You will see about 6 typically at the higher Rs and 7 under load and at wot on a hill. 5 max is a little low, but if the blower isn't making noise it is fine.I just installed an sc on my 4runner like 2 weeks ago. I have no clue to how many miles it has. I changed the s/c oil, replaced the bypass valve and
the trd throttle body gasket. im also running stock plugs everything seems in line im only getting about 5lbs boost completely stock does that sound
right? I thought stock trd sc is supposed to push about 6/7 but that's a nogo for my runner. it seems to run and sounds great. the old sc oil smelt like
shit and was a reddish black color by the way. 2002 4runner 4wd easy install.
It is the straight cut gears loading up when you start making boost, not the belt lol.Random fluff question, from you guys who know more about these things:
If you're driving gently, up and down through the RPM ranges, you don't hear much from the SC. But when you get it on it and load the engine, you get that lovely whine while the SC is doing work.
Why does that happen? What's making that sound?
It can't be RPM (can it?) since it's driven off the belt and spinning faster or slower regardless of engine load, and the compressor is always engaged (right? Or am I underestimating the complexity of this lovely device?)
I assume it must be because boosting pressure when you goose it, and I'm interested in the difference between normal operation at 2500 RPM and loaded operation at 2500 RPM (ie. when it's whining.) Is it just simple mechanics of the pressure difference? Is the pressure regulator involved?

Can someone please help diagnose the problem? Getting a weird knocking/rattling sounds like in the nose cone. Just reinstalled it after rebuilding (put new bearings in and coupler). Took the belt off and I can spin the pulley without too much force. No sounds when spinning by hand that I could hear. This is when the engine turned on...

Tempted to remove and check the inside out again to see what's going on but would like to hear suggestions first. Disappointing when you think you've done a good job rebuilding but ends up with more problems than before. This was just a peace of mind thing now it's become a head ache!
I have no idea what your noise is?? I've never heard a noise like that. Are you sure it's coming from your S/C?
Hopefully someone who knows will chim in and help you out! Sorry I'm not much help...
Good Luck...

Haha, sounds like a similar situation. Sucks to hear man. I don't like driving it like that so I'm gonna inspect it this weekend.
The supercharger does make noise, it is supposed to. Under boost it will make a wonderful whine sound that most find very pleasant. At idle it will make a rattling like sound. That is from gear slack in the nose drive. The supercharger uses straight cut gears in the nose drive and at idle there is no load on the gears that they tend to rattle back and forth a bit and that presents as a rattling sound. It should go away if the engine is rev-ed up just above idle. This is all very normal. As the supercharger ages the rattle sound at idle may get louder. I replaced my nose drive at 65,000 miles and the rattling sound was greatly reduced.
Interesting...not exactly sure that my rattling sound is considered normal though...
Maybe; but at least you know it isn't supposed to be church-mouse quiet. Since mine has ~160k miles on it I plan to go ahead and rebuild it. Looks like I will have a busy day in a few weeks.
Idk if my post got deleted, but I would advise not doing the rotor pack bearings yourself.Maybe; but at least you know it isn't supposed to be church-mouse quiet. Since mine has ~160k miles on it I plan to go ahead and rebuild it. Looks like I will have a busy day in a few weeks.

Yeah; I ended up just ordering the rear bearings. Figure I will push them out and replace them next Friday night/Saturday. Any other maintenance I should do while I have it off the motor?
I already replaced the nosecone.
not that I can think of. If you have any gouging on the case were the rotors were contacting you can clean that up with some 4000 grit sandpaper. Other than that there isn't much.
