Hmmm. This might be an advantage for DanC's lumber approach to the problem. You just lower the spare the way you normally would and unbolt the lumber when you've got the spare in front of you. It's probably not as secure as the key lock approach, but maybe all you need to do is slow the thief down or discourage them.

to think I got mad when some1 ripped off my rear windshield wiper.... gonna do this mod next, to both my 4runner & tacoma. I ran out looking for my spares when I started reading this. thankfully they are still there ;-)
i called a few toyota dealers about spare tire locks and, no surprise, they were CLUELESS...

Now small update.......
Maybe some of you remember from my first post that when my spare was stolen there was one more 4Runner near mine and they didn't touch that one...Not for long. Last week they stole his spare too
Now that is funny! 
And I warned that guy that they would get his too sooner or later....
As for mine I called my insurance (Allstate :bash: ) and they will pay to replace mine spare..However I won't be getting brand-new rim from dealer but one that is called "reconditioned"and costs $109 .... I couldn't understand how they can give me some "reconditioned" rim so I called Allstate few times and now I know how they "cover" my truck.....:bash: Also An Allstate appraiser suggested taking my 4R to 'their" shop but I will take it to the dealer anyway.....That way I'll know that they'll do the job right.....
However I'm sure that if you ask them how much is going to cost you to replace stolen spare tire the will tell you right away $900 . . . : bash:ttman said:

What's wrong with using...
DanC's lumber approach and putting a lock on the tab that comes up through a bolt hole (on the lift plate?) Finally got around to looking at it and there is a hole for a lock in that tab. What's the negative to this? Personally don't see how they cut the thing in the first place. It's a tight space under there.
