The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread

Hi all, my steering rack boot has been ripped for some time and it finally has started leaking and I’ve noticed a lot more play in my steering. The boot is just leaking out grease so my seals are likely still ok but I need to investigate the steering play and replace the boot itself. However I am moving back to college this week and have a 16+ hour drive. Wondering if anyone has thoughts on if this is something I should deal with before or if I can deal with it at college?
I would also love an info/videos on how to find which steering component has play and needs to be replaced.
There's basically no grease in the steering boot. If something is coming out, it is from the rack. A ripped boot lets in contaminants, but isn't the end of the world unless you are going to go the whole winter in the salt belt with it open.

For play in the steering - you'll need a helper and maybe some ramps. Key on, engine off. One person wiggles the steering wheel back and forth, the other feels every joint from the hub back up to the steering wheel for play. See what you get... the only one that is hard to feel with that method is inner tie rods.

Hey, everyone I got a 97 Toyota, 4 runner, 2 wheel drive auto and randomly. It will act like it's trying to find a position in between 2 gears or just bogs down completely while driving.I put it in neutral, slapped the throttle. And it's fine , but when it's in gear , it does not want to give any throttle it doesn't happen all the time.It only happens occasionally.Does anyone here have any guess?I bought a cheap t.P.s and it idled high , I just put the old one back on , and it's fine now I know that I haven't air control valve problem Any guesses

Any codes?

Due to the site sustaining permissions issues for threads with 100+ pages, I'm starting this new thread for you guys. I can merge the threads together at some point, if the issue every gets fixed.

Enjoy

:llama:
The issue seem to be resolved with the new software these topics can now be merged together?

Sorry if this has already been asked but I can't find much info on the forums or online about this.

Has anyone ever taken fender flares and the door cladding from the Limited trim and retrofit it onto their base or Sr5?

I love my 4Runner and I've put a lot of work into it so far but I really wish it was a widebody truck.

PFA

Thanks

I recently cut out my old rusted exhaust from the merge collector just before the upstream O2 sensor, welded in a stainless 2-1/4" v-band and rebuilt the exhaust out of 2-1/4" 304L with a magna flow universal cat and a borla pro XS muffler. The fit is fine, the issue i'm having is I welded in two M18 O2 bungs (both upstream and down stream, not flange compatible) and now finding O2 sensors that are compatible with the 3.4 5VZ that do not have the factory mounting flange is difficult. I've tried removing the flange from the threads of the denso 234-4161 and an aftermarket universal walker, but I end up damaging the ceramic portion of the sensor in the process.

Anyone run into this issue before, or know of a threaded O2 sensor that will play nicely with the ECU for the 5VZ? Thank you for any and all help!

O2 sensor specific change with year, emissions package and transmission package (and 2WD/4WD). Mostly for wire length, but also type (AFR vs. O2). You'll need to get specific. I would suggest getting a new Denso or NTK sensor for your application from RockAuto (or other trusted retailer), which will come with a standard threaded O2 sensor and the adapter separate for easy install with your special setup.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. It's a '97 5-spd with the standard narrow band, 4-wire O2's for both upstream and down. I've been having trouble finding a sensor with appropriate wire length and connector, but without the flange pre-assembled and was hoping someone had crossed this bridge before.

Top is your downstream 234-4154. Wire length is 12.91 . Below that is the rear sensor for the '01-'02 5VZs. These are standard O2s and are threaded P/N 234-4261. Wire length is 10.24" Fronts are A/F so they won't work at all. Rear plug looks like a match, but wire is too short, The upstream for yours is 234-4161. Identical but wire length is 15.35 inch. So the 234-4361 is too short there, too. So I suggest you purchase two 234-4209 which are universal threaded O2 which come with a 11.77" pigtail and no plug but otherwise identical to the 234-4261. . Then you splice those on to your existing plugs leaving just the amount of wire you need. I haven't tried it but I'm pretty sure it will work fine. I'm just not sure if the thread is the same as what you stuck on your rig.
