Traction Control v8

I read about another owner not being able to have as much fun in the snow because of traction control on his 4runner.

I came from 08 Rav4 and it purely sucked in the snow with traction control. it would go on flat snow covered roads but starting out on a steep incline it couldn't make it. I would slide backwards down my driveway because it cut the power. I could do the "tap dance thing on the break pedal to trip the the traction and only then was it somewhat fun!

I thought that when you locked the center diff it cut the traction control but was reading more and found it to the the stability control.

Mine is an 04 v8 4wd. How will this thing be in the snow with and without the center diff engaged.

I know these are not ravs and I should be able to make it up my driveway right?

I just remember when we had a 2 foot snow storm my parents 98 limited runner was eating it up and my buddies tahoe was struggling.

I just hope the traction control on these isn't a burden like on some vehicles. You can turn the traction control off on the newer ones right? Is there any way to trip the traction control like on the Rav4?

The VSC is definitely limiting when in a situation where spinning the wheels is necessary. Locking the center diff solves most issues, however.

I can contest that the Trac Control is not very good in snow. Last winter was my first with my 04 V8 and the 4R really liked to send me in a straight line right where I didn't want to go, best part is when u try to correct and the Trac control gives up and locks up the gas and limits breaking and sits there beeping at you. Mind you part of this was due to bad tires, if your decent with car control lock the diff and it will handle much better. This year I'm throwing a lift and really good tires on mine which will hopefully help and I can give control back to the electronics with out it trying to throw me in to the bushes. On a side note the down hill assist really works well on ice.

I believe engaging the center diff will disable the traction control - a "VSC" will light up. The later models, 2005+, have a button to turn off the traction control.

Locked center diff disables VSC (the thing that beeps), Traction control remains active. Some of these terms have not been used consistently in Toyota literature and cause endless confusion, so to restate the first sentence in descriptive terms: Locked center diff prevents engine from being dethrottled but leaves active the feature that pulses the brakes to prevent excessive wheel spin. Brake pulsing to control wheel spin (referred to as atrac or traction control) tends to diminish with engine rpms. You can lock diff and rev the engine to have fun if you wish.

2008 and later had a separate VSC off switch.

It is easy and very cheap mod to gain control over VSC.
I have done this mod and it works great!

The only other way to disable VSC is to lock cent. dif., but it is not always good… like in your example of “playing” in the snow.
