Tyler James Inc's Ultimate '01 SR5

I've done 2 of the electric boosters now. One on a 3rd generation, and one on a 4th. Both equally as expensive around $1400-1600 shop cost for the part alone, plus time obviously.

If you're doing the manual trans swap, might as well manuallize the brakes as well. Although I'm not sure about the traction control operation at the point. Worst case you could remove the VSC computer entirely and yank the fuses/bulbs so the system being missing doesn't bother your eyes. I'm rather sure it doesn't affect the engine's computer operation.

I think that was your question right?

Man, huge shout-out to [MENTION=77045]99 sr5 highlander[/MENTION]!
I asked him if he could get me a '01/02 turn stalk with fog switch, and he emailed me two days later saying he got a stalk and a relay, and it's ready to ship! Awesome service from Chris [emoji1360]

I said '01/02, because I believe they are different than the <'01. I bought a stalk from [MENTION=93316]I'mStock[/MENTION] (also great guy; his real name says it all [emoji848]), and it was too large to slide into my opening. He had bought it from another member, but never got a chance to try it in his own rig. No fault of his at all. Here is the one that didn't work next to my stock '01 stalk-

But I'm thinking it wasn't from a 4Runner at all, because if any 3rd gen would have the "auto" function, it would be an '01/02- I would think.

The Tacoma rad I used had the cap in a different location than the 4Runner, and actually holds the hood up. I need to re-drill the core support to lower the rad a little bit-

There's NO way you accidentally wrote this without thinking it was dirtier than an oil well.

I'm sure there's another forum this sort of comment would fly, but there's youngin's floatin about!

Again, kidding. Great work man. I'm excited to see the solution to any bugs that may spring up.

Congrats! (And good for the other guy's size as well!)

Anyone reading this know of anyone who has swapped out the stupid '01/02 electric brake booster for the '96-'00 diaphragm style? I'm having a hard time re-mounting the VSC/TRAC/ABS computer(it was mounted right where the clutch pedal is), but I have to keep it for the booster and speedo to work. I have the Tacoma engine harness, so I have the VSS wiring. I'd have to get a VSS, do a little wiring, and I could have the speedo without needing the computer. Just trying to figure out the best option.
I'm not sure if I like the electric-boosted brakes as well either...

I nominate you to work this out, I've recently been thinking about this because 1) Its crazy expensive to replace the stupid booster 2) I feel like this is the main culprit in "squishy" pedal after the TBU 3) I actually feel safer with a manual system

This would also make the eventual SAS of the 4runner easier...b/c we all want a solid axle eventually

I'd been thinking about this... I think he was pulling them out of ES3XX's and selling them on here. I guess some worked and some didn't?

Glad you got it sorted, let me know if you need anything else! :clap2:

The Sienna, Camry and Solara (at least) had at stalk that matches the 2000 and earlier trucks. I used a Sienna stalk on mine because it was the cheapest on eBay. Some of them had auto headlights. So, for those guys with the earlier trucks, you can get one from other vehicles, just avoid the ones with an 'auto' setting.

Haha well, I'm pretty sure I'll eventually do it. Gotta source a nice clean booster and master. I'm sure [MENTION=77045]99 sr5 highlander[/MENTION] will be my dude for the job. I've always wanted to straight axle my rig- and my wife even more so- but I'm actually not sure if that would be best. Between ground clearance, ride, and handling- I think LT IFS would be ideal for me. Unless a person is building their rig solely for rock crawling, I am of the opinion IFS is the better route.
Well..... how did it drive?!!?
So good man! Been driving the heck outta it. I need the [MENTION=28464]eimkeith[/MENTION] panhard brackets BAD. I forgot how much better it handles with them. I'm used to the '97 with the brackets, and the '01 is super tippy in comparison. I can't rally as hard as I'm used to [emoji23][emoji30] Gonna try to make it out to your place this weekend if you'll be around [emoji6]
Welcome to the 3rd pedal club
Thank you! Where's the member list? [emoji12]
And good for the other guy's size as well!
Gotta give props where props is due! [emoji23] Yeah; there is definitely no way I meant that in anyway short of how it sounded.
Thanks man, it feels great to be driving a 3rd gen again [emoji1598]
Fun stuff, always nice to come across another PNW build, and by a VW fan too :)
Nice! I'm much more love/hate with VWs than Toyota's, but they have a place in my heart.
Glad you got it sorted, let me know if you need anything else! :clap2:
Thanks so much Tyler. I really appreciate all your help with part numbers and such [emoji1360]

Great info, Charlie! Thanks for that. Now I can confidently sell it to another member in need of one!

I also bought one off a 99 or something and found out it didn't fit after I tore into the steering column
Oh lame! I guess I should have done more research before just assuming all years were interchangeable. My bad on that. I swear OEM units were only $65 or so *♂️
That's probably the cleanest 5 speed swap I've ever seen! Looks amazing!
Hey thanks man- that's what I shoot for!
Should we start a pool betting how long it will take for the pedal to start squeaking?
Shit. And my night was going so well. Thanks for reminding me.
HEY EVERYONE! MY CLUTCH PEDAL IS INTERMITTENTLY SQUEAKY, AND ITS ANNOYING AF!!! [emoji30]
Not sure if it's worth keeping the spring and seeing how long a replacement bushing will last or not. I've seen the linear springs, as well as read about the 4cyl pedals. What's your input?

I popped my spring out altogether. Made the pedal firmer, in a good way, IMO.

I don't have much input to this forum except sarcastic comments here and there and posting cat gifs but you've probably already seen this thread:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...edal-sticks-floor-morning-three-days-row.html

You seem to be the kind of guy that's good at figuring stuff out so maybe you'll come up with a solution for everyone! In the meantime I'm trying to ignore it, which was pretty difficult in stop and go traffic today but my roof rack build and anti-rust treatment are higher priorities this summer.

Previous poster seems to have a solution.

Sounds scary- is it under much tension? I'm not against a firmer pedal. I thought it used the spring as an assist, but also as a return. You have no spring, and the pressure from the pressure plate is plenty to return your pedal, right? Seems obvious, but I've heard of guys adding a linear return spring.

I'm not opposed to adding a linear spring as well, to be honest. - Just haven't gotten around to it. It would help with the last 10mm of return.

Getting rid of the assist, though - I wouldn't go back. It's nowhere near as firm as a sports car clutch without it, so why have an assist Granny?
