Toyota issues "fix" for axle wrap / driveshaft clunky-thumpy

Took the truck in for service yesterday and asked them to check the "bump from behind" sensation since it has gotten worse over the last couple of months. The technician was able to duplicate the bump and they ordered me a new drive shaft yesterday. It came in this morning and they replaced it in about 4 hours. So far the bump is gone and everything is fine.
 
I recently experienced the "bump from behind" when pulling away from a stop. I have felt it on rare occasion before, but it was more pronounced this last time. For those that have experienced this sensation more frequently, did you note the intensity of your start/stops effecting whether you felt the "bump"?
 
I went to my dealer for 5000 service (what a joke, no oil change) and showed service advisor TSB, he said sure, lets make another appointment and verify that condition. my truck does that every 20 hard brakes- once a week of course when he drives it it will be nice and no bump. should I just bribe him or should I wait until it will be doinf it every stop? I don't feel like befriend that douche, he lied to me about oil change at 5000 miles I hate him.

The fist time I took it in they didn't feel it either, it got progressivly worse, and they were able to feel it the second time around. Also I spotted a line on my invoice labled as "suspension repairs" $0. hummm....maybe they found the rattle as well. I will find out tomorrow as I have to go out to the desert again. We will see.
 
called dealer yesterday explained problem, scheduled appt for today, went in drove with tech no problem. told him about tsb, he said it does not mean that there is a problem. after test drive tech said we going to inspect more. waited for about 45 min, service manager came to me and said he found tsb for this and will order new shaft.
should be in tomorrow, cant wait.:thumb3:
 
5Th Gen. Driveshaft Clunk/Thump, TSB & Dealer

Took my "Lifted" 2011 SR5 (4x4) into the dealer today for the random clunk-thump coming from the rear... Told dealer about the TSB, they put it on the rack, looked at it, and brought me back into the bay to talk with the service manager.

The service manager asked me who did my lift and took me under the truck to show me what was causing the issue. He showed me the front portion of the driveshaft was protruding out of the main body of the driveshaft due to the lift and this is what is causing the random clunk/thump (see pictures).

He also said he gets this issue a lot with people bringing in their lifted Tacomas and FJs, if he were to change out the old driveshaft for a new one Toyota would not except it and the new one would also have the same issue as the old because of the lift. He then proceeded to tell me about a nearby shop that deals with driveshaft issues like this, even gave me their contact info.

Given that I have been driving with my lift for more than a year now and have had no issues other than the random “clunk/thump” concerning the driveshaft, I am apt to think the dealer is full “O”:toilet:

For those of you with lifted T4Rs that have taken them into the dealer for this issue and had the driveshaft replaced per the TSB, did your driveshaft look like mine in the pictures before you had it replaced and what does it look like now after replacement (pics please)?

Any input on this issue would be much appreciated.

@OBW2011. That is such a load of horse puckey.

By his logic, your lift is causing the problem. Many non-lifted forum members have had this problem, including me, and it is positively CURED by this TSB.

Note the TSB says exactly nothing about lifted or non-lifted. Did you show it to him?

I'd find another dealer - this guy either doesn't want to fix your 4R, or he's stoopid. Either way .....

Dealer get paid by Toyota anyway why the hell he don't want to make money?

Good point, the TSB does not say a thing about lifted or unlifted. I should have caught that and brought it to service managers attention. :ybrick: I brought the TSB number in with me and gave it to them for look up in their system, they seemed to be on top of it and helpful but then you know what happened...

Good question, don't know, but considering how I feel about that dealer's service department now... not looking good for repeat service.



I'm in South West Florida area, anyone know of a good dealer around here?

my 4runner is not lifted and hasn't been lifted ever.yet.i wander how your dealer would explain this issue in my truck.
 
I have experienced this issue with my 2011 sr5 and my dealer pushes back saying that there are no open recalls or tsb for my VIN. Any ideas?

Have you guys tried lubing the driveshaft? I had this same problem around 10,000 miles and lubed the driveshaft really well (about 8-10 squeezes of my lube gun) and haven't experienced the issue in about 8000 miles (lubing just a few squeezes from the gun about every 3000-5000 miles now).

It seemed that after the initial lube, it took about 250-300 miles for the problem to go away totally.
