Shit... Yeah, you're right. When I did my boots and tierods a few weeks ago, I had to do them backwards while I waited for my inners to arrive. I did my outters first and then inners and boots the next weekend.

2001 4 Runner Not running well at all- 3 different mechanics
Our 4 Runner (Bertha) has 196,000. We have owned it since 2004. Here is the list of things done in last 2ish years.
8/22/23 flush fuel system
7/23/23 new battery
7/13/23 new air fuel ratio sensor
6/30/23 new spark plugs and wires
7/22/22 New battery & F1 Throttle body
We drove it cross country after this repair and it did GREAT!! Has just been acting up over the last several months.
6/9/21 new tires, rear brake shoes, front upper ball joints, front struts & sway links, timing belt kit with water pump, radiator plastic tank, hoses, thermostat and belts for A/C, alternator, water pump & power steering
It was running okay when the temperature was lower, but drove it home from the fuel system flush and it barely stayed running. Misfires and has very low idle.
Mechanics don't seem to know what to do and we have a pretty car that won't go.
Should we find a new mechanic, sell it to someone who knows 4 runners, or trade it in?
Wanted to keep it going past the 200K mark!
I would appreciate any advice!

Does anyone know which headers would fit with a 1.5" body lift?
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that some will make contact with the steering shaft somewhere when body lifted

Hello, I recently purchased a 1996 SR5 4WD 4Runner. The inside of the drivers and passenger doors have "Special Edition" stitched into them. I am curious if what the deal is with this. I haven't found any information on the internet. I have wood panelling, as in, not fake wood, all over my dash and center console. The car was also purchased originally in California. IDK if any of that information is useful to anyone who would know why my vehicle says "special edition" on the inside.

Hey everyone!
Are there any tricks/tips to get the rear sway bar out while the truck is on the ground? I took out every bolt so it’s ready to pull out but with the exhaust, gas tank, springs, shocks, and differential in the way, I’m struggling to actually remove it from under the truck. Any advice on how to easily do this?

01 4runner rattle only when starting.
Hello I'm trying to find an answer to this rattle sounds when I start my 4runner.
It's only when I start it. It used to be a squeal sound but now sometimes a rattle and sometimes really bad.
Is not all the time though. Kinda from a cold start. Usually the 4runner starts perfect but then it'll rattle

I would assume that it was customized by a previous owner or at a dealership. Post a picture if you can because it sounds pretty sweet to me. I swapped all my black plastic to the limited wood grain stuff.

Do you know the last time all of your belts were replaced? I used to have a bad squeal on cold mornings but replacing my timing belt + all accessory belts got rid of it.

Hi, I'm fairly new to 3rd Gen 4Runners (and cars in general, tbh) so I'm not sure how to describe my question but I'm going to give it my best shot, as such:
I bought a 1998 Limited last month and after finding this forum and seeing what others have gotten up to, I wanted to run new wheels and tires so I got these wheels (Trd Bronze Wheel | Part #PTR2035110F5 | Toyota Auto Parts) along with these lug nuts (Black Lug Nuts | Part #PT0766020002 | Toyota Auto Parts).
As such, I am now running these wheels and lug nuts but because these lug nuts do not appear to be as long (or deep) as the original lug nuts, I am paranoid that something is wrong. I think I am trying to ask if the length/depth of a lug nut matters and if it does, how do I figure out if the new lug nuts that I got are long enough for the 1998's bolts/screws/whatever you screw the lug nuts on to?

This was one of the first things I did when I got my rig because the rear sway bar bushings and links were toast. The bar wasn't connected to the end links at all, just sort of floating around back there.
I can't remember what I had to do to get it out, but I remember it being a real PITA. I know there aren't any videos showing how to pull it. It's like one of those wacky wire games at the carnival when you have to twist it and snake it out just right.
I do know that I replaced the exhaust close to that same time frame. I may have pulled the muffler first to make it easier. But I don't think I ever took rear tires off.
However you do it, make sure you remember the process. Getting it back in is just as much of a headache if you can't remember how it came out.

Sounds like they added the wood grain sticker package option to it. Do you have any pics?

The engagement length of the lug nut on the stud does matter, like you suspected. Ideally you'd want about a diameter's worth of engagement. Best way to check is to remove a lug nut, then just barely thread it onto the stud. Then start turning the lug nut slowly while counting the number of turns, until it is fully seated against the wheel.
Each turn is 1.5 mm, and since the diameter is 12 mm, you'd ideally want to get about 8 turns. You can probably get by with less, but I'd be concerned if you're only getting 3 or 4 turns.
'96 Side Corner Light Screws
I've tried looking everywhere for diagrams and or pictures showing what screws the side corner lights use, but I have yet to find any information with a part number. I recently bought a '96 but the last owner duct taped the side corner lights onto the car because he didn't have the screws for them. So, I am trying to find the part numbers so that I can buy them and put them on.

Hello yes the belts were replaced awhile back and the squeal turned into a horrible rattle after a long trip
Rear differential replacement
So recently I swapped my 15in rims out for 17in rims and found the rear drums and inside of the wheels to have lots of oil on them. It is time to replace the rear after spinning the wheel and hearing clicking in the rear differential. My plan is to go to a pick-n-pull junkyard and swap the whole rear out.
My issue comes in identifying what kind of rear differential my 4runner has, it has no numbers of stamps to confirm its type. I read on the forums that 3rd gen 4runners all used the same V6 rear diff/gear ratio, but there is also the ABS to consider which I don't know if my 4runner has or not (I see the ABS light but I assume that could be manufacturer simplicity). My 4runner is a 1997 3.4L V6,4x4, SR5 package if that helps.
