting boots, but actual broken OEM joint or shaft?
From what I've seen, most cv's break due to wheel spin, then suddenly gaining traction. I would think since all 5th gens have a-trac, it would greatly reduce that risk.
