TSB for DRL Disable

Toyota has issued a TSB that describes how to disable the Daytime Running Lights (DRL's).

It's # EL014-06, dated December 12, 2006. It can be done to any 2003+ 4Runner with the factory DRL option. All the dealer needs to do is get out their scan tool and turn it off. No parts are required. The TSB steps through the menu options on the scan tool.

The TSB says that the service (labor) is NOT performed under warranty; be prepared for your dealer to charge you for doing it.

For those of you that have been getting grief from your dealer about doing this, you now have a TSB to point them to.

The dealer will definitely charge a hefty price for this. I wonder how many people realize that the DRL's possibly save them money on their car insurance.

I thought the DRL enable/disable was controlled by the different relay that was plugged in.
One relay for enable and a different relay for disable.

Swapping a relay is another way to disable the DRL's... a search will turn up a how-to thread on that. But if you've got them factory-installed, the computer can just set them to be on or off.

Heading to a drive in movie tonight - and it is 95 degrees and humid so it would be nice to run the car even occasionally. I bet everyone there would love for my DRLs to be disabled...

Kinda stupid that I would have to go to a dealer to turn the lights off though.

I haven't tried this on the 4 but on alot of vehicles if you set the parking brake the turn the ignition on or start the car, the drl won't come on until you release the parking brake.

So if it works just do that if your at the drive in

This site is GREAT! Thanks Speed Junkie. In fact, if you set your parking break before you turn the truck on, the DRL's do not turn on until the parking break is released!!! Wish I knew that 12 hours ago.

are you kidding me, the dealers would charge for this? it looks like it takes less then 2 mins to complete. i hate DRL's for many reasons. the insurance savings how would they even know if we disabled them? the dealership i bought my car is to far away so i havent had a chance to go back and see if they will disable them for me.

You bet they'll charge for it. Time is money, and they can't do anything in less than 1/2 an hour.

It's best to ask the dealer to make this change while you're there for something else. If you're already paying them to do something to your car, they'll probably make this change for free. You're right, it really does take just a couple of minutes.

+1 Yeah really....I won't buy a vehicle without DRL's because my wife and kids drive them. Everything I own including my motorcycle has them.

I agree. I think DRL's are a cheap and easy way to increase visibility and safety. Foggy day, silver/white car with some a-hole who never puts his lights on.

I wish mine had them.

Another easy way around that is to engage your parking brake. The DLR's don't turn on when the P brake is on.
