T-SB-0081-12 Headlamp Surface Oxidation

I think I'll take this in this afternoon. It's BS that I was blown off and they tried to give me a "deal" by having me pay $125 (I didn't) for something that's a defect. They're going to get an earful.

Personally I would go in calm explain that they had you pay to replace something that is now a TSB and see what they can do... if you go in azz first you are bound to get shut down.... just a thought

I didn't pay for it to be done. I knew it was a defect so I turned them down. I'm always calm and collected when I talk to people, though, no worries.

SO if my VIN is below the C5077980 I can get my headlights replaced?
and if it's higher it means the defect has been taken care off?

IF they've got the documentation (or you do) of your complaint about this specific item @ a specific mileage, you should be able to get it covered.

ah I mistook "They are going to get an earful" for not so calm lol

Understandable. :)

I called and explained the situation. The warranty administrator is going to call back. There's no record of me talking to them about it before, because it was over the phone and I didn't have the work done. Hopefully they'll take care of it anyway. If not, there's another dealership in town I can try. Fingers crossed! :D

That should be the case. Look at the last 5 of your vin, if below the TSB cut off, you should be good to go as long as you are still under warranty. Of course if yours are NOT showing signs of "hazing", they might not be receptive in doing the swap. I would argue then, yea but if I leave it outside, it WILL happen eventually.... so change it now. Be safe.

Ummm- If you have the right ones they won't haze up. :hiding:

Ha! Funny, I dropped mine off to have the clunk dealt with and mentioned the headlight tsb. The service guy said i was out of warranty but he'll see if he can work something out. Got a call from him an hour ago telling me that the haze cleaned right up with their glass cleaner. We shall see I suppose.

Greetings from a former Soviet Russian block country

Hey guys, hope all is going well in the fight to get non-hazing headlights.

Ya- Since new, I've cleaned mine to look perfect about 58 times so far. Just keeps coming back.

so the part numbers are the same...how can we be sure that we are getting the right ones??

This is my question. That, and whether all of the "hazing specials" have been culled from the parts bin. If not, the question then might be, will the owner be stuck with the cost of a second swap if the original set of hazed lights were replaced with a set of hazing lights for vehicles over the warranty mileage/period? I have 11K/6 mo left before my warranty expires, so better look at getting this done in case it needs to be repeated prior to the warranty expiration.

I would venture to say no. If they replaced a part under warranty, they note the miles and time when replaced. If that same part fails again, let's say within 3 years, 36K from the date in the most recent install, it should be honored. Now this is all conjecture on my part put I do have some experience in that I have had a lot of vehicles over the years and yes, I have had a few warranty replacement parts fail. I have NEVER had a problem with a re-do as long as the failure was within a reasonable time after the original fix. Can't give particulars, but have never had to raise the issue once I showed the dealer it was a warranty replacement in the first place. Toyota has a good rep with their quality and service, I got to believe you will be taken care of if dealing with a quality dealer.....be safe.

Whether the dealer is or is not willing to write up the headlamp cover for warranty replacement will depend on the service write-up guy you get at the dealer! The guy I got at the dealership I have been using for the free 2 year maintenance program only was not "helpful";but full of BS; he claimed that the TSB did not apply to my TE b/c I had a "different" drivetrain! AND that the tech cleaned off the oxidation which was due to tree sap!(I don't park near/under trees!)Rather than cuss him out, I went to another dealer;the first guy had an attitude; told me that just b/c its a TSB does not mean it will be automatically honored;made me make an apptment to come back to have a tech look at it; at the apptment, another guy wrote it up and finally got the replacement parts on order for both headlamp covers and the noisy driver's seat back! This will be replaced under warranty.
