TRD Pro Clunk

Sorry for the really late reply.......I Actually never got a straight answer about the bulletin. But It looks like you guys got it. I just picked my truck up yesterday and the clunk is gone!!!!!!!!! It took it seemed forever to get the replacements in and then I went out of town and then the worst flooding in state history hit putting dam near every rural town underwater. Again, sorry for the late reply!

Good to see another 4runner with the new 160's. What do you think of the ride now. I've had mine on since Saturday and I'm more convinced that the ride is a bit better with these new shocks. It doesn't seem to be as jittery or sharp hitting when I get into some bumps. It just seems to handle these better and it takes the edge off. Once again this could all be in my head....
What's your opinion?

Do you guys think Toyota will replace my suspension if they're not able to replicate the clunk? Just checked mine and I got the old set up. I heard the clunk a couple times, but haven't been able to replicate it.

Another issue I noticed was a clicking sound around my driver side dashboard. Only happens when I first start the engine and go forward. After that, it doesn't do it until I shut off the engine, restart it and drive forward again. Kind of sounds like when the traction control going on. Have anyone else notice this sound? Could be tough with you being in Hawaii and all. Most of us clunk guys live in areas that have some sort of winter because that's when we hear/feel it. That said, it really can depend on your relationship with your dealer. In my opinion, if they value you as a customer and maybe a future customer they should bend over backwards to help you and if there are new suspension components for our newish vehicle they should help. Maybe talk with your sales guy first. Actually point them to this thread and let them know that all new pro's come with this shock no matter where you live. They will get their money back from Toyota. Good luck

Doesn't the dealer make money doing the repair update?

If so I'd ask them to do it. Another thing to consider- are the new shock the standard now, the only ones there going to be installing? If so I'd insists on the replacement.

Toyota would pay for the work done and the customer is out nothing(but time)I'm sure Toyota pays at some lower rate but who knows. Yes, As far as I know and with 2016 pro owners(of late) verifying the newly imported pro's are all coming with the new updated(not sure how) shocks.

Unless it is previously verified by a tech that there is an an issue no. Mine has been doing it when cold since new. I didn't take it in as I didn't want to waste my time since they were not doing anything about it. Said wait til it is cold then bring it in. Mine is a 16 bought in 9/15. Has 50 shocks. Guess I need to call corporate.

Just heard back from the dealer. They said they can't honor the TSB because the tech can't replicate the noise.

The clicking sound around my dash is normal they said. It's an actuator. Idk. Anybody else hear that sound with theirs?

They may be talking about the 4x4 control box. On the passenger side the clicking noise is for things like actuating the 4 wheel drive. That doesn't go on all the time though, only while the 4x4 system tries to actuate or de-actuate.

Service tech is probably trying to dismiss it as normal since they don't always hear that one noise that bothers the vehicle owner. Just like a computer never does the troublesome issue when the IT tech is there to look into it.

I get a little ticking that I can't pinpoint myself since it is on the passenger side and not predictably repeatable and it has to be quiet inside the car while moving. I haven't mentioned it as it seems to depend on things like relative humidity etc.

Bummer on the TSB question too. I brought mine in for the complaint back in the 5K visit but it was too warm to repeat. They told me about bringing it in when cold too but I also opted to not waste my time since nothing was going to be done. I did ask about it again on the 15K visit so I am hoping that the documented mention will get the TSB validated. I will certainly post up here when I bring it in for the 25K and ask them about the TSB.

Thanks for the input. I was able to replicate that clicking so that the service advisor did hear it. Anybody know what actuator is around the driver side dashboard?

Figured I would update this with my own experience.

Bought a 15 TRD Pro around this same time last year. Did not say a word about the issue to my dealer until this fix was actually available. I emailed my sales guy the pic 4RunnerPro posted (thanks!) as well as just forwarded him this whole thread.

Did not have a single issue, they ordered the new Bilsteins, came in, scheduled repair, done in 4 hours, picked up and all set.

I just looked underneath and it almost looks like they used the same springs? Not sure if that is normal but I will check it out more in-depth tonight.

Only drove it a few miles so far, seems the same. Can't hear the clunk now, its too hot.

Springs

The springs will be your old ones. Only the shock itself will be replaced. You have a good dealer like I do. Wish everyone did...

I've been meaning to post an update since I had my struts swapped out.

We've had some cooler mornings here in the Bay Area and my clunking is totally gone, which is obviously great.

Additionally, the front end is so much tighter than it was before, and not just in a, "these are new parts so they'll break-in" sort of way either. It is amazing how much play/slop there was in the original OEM parts as compared to the revised parts. It is night and day different and feels like a completely different vehicle!

Here's hoping that everyone gets theirs replaced!

Same deal for me. Just went in for my 25K service. The clunk was noted in the 5K but due to the temperature being around 60 that day they could not experience it. No love from my dealer, they said they saw the TSB but I need to come back when it's cold to validate the TSB repair.

Now I am worried that they will balk about the Toytec TRD lift when I try again during cold weather.

Having my shocks swapped out right now. I had never reported the clunk to the dealer cause they didn't have a fix. I was in last week getting a part for my FJ and asked about the TSB, the service person said they would need to replicate the noise. I said you can't it needs to be cold out. So they told me I would need to come back in the cold weather. I asked her to let me talk to the service manager, I have been going to this dealership for years, and know the manager by sight. He told me he would order the shocks and call me when they came in. It is good to have a dealership that I trust and treats people well. Thank you Woburn Toyota.

Update: after a journey that began Feb 2015 with a call to Toyota CS and multiple case managers, The struts are now replaced even with my 6" lift. I do believe that the many folks on this forum sharing experiences and case #'s accelerated a fix. Thanks to all that followed up.

The Irony is that I am installing Kings next week to get full length struts and shocks in the rear. Will probably post the set on the for sale thread for a clunk free set.

My new shocks have been ordered - Thank you everyone!!

So, like most of you I have been following (and posting) here for a long time. Had a 4 wheel alignment performed yesterday and, armed with the service bulletin number listed here recently, I was able to get my dealership (DHC Toyota of Milford, MA - formerly Ira Toyota) to order the new shocks (they were on the phone with someone about this for a long time). Super psyched ... should come in this week. Even though it is in the 90's here in Massachusetts, they are not making making me wait until it is cold (since I went on record last year with the Toyota case number I also got here). YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME and I thank you for the work you have done for ALL of us.:banana:

Hmmm! I wonder what the dealer will say/do if the truck has lift on it. I have the clunk but have the Toytec TRD Lift installed. Hope they don't make me take off the lift before taking it in for service.

Heading out on a two week trip, so will find out when I get back.

Good to hear they found the cause, though.

Well, I finally got to the dealer to check on this, and they did in fact reproduce the clunk and replace them with the lift on. The service itself was a bit questionable, but they did do the job, and I now have a much improved ride. The front end now makes no noise and it's silky smooth.
