I would keep it bypassed just for peace of mind.

Can someone tell me the conventional spot to mount the cooler? I'm new to the 4runner and automotive work in general. Just not clear on whether it mounts to the front of the A/C condenser or the radiator. Also would it be terribly difficult to replace a radiator after installing a cooler? I don't have the money to do both at the same time right now, along with possibly redoing the lower ball joints...

Bigfishallday has a writeup somewhere around here. I think he mounted his in front of the radiator.

Many here run either mechanical or electronic monitors. I happen to use the latter in the 'torque' variety. These use a blue tooth odb2 adapter you can get at amazon/ebay for about $15-20. The app is usually free yet the $5 upgrade gets you more features.
Yes the temps w/b different from stock. It really depends on whether you do a bypass or just add the extra cooler. Stock keeps the trans temp same as the engine radiator. The cooler only method keeps is cooler to start yet can climb higher than stock if you are not careful when climbing significant inclines or towing or just plain stop/go traffic. Luck. :cowboy:

I see from your sig you are bypassed. I am as well.
Have you considered changing to in-series after seeing the tranny temp higher than radiator? i.e on incline or whatever.
i know there's an endless debate, but you seem to have some empirical data.

Good question Amalik. I guess i did not think of that mostly because I think its the original radiator, well its certainly OEM branded and I picked up the vehicle when it was 9 yrs old so doubt the PO swapped it. I probably should.
But the good part, what i should have mentioned previously, is by simply disabling OD, the temps drop like a rock. By accident during summer temps here (like over 100) with the a/c on and climbing about 300ft with a 4000lb trailer I let the tranny temps get to 237, within 20 seconds of hitting the OD button the temps drop to 203 then to 190 another minute later. So there is a way to control the temps, just not automatically.
I really should just get a new radiator and do the in series as you suggest, where that money tree to shake some off?!

I'm not in series but I am thinking about switching over when we get some warmer weather.

Warms faster and better, and still gets real cool when it needs to
The only trade-off is another milkshake risk. But I have a new radiator and the chances are pretty slim.
