Thinking about ordering a '12 Limited... few questions...

Hi... been lurking around here for the past couple of days.
Great site. Seems like a lot of smarties in here...

My wife and I were considering ordering a '12 Limited sometime early next year... perhaps selling or trading in our '04 Volvo XC90 T6. Before we do, trying to do as much research as I can before hand.

My first question is regarding Entune... I searched around, and couldn't find a definitive answer. I really like what I've been reading about Entune. But I also want the JBL 15-speakers (w/sub). Had a chance to listen to it a few weeks ago, and was really impressed. My question is: If I opt for the JBL+Nav option, does that negate Entune? Or does Entune come with all the various Limited options?

Secondly, is the pull-out rear deck thing no longer being ooffered in '12? Doesn't seem to show up anywhere on the Toyota builder site. If they kiboshed it, thats a bummer. That 3rd row option is pretty meaningless (IMHO) unless you're crazy short and don't need legroom.

Third, does anyone know where I can source a Trail Edition hood? I asked the dealership if I could special order the hood when I order the truck from the factory, and the dude at the dealership said no. Figured, I could probably just get it aftermarket or OEM from somewhere else besides the dealer.

Lastly, I read that retractable running boards were going to be a '12 option, but it doesn't show up anywhere on the builder site either. I had them on my F-150, and while some folks think they're pretty gay (or one other thing to break), I have to admit, they were very useful and just as sturdy as any other running board out there.

I'll let others to speak for the rest of questions, but the hood CAN be purchased.

If you lived closer, I'd sell you my brand new trail hood.

^^ Also if you're going to buy the hood from toyota, you also have buy the scoop and all the components, which is like another $110.

the entune can be had with jbl

the slide out cargo tray is only on the trail

never heard anything about retractable rnning boards
 
I was recently interested in purchasing a 2011 limited but after some research became interested in the 2012 for the entune and the power running boards as well. I actually just got done at the dealership today and have claimed one coming off the boat on Dec 5th :D. but back to the answer to one of your questions because I had a hell of a time trying to get an answer myself... the automatic running boards.. After MUCH hassle and run-around I got an answer on them finally from Toyota Communications Division (The dealerships had no clue how to order them). Their Code is KG and they're about $1,500. Here's the email I got back from them......

Hi Aaron,

The retail price for the automatic running boards is $1,500. The code for automatic running boards is KG. I recommend when you go to your dealer if you are purchasing a 4Runner out of the dealers inventory make sure the window sticker shows that Automatic Running Boards is among the options. Along with the sticker listing Automatic Running Boards it should also have the code KG next to the name Automatic Running Boards. If the dealer does not have a 4Runner in its inventory with Automatic Running Boards you should be able to order the 4Runner from the factory (through your dealer) and make sure it is ordered with the KG option.

I'm also looking at a 2012 Limited.

Question 1: Entune: the "Display Audio with Navigation and Entune" is standard on the Limited, but with the 8-speaker, non-JBL setup only. The optional JBL with Navigation does not have Entune, HD Radio, or the text-to-voice features.

This was a disappointment for me -- I was hoping the premium system with Entune & JBL found on the Camry or at least the Display Audio with Navigation, Entune, and JBL on the Tacoma would make its way to the 4Runner.

In my area, the config that's ordered by the distributor has the optional JBL. Since I can't have both (JBL and Entune), I'm OK with just the former and relying on my own devices to stream Pandora (really, the only thing that interests me in Entune).

Question 2: the pull-out rear deck is still an option on the Limited, as noted in Toyota's Product Information.

Question 3: the only photo I've seen is the one on Toyota's website. The 2012 4Runner manual (on the Toyota owner's site) has the basic nuts and bolts on how it works, but just a line-drawing of what it looks like. Description of how it works from the manual:

The Automatic running boards are linked to the side door opera- tions, extending and retracting when a side door is opened and closed. When a door is opened or closed, the board on the same side extends or retracts...

Press “OFF” on the Automatic running boards switch [on the dash, to the left of the steering wheel by the AC outlet button] to turn off the Automatic running boards system...

During Automatic running boards operation:
If a board contacts an obstacle when extending, it will retract. If an obstacle gets caught between a board and the vehicle when retracting, the board will extend.

In my area, the config that Limiteds are ordered include the JBL with Nav and the Automatic Running Boards. If it doesn't appear in your region's config, it could be that the region chose not to order that option (at least initially).
 
This is definitely an integrated option more than likely from the factory as there is an indicator on the gauge cluster--or at least the factory has the wiring in place and port or dealers install them. It shows on the SR5 and Optitron clusters on the left side. Not mention an integrated switch on the dash. Not that this is 100% accurate but it shows promise.

Also noticed that the Entune display tire pressure information.

The trail hood is $164.89 at RockAuto.com - just view 2010 4Runner Trail to find it.

The plastic piece which fills that hole in the hood may need to be sourced from Toyota.
 
I may need to call Toy directly. I gave the running board code to my dealer and they are not avail. Perhaps it's region specific? That would be a shame.
 
Good luck on the cargo tray I called every dealer within 1000 miles of Denver all said they have never ordered a limited with one and that to order one it would be at least 6 months and 9 different dealers said they absolute would not special order a 4runner at any less than full msrp. So yeah I guess you can get it but it's not going to be easy. After seeing it in my buddies trail I'm not too upset about it though it's kinda gay I can reach into the cargo area to get stuff out and wouldn't let anyone sit on my car even with it. So in the end I'm glad I went with the one they had in stock we got about 5k off from the same dealer that said they don't discount a special order.

Thanks for the leads on the hood too! Quick question... Under the hood itself, are there any differences between the Trail vs. Limited? Not asking about the engine... more of the assembly/construct of the Trail hood vs. Limited. I.e., does the scoop have any "duct work" that helps RAM or channel cold air anywhere specific? Or is it simply just an opening?

No ram air duct..it's just a scoop with a faux intake opening. IIRC the trail doesn't come with a hood liner. As for as under the hood they are the same.

In my region they all come with 3rd seat which I find useless in such a small vehicle. One dealership here (Tennessee) said he could order one but that it would be full MSRP.

I ended up calling a dealership right across my state line in Arkansas. Had the exact rig I wanted in less than a week, had 4 miles on it when I picked it up.

Lucky you. I had wanted a Limited with 3rd row seat and there were none in colors I wanted. Then I wanted one w/ sliding tray and none at all in the region. So I settled on the white w/ the JBL. After listening to the Entune 8 speaker and the JBL 15 speaker, its a night and day difference. The JBL subwoofer makes a huge difference and the sound is amazing. That pretty much settled me on whether to get a 2011 w/ JBL or a 2012 with Entune. Both my wife and I have smartphones, so those additional features of Entune is useless for me. I like having more speakers OEM ;)
 
Does anyone knows how long does it take to order a 2012 limited edition from factory? Went to my local dealer and they told me 6 months.
The sales checked and there are no le with 3rd row seat anywhere in northeast region.
 
I have an 2010 LE with sliding tray. I wanted the 3rd row but there were none available when I got mine. I was in need of a truck quickly so I didn't have time to wait six months for them to make mine. The sliding tray has come in handy a few times but I'd much rather have the 3rd row.

I'd be more than willing to trade parts with someone who is close by to MD.
