Nice that there is no cutting involved or shop time and money.

Exhaust bolts can be the most wicked for sure. Penetrating oil galore, and start early. I'd have cardboard or something underneath to protect the driveway or garage floor from what would be permanent staining...

I want that Borla sound. The SCd MINI sounds really good. If the Borla cat-back for the 3rd gen would have maintained the factory side exit, I might have gone that route.

Also, with a cat-back in CA or with a dual cat Runner, there looks to be about 2 1/2 feet of the system that would be discarded (flange behind first cat to a point after 2nd cat's O2 sensor). That's about 1/2 the piping in the cat-back system... Just started to make more sense, to me at least, to address the muffler.

At some point later if / when there are cat issues, I'll get replacements, and the plumbing also. Even a header at that time, and just do whole dang thing...

Just got a call from FedEx making sure I'll be home tomorrow for a delivery for which I need to sign. Must be the seats.

Buy the Borla cat back system, chuck the rear-exit tailpipe that comes with it or sell it, install the walker tail pipe

However that still may not solve the front cat issue... Fed Emissions only require the rear cat, IIRC

Or, for those similarly inclined... The Gibson cat-back. That's SS all the way, with the appropriate side exit, and less expensive. For those who already have the muffler they want, then sub that in place of the Gibson. Nothing wrong with the Gibson muffler though...

Note - on the Borla cat-back system, it's 2.5" pre muffler, and 2.25" post. In case that matters to some. The Gibson is 2.5 pre and post. The Borla is 304, in entirety. The plumbing on the Gibson if 409L. In CA, I'd be plenty content with 409L SS.

That all said, the factory tubing on mine is solid, and mandrel bent. Not seeing the appeal of the Walker tailpipe, unless in a pinch for replacement. Heck some have the exhaust expel under the Runner, I imagine cutting the pipe where it bends downward, so having no visible exit or tip. Not sure if fumes enter the inside, like when not moving, stuck in traffic...

Just follow the wiring back. There should be a pressure sensor attached to it somewhere. You'll need both the pressure sensor and seat belt wires re-installed to keep the light off. I'm sure there's a way to remove the pressure sensor but you'd have to test it's resistance then get the correct resistor wired into it. I've never looked at the 3rd gen system so I'm curious what you find. Post some pics later.

The top of the photo is the leading edge of seat....

The sheathing with blue tape, on the left, contains the wires connected to the seat belt receiver. That goes to a small black connector.

On the auto climate control, I forgot, but are those those three buttons supposed to be lit (OUT/T, MODE and OFF)?

The green NEO4s are working the display wonderfully, but I can't tell or remember exactly the role of the NEO3s, other than it being for buttons in general... I got white on those, but green were installed.

Hopefully addressing my own question... Found this:

"The auto climate control in the 99-01 Toyota 4Runner Limited has (4) replaceable bulbs. (2) light up the LCD display and the other (2) light up the following buttons: Auto, Out/T, Mode, *Off, A/C & the outer rotary controls."

Just confirmed those buttons do indeed light up; and white is not the way to go with those... So, just ordered two NEO3 greens.

Before I got to the unit, I guess I was rushing too much...

I don't see this for sale, at least at Camelback. Damn. Maybe a salvage yard item... Kicking myself over this one.

Rock Auto got me these in two days. Will swap these in tomorrow...

Oh, I was able to get the backup camera lines run back to behind the rear seats for now, ready to be connected to the new head unit.

Had no time open, but got this today:

Put an LED bulb (#74) on the trans shifter...

Pissed I broke that piece.

I saw a mention of a "walker bolt-on" muffler here



So I searched the forum and found this



So I searched amazon for "Walker Quiet flow" and found this Walker 54681 Quiet-Flow Stainless Steel Muffler Assembly and gasket. Some reviews mentioned using two different gaskets, the first one and this one. One guy said to use the Toyota gaskets, but I'll have to search those out.



It was also suggested in several threads and reviews I read the that fastening hardware (bolts, nuts, etc) will most likely need to be replaced, if they come off at all - otherwise they'll need to be cut off. Start soaking them now, I guess. Lol

Also found CARB compliant Cats on Amazon, the front is a bolt on for $320 and the rear a weld in for $100

I'll wait to see what yours comes out looking like and sounding like. Lol

The Walker muffler I recently installed was the cheaper, aluminized walker muffler (Walker 18901). Although, I'm sure the stainless steel version will sound the same

C8H18, still down about that piece, especially last night. Less so today I suppose because I made progress in other areas...

Got the factory muffler insulators out and replaced, of course one-at-a-time. While in the middle of doing so, on a dang cold morning, at least by CA standards (on driveway, no jack stands), my phone rings. I answer it under the truck and it's a local muffler shop (A-1 Muffler in Morgan Hill). I had left a voicemail asking if they were open this week. John there said "yes" and that he has a slot at 11 am. He said that he would have put the new insulators on for me, but I was already almost done...

Of note, the insulators for the muffler are thicker than those for the cat. Same dimensions otherwise, but for those ordering, it's three different types. Here's a photo of the five factory ones removed, in order (for cats, muffler and tailpipe):

The ones behind the muffler were the most difficult, but not all that bad. I'll likely replace those with the proper larger ones later...

I won't be in much of a rush to do so because the Borla muffler is about half as light as the OEM one. Weighed at the shop, a little over 24 pounds. The Borla is tad less than 10 lbs out of the box. With small sections of pipe added, and hangers, call it about 12 lbs.

Installed:

65 bucks cash, so happy with the price too.

In order to make this appointment I had to quickly re-install the OEM driver's seat and drive with all of this crap flopping around:

Somehow that left me with no turn signals, I used hand signals to get me there and back home.

Total Borla sound. Didn't get on the freeway, but did hit a rural road where I got it up to 60 for about a minute. Not loud at all. I had the window down too (to make hand signals). Happy about something!

Turn signals route through the hazard button on the center console

Yes, I see that piece in varying degrees of quality from time to time if you can be patient. Check the LKQ inventory at the yard closest to you.

Muffler looks good! I want to hear it

I just recorded two vids, then deleted them. Worthless.

I will call Camelback. No free shipping because less than $150. Might need to order something else... Painful mistake.

The money saved by not getting a cat-back system goes elsewhere!
