transmission temp check mode

This has been one of the most frustrating processes ever with this truck..... Am I looking for a D light? am I looking for a AT light....I don't even get with the d light even means? Does it mean regardless if the trucks in park it's going to show a d?

I wish someone could help me with this I'm sitting in my truck about to lose my mind! Lol

1.) Jump pins 4 and 13 on the OBD II plug
2.) Start your truck, and watch the dash lights flash
3.) Shift to Neutral for 2 seconds
4.) For 6 seconds (approx 6-8 shifts) go back and forth Drive, to Neutral with a very short pause
5.) During #4, watch your gear indicator on the dash (D, N, D, N, D, N) when you shift back into N after the 6 seconds are up the light will switch to D for 2 seconds and go back off
6.) If the D light doesn't come on while in Neutral after 6 seconds of shifting shut off the truck and start back at #2, it can take a couple tries
7.) Put the truck back in Park, the indicator will be blank
8.) Pull the wire from the OBDII plug, let truck warm up for about 15m
9.) When hot enough, the D light will come back on solid, indicating you are at the proper temp to check the fluid level (yes even in Park)
10.) If the D light is flashing, your truck is too hot, let it sit for a while and come back later

I've done 2 fluid changes on a 2WD 2014 4R SR5. Yes there is no A/T Temp light like there may have been on earlier versions and as there is on my 2015 Tacoma 1GR-FE A750E(2WD) transmission.

Go thru the shifting back and forth from N to D etc as mentioned in this thread to get into Temp Check Mode. Once there the bluish background in the gear selector indicator area turns more of a grayish color and the gear indicator field goes blank. In my case this indicates I'm in temp check mode. Put transmission into P and pull jumper wire. Important to pull the jumper wire once you are in temp check mode.

Once you are at the correct temp to pull the overfill plug, the D light will come on even though gear selector is in P. Now I'm ready to crawl underneath to pull overfill plug.

Wire gauge

Hey guys. Planning on doing this soon. A bit of trans fluid leaked out when doing timing belt. And I'm just curious, what's a suitable gauge wire to use in jumping pins?

Don't bother with wire - has a tendency to bend and is difficult to seat in the DLC3 ports. Use a small paper clip. The smaller - the better.

Put in what came out?

Can't we just put in the exact same amount that came out and avoid all this temp check crap?

Also, if my truck has a level kit up front wouldn't that effect the accurate reading on the temp check since it's not factory leveled? I would think anyone with a lift or level kit would get a false reading.

The paperclip is probably good advice. I wasnt able to get it to work and the wire may have been my issue. I ended up just using the reading on my scan gauge.

Fluid Change

Finally changed out transmission fluid. This may sound OCD but since I have a level kit up front I put 3/4 inch plywood under rear wheels to keep things closer to factory rake. Also, I used a small funnel and half inch clear tubing to fill fluid instead of a pump. I decided to put in a little more than came out and the temp check using the paperclip worked perfect with little fluid draining out.

Torque app with bluetooth OBD reader does not show tranny temp.

When doing the jumper pin method I get the shift indicator to change to D when in park. I pulled the jumper and the tranny pan feels quite warm. Does the D start to blink when it's over temp or the A/T Oil light? The overflow is still pouring out and I put back about what came out. 4 quarts or so drained with only front jacked up. Refill and check procedure the tranny pan is level with rear jacked up as well. Am I doing the check procedure wrong?

ETA: The D indicator started blinking. Fluid still coming out of overflow at a good rate.

Thanks for the reply. The pan feels plenty warm and fluid is as well but not burning me. The D indicator did start to blink so I think the temp is ok I just have qualms about letting all that fluid drain out. This is the second time I have done this and the first I replaced the amount that came out so I don't see where all this extra fluid is coming from.

Flashing D is an over-temp indicator. The fluid volume expansion per degree is substantial; I'd adjust again at the right temp.

Hmmmm. I understand the procedures but don’t understand why? If your rig is sitting in the driveway/garage overnight and you pull the transmission drain plug and get 3 quarts of cold fluid out can’t you just put 3 quarts of cold fluid back in? If you put back in Exactly the same amount why even mess with fluid temperatures?

i have been trying to get the transmission to go into temp check mode by jumping pins 4 and 13 in the OBD plug under the dash. Has anyone been able to do this on the 5th gen 4runners, I know you could on the tacomas and figured this would be the same.

I use the scan gauge II .. no problem .. also other engine info .

I let it cool down some and then opened the overflow plug up. Only about 5 or 6 ounces came out so I stopped worrying about it. Are the drain plug threads easy to strip? I did not get my torque wrench to click with a new crush washer even after it seated. Steel would be hard to strip.
