Tire Fit: 285/75/17, no body lift & V6... Possible?

Hey guys,

Before anyone gets upset at a fitment question, I have spent a couple weeks trying to find the answers. Can't seem to find a definitive answer and I don't wanna be caught with too much extra work or crazy rubbing. Searched as many forums as I could as well as google.

ALSO this is a fitment question for 285/75/17 NOT 285/70/17!

I have an 05 V6 - Icon 2.5s all around with rear metaltech long travel, CBI bumpers front and rear. No body lift. Already running 285/70/17 Duratracs, minimal rub on body mount.

1) At stock 3.73 gears, will my V6 have a hard time? The 285/70/17s definitely have an effect, but will an extra inch really see big change? When I head out West, I am usually around 14 mpg with my current setup. If my MPGs are going to tank to like 10, that is probably gonna be enough to put me off. The truck is built, but it is my daily and serious wheeling trips only happen a couple times a year. Also makes me think that the extra inch may not be worth the trouble.

2) I am trying to avoid a body lift, I have seen a total chaos video on Youtube where they show how to fit the 75s on a 2nd gen Tacoma however they are demonstrating the clearance for a 285/75/16. I figured the process would be the same. From what I can tell, they only do some pinch weld/body mount work and say that will be enough.

All the builds I have seen so far have some sort of body lift, so no help there. Some 5th gen threads say that you can fit with a body chop and pinch weld cutting. Some FJ forums say its not too difficult.

Basically, I am trying too hard?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Its possible you just have to add rear bump stop extenders.

I am going to go with 295/70/17 Falken MT's next which are 33.5 inch tires.

My brother's FJ with 305/70/17s has the aerodynamics of a brick and it weights about 750 bricks with all the goodies. Does just fine driving through the mountains of Colorado on our trips with 14 or more mpg I think. 18mpg or more down the mountain from Colorado to Kansas. You should be fine with the power unless you want to tow. Though when we both filled up after driving the same distance, I pumped in less gas, and I have the V8 and 35's :)

I have the equivalent of a Icon Stage 6, I believe. 2.5 remote reservoir coilovers, Camburg 1.25 uniball UCA, Metaltech adjustable upper and lower (REAR) controls arms and an adjustable panhard. The bumpstops I believe are 3 inches, its whatever came with the rear long travel kit. I am most worried about the front, but I think a body mount chop and some pinch weld clearing should do it.

Good to know, thank you. All the weight, tires etc really have me wishing I had the V8... Now I just have to see if the chop/weld trimming will be sufficient.

Keeping an eye on this thread as I am contemplating the same size. Currently running 32 with stock UCAs and I rub the mudflap at about 3/4 turn in reverse, and when I bump it going forward. If I upsize again, I'd like to upgrade UCAs too.

I am currently running LT285/75/17 on SCS SR8. Not stock at all
1.25 Body Lift
3 Inch lift kit
1.25 Spidertrax Spacers and I rub on the body mount

I need to do a body mount chop

Also to add, I have a shrockworks bumper which took away 90% of my rubbing issues

Im Planning to go this size as well. I have a radflo 2.5, 3 inch lift with JBA uca's.

Im planning to trim the front bumper accordingly, smack in some pinch weld and most likely do a body mount chop. I will not have a body lift.

Just get 35's. Same amount of work. :thumb:

Yeah I thought the same thing, have not reached out to him...

That is what I was thinking, I think it could be done this way with little rub. My bumper gives me plenty of room so no issue there.

Maybe with a V8, and not my daily. She's pretty heavy as is. I keep thinking about a full URD exhaust system thou... That would make up some power.

Its a daily driver, i need a slight bit of compromise... going with the 285/75/17 ridge grapplers. Maybe next time around.

Ditto on the daily, have you mounted them yet? Any pictures?

SAR_Runner is running 285/75/17 w/out bodylift. He's running billies with OME 886 springs. Spidertrax with aftermarket UCAs. iirc, he mainly just rubs in the rear.

Nope havnt mounted them yet, getting some other supporting items done first. JUst finished getting my brand new OEM lca's installed. I gotta still do some trimming and the BMC and then ill be ordering. within the next month.

You will rub, maybe on top of front wheel well fender.

Mine, 315 70 17 MT 34.57" on stock rims, NO BL, chops and pinch welds done, 1.25 camburgs, 1.25 spacers. Do have 886 springs w/ full armor, slight rake.

Rear will need bump stops.
Front will need playing with low caster #s or will still possible rub on body chop and slight rear wheel well spots. Possible slight rub on UCA.

Blackworks has high caster #s but runs Bad A$$ adjustable UCAs.

EDIT... Stock gears, can run but MPG hit, off road- obstacles, use 4lo.

I am looking at the new Wildpeak AT3W, the redesigned version. It measures (according to falken) 33.9" tall x 11.1" wide. 1 inch taller than my duratracs but .5 inch less wide.

So far I think its doable, I have super bumps in the front (which should help, at least a little, with too much uptravel) and metaltech extended bump stops in the rear.

I would definitely do the body chop and pinch weld modification. My intuition says DO IT!

I have 285/75r17 nitto ridge grapplers with no body lift, total chaos UCAs, demello front bumper, cbi rear bumper. I only rub on the front body mounts when flexing it out and turning a certain direction. here is a pic of the rear stuffed

If you have any questions feel free to ask.
