Details (for those who may not have seen/heard):
Raid launched with 40 members of "SEAL Team 6" in 4 helicopters (Blackhawks and Chinooks), with 24 of those SEALs fast lining into a million-dollar compound in Pakistan. Mission parameter was to kill - not capture - Usama Bin Laden. He was shot in the head by a SEAL while cowering behind a woman he used as a human shield (TRUE STORY!), and we killed his 24-year-old son in the process.
Lost one helicopter to mechanical failure (destroyed by our troops before evac), but no US casualties. Raid took about 40 minutes, with no outside resistance.
His body was buried at sea within 24 hours of death to keep with Islamic customs.
I would LOVE to see video (and you know there's video from USSOCOM and the Navy) of this stuff.
Now, here's Sp8ball's take on this:
1) If 24 members SEAL Team 6 are dropping into your compound as part of a raid, with 4 helicopters providing top cover and reinforcements, you're about to have a bad day. I don't care how many guards you have or how big your security detail is - you're not going to enjoy the next few minutes.
2) It's pretty brilliant that the US is releasing some of the details about WHERE he was hiding for two reasons. One, it makes the Pakistani's look like asses. Two...what do you think all of his al-Qaeda buddies are thinking when they hear he was in a million-dollar, extravagant mansion the last five years? "Hey...wait a minute! We've been living in caves and eating dirt while running for our lives for the past 9-and-a-half years thinking he was hiding in rocks like the rest of us...and he's been living in a mansion?"
3) Taking him out was smart. No trial. No drawn out debate about his "rights" or "what statutes do we use?" or any such B.S. No debate about whether or not we can use the death penalty, or some drawn out wait until he hits the chair. Just the law of the trigger.
4) Buried at sea - brilliant. No burial site for lunatics to treat as a shrine. No lavish funeral. Just dumping his body over the side of a ship so he can be in death what he was in life - lower than whale $h*t. (note: If I'm the Admiral leading that battle group out to sea, and the SEAL who pulled the trigger is on the ship, I'm letting him kick the corpse over the side of the ship)

Just a note for you. This particular operation was planned and put in motion under the Bush admin. All the current admin did was fall in under a current plan that was already in the process of being executed. Not arguing one side or the other just informing someone who obviously has a bias as to the facts!
As someone who had first hand experience and spent months in and around NYC on 9/11/2001, I dont give a sh!t what admin was responsible for this. The fact of the matter is that piece of sh!t is dead and now floating at the bottom of the sea where IT (i wont refer to IT as a he or human) belongs. A GREAT day for the world indeed!

Unfortunately I haven't seen a politician who missed an opptunity to take a credit for whatever good came of a previous government or a pure luck. And blame whatever is going bad to previous government/other parties or external enemies. I think that SEALs team and Intelligency guys are the true heroes.

Probably could've gotten him sooner but the Bush admin was focusing on getting us into Iraq which sucked up so much money,resources and lives and is still a big current issue so let's not applaud any administration too loudly.
Let's be grateful for one of our enemies being eliminated instead of being hateful toward other americans just because we don't agree politically. The hate is getting pretty sad when this country really needs to pull itself together.

Ground Rules Going Forward
Since we are scattered all across the USofA (and Canada), and since 92.38% of us on this forum are "dudes" (according to the poll on the right side of my screen), I think we should set some ground rules going forward for how we deal with the aftermath of today's events. Most notably, how we should interact with any of the participants in the operation.
Rule #1 - If you meet one of the SEAL/CIA guys who were on this operation in a restaurant/bar, you should buy them a beer. Immediately. It's worth $4 to say thank you. (I also think we - as men - should do this for ANYONE who served overseas for our country. But that's another discussion...I'll focus this on the Bin Laden hunters.) In fact, you should pay for their meal, too. I am of the opinion that these 40 guys should never have to pay for a drink, meal, mortgage, car payment for the rest of thier lives. But that's just me.:cheers:
Rule #2 - You should never attempt to out-manuever one of these guys at a bar/club in an attempt to pick up a woman. First, they deserve it (they have "permanent dibs", unless the girl is already yours). Second, they're badasses. If she's a hardcore American girl with good morals and a knowledge of the world, you will lose anyway.

And just for the record. Not only would I buy the guys on this squad a beer and their meal and stay our of their way with the girls in the bar but i would ACTIVELY try to offer them my girlfriend/wife/etc. as my respect, admiration, and thanks.

Do not get me wrong the bin Laden news is good but I think what we need to keep in context. We did take out their "general" but I am not seeing a white surrender flag from Al Qaeda. Until we see their surrender there will most likely be hell to pay for this action.

I know. That sucks.
But that's also what makes our guys in uniform so awesome. They KNOW that's all they're going to get when they strap that gear on to execute this mission...and they're ok with that.

I just got off the phone with my son who is deployed to Bagram Air Base, Afgahnastan. He said moral is high after getting the news, but thier mission isn't complete, and they remain focused.
