Suspension Questions - new owner

I appreciate all the input. After doing a lot of research, I think I am goong to save up for the OME 880/906 coils and Bilstein 5100 shocks. Mild lift, freshen up, seems to be a good combo.

The 5100s good choice. It will be much stiffer with the ome coils, just so you know

Yes and I think that will be OK. I read a few reviews of guys with the 99 coils and the ass was sagging after putting a load on the truck.
I have a motorcycle hitch carrier for a dirt bike ( 250lbs ), plus gear, and when I put that on I dont want the ass end on the ground.

Plus, it is really hard to find the 99 coils for a decent price.

I have found the shocks for $680 taxes in.

You don't want to sacrifice your everyday comfort because you load the bike up every now and again.

I think the right answer for you is a 99 coil with airbags in the spring.

I'm following this thread closely as I am in the same position as the OP. If using the 99 coils in the rear (I already have the airbags in the stock springs now so would swap them into the 99 coils) what should I use for the front?

I just did the Bilstein 5100's set to 1.75". Really wouldn't recommend it. It really changes the ride. Some good, mostly bad though. Does look nice & they are quality parts. Will be setting mine to 0" with a 1" front spacer soon. If the ride doesn't get better, I'm going back to stock.

On the road, nothing is going to ride as comfortably as stock. I'd get some Tokico struts and 99 coils for the front too.

If it were me and I wanted a good quality suspension for cheap, that rode like stock day to day, and that could carry occasional weight in the back, I'd do 99 tall coils all around, with Tokico factory replacement shocks and struts. If you want a tiny bit of lift for aesthetics I'd add a 1/2" body lift.

It's important to remember that these folks in here are replacing much older, likely blown, suspension components. Kinda and apples to oranges comparison, for you.

That said, which springs did you use on the 5100s?

And I hope you mean a top plate spacer, and not coil. A coil spacer in search of a better ride will only disappoint.

Not certain they will fit but I have a set of 2016 4Runner front strut assemblies complete ready to bolt in. Came out of my 2016 SR5 with 1400 miles on them. $75 plus shipping if you're interested in them.

Yeah, saw I was in the 3rd gen area after I had posted. Please disregard my latest post.
I used factory springs as bilstein recommended.
The 5100 increases ride height with increased preload, per the manual. I know some disagree, but it's on their pamphlet and website. Anyway, preload determines how much sag there will be and these cars aren't designed for several inches of ride height via preload.

Those shocks are too long and won't fit. the coil springs will fit and will give about 1.5" lift

Of course they do- how else would it lift with stock springs? The strut itself isn't any longer...

Hope you can get your issue figured out. I think you're on the right track- lower to stock, add a small top plate spacer.

I went with 5100's and Moog springs a few months ago. Still lovin' the ride. Very smooth and stock-like suspension plus it gave me a 1 - 1.5" ride height increase.

Great, thanks. I know I found the MOOG springs on rockauto that had the same part number as one set of the 99 talls, but the other coils listed did not. I dont want stock height; I want it up a bit.

I also thought I read somewhere on here that the MOOG stuff is no good, which is why I originally was not looking at them.

I'm glad someone with some credibility said this. It wouldn't mean as much coming from me but your posts on this thread are spot on for the OP. In my opinion of course, but comfort, as most describe it is going to be best with the OEM setup. Sporty is another word with another meaning and that's what you'll get with the other options.

Heck, even the Tacoma 5100s will be slightly more sporty than the OEM and still less sporty than the Tundra 5100s. I paired the Tundra 5100s with the Tundra TRD coils and I can say the the ride is not as sure-footed as I would like it. Sure, it corners a lot better, but it's a 4Runner, not a coupe. It gets hoppy on the smaller bumps and especially at high speeds with slight high and low spots i.e on the freeway.

Too many times you see reviews of modded or pieced together suspension system and people say, "I like the ride, or it rides good". That doesn't say much.

I have 906s in the back with OEM shocks and am satisfied with the rear end smoothness. A 4th or 5th gen shock in the back might better though for proper flex etc.

With 99 talls with Tacoma or Tundra 5100s (Tundras being stiffer) in the front you'll get adjustability and with 906s and air bags in the back you won't have to worry about sagging when you decide to tow or carry every now and again.

This is all opinion of course but I was in your position not long ago and after trying out one of the highest regarded setups on this side I can confidently say that unless you have weight in the front or want some gnarly lift in the future try something besides the TRD coils and 5100s. I know this wasn't an option you were discussing here, but in case it was in the back of your mind.

I think you're on the right track. The info that A.Wilson has described here is gold if you're looking for a great ride without any sag in the rear.

Don't forget to take into account how much you paid for this advice.

Matt

Believe my, I appreciate all the advice. Basically it comes down to cost and wants vs needs.

I don't want to get into an airbag setup right now.

I need some new suspension.

I WANT - mild lift ( 2" max ), able to carry stuff in the back without it dragging ass, cost effective.

I don't mind paying a little more for good quality, but I only want to do it once.

Now, I am thinking - 906/5100 shock - rear
99 tall / 5100 shock - front

Sorry to Hijack but it won't let me start a new thread because I just signed up. I'm having an issue helping a buddy install struts and was wondering if anyone ran into the same issue.... Its a 98 4runner 2wd. We got Bilsteins 5100 from toyotec part number F4-BE5-D558-TO with the clip on the top notch. And moog springs 81088 with KYB mounts. Ive assembled struts before but something is weird with the way the top hat sits on the coil. There is an awkward gap at the top on the end of the last coil like it isnt right. I don't think I can post a picture. Any ideas?
