Tracking down a rattle brought me to this

Another vote here for letting the shop handle it. A hundred bucks or so now could save you a thousand later.

Glad you caught it, hope it was in time!

I keep telling myself I caught it, but who really knows. I've been driving this 60 miles a day for a couple weeks now. Plus 100 miles on Saturday, and 100 miles on Sunday. I never notice any issues like what I had yesterday. Temps all stayed in line from what I could tell on my Ultra-Gauge. I didn't feel anything on my way in to work that morning, and nothing until I was about 5 miles away.

Bypassing the brand new radiator will do nothing to prevent this issue from reoccurring. The problem is caused by age and wear. Simply replace the radiator and run a B&M cooler inline and enjoy your extra cooling.
What on earth are you talking about bypassing it with a B&M external cooler will most definitely prevent this from occurring again:gun5:

Here's my 2 cents.

Had you been doing an ATF flush without a milkshake, I'd do the 'at home' flush method.

With this situation and the milkshake, I would pay for a shop to do the flush with a T-Tec or whatever machine. If the $100 includes everything, you really aren't saving much money. The at home method has you buying 16 quarts of ATF, and that much ATF isn't really 'cheap', even for non-synthetic. In my practical experience, if you are draining the pan as well... you will need 4-5 quarts on top of the 16 to refill the pan.

It's going to the shop in a bit. Called a couple places, and one of them really made me feel like giving them a shot. I'm looking at $650 to get it towed in, all parts (radiator, trans filter, seal), flushing (trans, coolant), and labor.

Hopefully I'll get lucky, or at least buy a little more time. I honestly think I might have caught this in time. Keeping my fingers crossed about it!

Is this like that miracle baby that you make even tho you weren't anywhere near her? I'm pretty sure that not having ATF pump through your radiator will in fact disallow the possibility of the two fluids mixing. I mean I guess both could burst at the same time and mix together... but that would be out of the oven.

I understand that as well and fully agree with you. It just seems as though many on the forum believe that this issue to be caused by a design flaw rather than age.

Oh... yea... I forgot that every engineer went through the class of functionality/time. Wherein you decide that if something fails sooner than projected its a problem, but if not, it's a wear part. The thing that was not taught in that class is the "catastrophic failure clause", wherein if a part has a simple, undetectable failure point, and that failure causes catastrophic failure to critical parts of the vehicle, it is in fact a POOR DESIGN.

$650 compared to ??? to get a trans out of a low-ish mileage wrecked t4r, or a rebuilt trans?

Compared to $1400 for now. The cheapest junk yard transmission in my area is $750, and nothing available on CL either. The $650 is for towing, new radiator, transmission flush, new transmission filter, new transmission pan seal, coolant flush, new fluids, and labor. I figured that I already needed to have it towed to make sure it was properly flushed. Towing round trip, transmission flush, new filter, and labor was already close to $400. Might as well pay the extra $250 and have them take care of everything. I should be able to tell right away if the transmission is screwed when I get it back. Everything that is getting done are all things that need to be taken care in order to find out if the transmission is gone.

I think you are getting a good deal at $650. Plus you are skipping the head ache of doing it yourself. You could easily spend that much in parts an fluids and all that stuff just to spend 15 hours and get nowhere. At least this way it's not your time. Plus they have tools and abilities you could never match at home.

Oh I wasn't saying it wasn't a good deal, just wondering how much more you'd need to spend to get a tranny that you know is good, rather than spending $650 and hoping you caught it in time.

Will the trans shop test it out and make sure it's worth saving before digging too deep into the labor?

Worse case I'm out $300 for the transmission flush and filter. They're going to pull the pan off and take a look before they do anything. Supposed to call me when they have some details. Still need the rest of the work regardless. I'd be with just getting another 10k from it, and then replace it. I really just need it to hold out until I leave at the end of the year to hike the AT.

I'm glad you decided to take it to a shop. When I replied that you could try the 'at home flush' method, your post before you edited stated you would be handling it at home.

I don't think the at home flush method would be as thorough as a flush machine at a shop, even if you ran say 6 gallons (24 quarts) through it.

I'm glad I took it somewhere as well. Once I started thinking about, and how much time I don't have. It just made better sense to take it somewhere. Got a call from the shop around 4:30 today with the news. Car will be ready to roll tomorrow since the radiator didn't show up this afternoon. They told me from what it looked like there wasn't a lot of coolant mixed in the transmission. That it actually looked like there was more ATF in the radiator then anything. They seem pretty confident that the transmission will be fine.

So hopefully I did catch this just in time.
