For today's "Reading is Essential" class you both do realize that was just Copart's estimation of the price when new? If you scroll your eyes to the way far right, the bids are up to 10K.

So mister accountant how do you realize an estimated retail value near msrp on a wrecked vehicle?
What is the point a having an estimated value when new when it will never be new again. I would assume one would use an estimators value when the vehicle has been repaired.

When you and stifler get done liking each other's posts, perhaps one of you should contact Copart and let them know you take real exception to the estimated retail value, and the bidders ought to be forewarned that they shouldn't expect to realize the full $45K price once they replace the bumper cover and windshield.

No just reminds me that I am glad that I no longer live back east where for no reason someone else just has to be a dick, that's all. Edit: hah what does that matter people do it here too. Starting off with an insult is that the norm for folks from Vermont or just you?
Why would I bother? I know here in smogville that a salvage title is equivalent to a total, so yeah I based my comments off that. Frankly don't care I was simply surprised to see that price on what I based as a costly repair from the information provided.

Maybe in some parts of the country. In Southern California, departments have specialized units that deal with auto theft.
They put the specialized team on TV (bait car, etc) and make you think you're screwed. The truth is you have a very small chance of getting caught.
CSI has done the current generations a serious disservice. If fingerprint/dna collection/matching was all that easy, people would get caught all the time.
Reality is nothing like TV.
There are bigger crimes in LA that are much more emergent than auto theft, it's going to take a long time for a lab tech to come get prints.
My local department's current wait time for a tech on a burglary (which includes auto theft) is 7-10 days. Most people contaminate the scene, clean it, or just give up long before then. Complain to the sergeant, the watch commander, the captain, the division chief, it still won't matter (but give yourself a pat on the back if you get past the watch commander). And they can't help you anyway because they don't know how to pull prints. Meanwhile, the lab techs have a bunch of bloody messes to wade through. And they don't catch a lot of the guys responsible for those either.
I feel for the OP. Having a car stolen brings a distinct feeling of violation. It's no use speculating what the thieves had intended, but I've seen all sorts. I talked to guys who stole cars to commit crimes, transport drugs, or even just "for fun." Just recently there was a series of liquor store/grocery store thefts where some 4-5 17-19 year old kids would run into the store, grab liquor, and run out into a new Explorer and take off. Ran the plates, and it came back as a car stolen from a rental company two days prior. Never found the kids, but the car was found in a store parking lot a couple days later, damaged, and reeked of alcohol.

Actually, that was the insurance company's valuation at the time of pre-loss condition. Basically, before the car was stolen and damaged.
It was worth more than msrp and sticker because of the prices of the few comparable vehicles that were for sale, all priced above msrp.
On another note, it appears to have sold on the auction site.

don't know if posted somewhere, but there is a device that captures your key fob data.. it uses two devices just like this in this video and is there is one for Toyotas,, they were quite expensive, but are getting cheaper from Eastern Europe and China..
Basically, one device captures your key fob data, from your house, at work, the gym etc,, it can be re-transmitted by the second piece at the vehicle door and start the car once inside.. they can be separate or together..
Perhaps removing the FOB battery or placing it in a radio frequency blocking container when at home can protect you somewhat..

British Columbia and Alberta are two friendly and extremely beautiful provinces. Big Cities, in many countries, do not reflect the people as a whole. Our former neighbor, when we lived near D.C., was from Edmonton and worked for the Canadian embassy. Other than the fact that he admitted to being a spy just before returning to Alberta, he was a great guy.

Pretty crazy stuff. I was reading on the Acura MDX forums that a bunch of owners in Toronto were having their brand new vehicles stolen from their driveways in a matter of seconds. Most likely the result of this sort of device. Owners were going as far as wrapping their keys in tinfoil or putting their keys in metal boxes at night due to the suspect range of the copy devices (i.e. they could copy your key info from outside of your home). One guy even had his new MDX stolen, then got another, then had that one stolen.
