I am enjoying my new 4-runner. I have pulled 2 people out of snow the past 2 days.Karma is good!
What do you recommend to use when pulling someone out - what kind of strap?

Recovery Straps - Tow Straps - Proper Usage
Ideally you would want a nylon web sling without hooks. This will give you some stretch as opposed to wire or chain. Shackles are always good too.

I recommend:
3" x 30 Ft. Heavy Duty Recovery Strap
For the price: $36 + tax. At 30ft away, it is unlikely they will mistakenly ram you. I use my trailer hitch. On their end, if it is a car, I generally use a D-Ring to secure the strap, if not you can just loop the ends to make for a hardware free pull.

We just got that blizzard here in Wi a week or so ago.
It was about a 20"er . I had no problems driving on or off road . Didnt even come close to getting stuck .
The only thing i became uncomfortable with was the "white out" conditions . That was scary , never experienced it that bad .... wow !!
Once you get "high centered" and stuck ..... your done !!

With the snow we've had lately, I'm re-looking all the threads about pulling others out of ditches, and (God forbid) getting myself pulled out should it become necessary.
As I read the manual / threads and crawl under the front bumper, I am still concerned about being pulled from the front. If I'm looking at it correctly, the two small panels on the front bumper cover that the manual says need to be removed will not allow complete access to the tow points. It appears that if I remove only the small panels, I MIGHT be able to be flat towed. However, if my truck was to be even slightly lower than the tow vehicle (like in a ditch?!), it would cause the strap to tear up the rest of the air dam.
Am I wrong? Have any other Limited owners actually had to be towed and had good / bad experiences that they could pass on?
Will I have to remove the whole air dam like Snooperstyle did? THAT seems like it would be a pain, especially if you're already in a ditch.

I would love a solution for this! Bolt on recovery hooks perhaps? I guess Toyota has a lot of faith that we will not get the 4R stuck

Is it just an optical illusion or are the "wings" coming off of the Toyota emblem in the front grill different? They almost look like they are hollowed out.
As far as towing goes, my ARB makes accessing the recovery points in the front really easy every time I need pulled out. I did learn however this weekend that there are no recovery points in the rear. This is something that I will definitely request be put on my rear bumper!
I got stuck in Idaho last week. Was going a little fast and didnt see a 12" dip in the road, topped out the suspension, and bounced off the side. Dug for about an hour, still needed a tug from a 2500 Chevy Duramax. The passenger side of the t4r frame was buried.

Yes - you need to remove the small plastic pieces to expose the tow tooks. Note that this is only good for straight pulls. If you try to pull at any sort of angle, you will rip the whole lower spoiler off most likely.
You can be proactice and remove the lower spoiler like numerous people have if you are worried about it. I know I wouldn't want to be trying to undo the plastic pieces if I was stuck in a ditch in the snow...

Yes, it was near complete white-out when I left the road. I did have to remove the front plastic guard from the side we were pulling from. I ended cracking the plastic surrounding the plastic rivet that holds the piece in (it was very hard in that temperature). I used my all-tools-in-one leatherman to pull with.

Yep, just ordered one of these, as well as a better tow strap and a second D-shackle. I feel well prepared to be pulled from the rear of the truck - it is the front that worries me.
Maybe this "global warming" will take effect soon and I can stop worrying about snow banks and slick roads.

I have a trail edition with M/S2 Michelin Tires. I got stuck 15 feet off the road last Sunday in the snow. A-Track, diff lock and etc, none worked. The sow was deep and truck was bottomed out. The rear wheels had contact to the ground (after digging it) but were slipping (ice).
I think snow tire (high rubber content) may have helped.
I was pulled out by another truck.

I hate the chrome, so I removed the wings, to eventually install the black Trail wings. But after removing the chrome it looks alright as it is. Waiting to find a trail grill cheap..
