Volant Cold Air Intake

Sometime in the next few weeks here. Seems like cleaning the filter is the biggest pain in the ass because it took me a while to get the filter on the tube...

not too bad I think. even if it is, cleaning once every 30k miles or so isn't too bad. you're right though. the fit is tight. for me the trick was to slip the bottom side first.

Yeah, thats what I ended up doing, but not before halfway destroying the filter...My brain/muscles have two settings: gentle and rough, and gentle wasn't getting the job done. I didn't tear it though (whew!)

One other thing: When I was looking under the hood this morning checking the oil and giving the 5 day inspection of the new intake, I noticed that the large vaccum line was kinked. I used the factory one, which was shorter that the one Volant supplied. So I dug out the Volant one and slid it on, a little tighter fit but no kinks. Not sure what this line does, or even if it matters, but I figured might as well use it...

Yeah... I don't quite have a kink, but it's bending beyond its shape. I can notice a flat side where it's doing the bending, but not enough to restrict the flow. I'll keep it for now. It seems to do a better job than the one that came with the kit. Might colapse like you said (maybe during full throttle, when the suction is highest).

btw. Where do you live? I used to live in Aurora (near Saddle Rock GC) about 4yrs ago. I think that part of Aurora is called Centennial now.

I'm renting a house with some friends off Smoky Hill and Tower, so not too far from where you used to live. It used to be Aurora but now its Centennial...

Wow! I lived right there. How funny.

I think they were going to build a library next to the post office. I lived in the homes behind that.

Small world.

My appologies to other members for the off-topic post.

Wow, yeah I live right there, off Smoky Hill and Biscay called Jackson Farms. They did build the library, its really nice, although I've never been there :p

OK, back on topic people!:D

I think its time for me to purchase one, I need something to compliment the rumble of the exhaust. I also need to get a new tailpipe sent to me for my magnaflow, i think then I will be slightly happy for now.

Well guys,

after my install I tried to crank it up and no deal. It would turn over and catch but I couldnt get it to stay on. So I had no other option than to turn to this post and reread all 16 pages to find out if anyone else had had this problem. Shonuff, someone had already said what it would probably be and I went out there and turned the computer around in its port so that the hole faced the box and it cranked up on the first time.... Just wanted to say thanks for the help and this thing sounds mean as hell and I love it....

the only question I have is that the shift points seem to be different and I read that unplugging the battery and plugging it back up would reset the computer but no luck.... if anyone else can help please let me know....

I think it takes a little while for the computer to adapt to the increased intake. Might be a few days.

Keep it a little longer see what happens.

Lee,

give the tranny some time to adapt..it takes a while for the shift patterns to adapt to changes. IF they dont return to where you want, you can have the stealer reflash the tranny for you and that will reset the shift points to the OEM settings and from there it will relearn everything.

Generally, it takes about 200 miles or one tank of gas and it will be fully adjusted.

Wow! Didn't know 4runners had adaptive shifting on the tranny.

Is that all 4runners, 5speeds only, or just certain years? I have the 5speed. I think in '04 only the v8 came with 5speed.

My Mercedes (CLS500) with 7speed tranny has adaptive shifting too, but it sucks. It always gets it wrong (maybe it's my foot) and the dealer resets it and couple of month later it would develop a harsh shift from 1st to 2nd gear.

On the 4runner, I noticed a down shift harshness. Do you think resetting the adaptive shift will cure this?

i believe that only the 4th gens have it.... i also had the down shift harshness and thats related to the slip joint i believe which is a known issue with the 4runner. Mine has gotten better with the reset but its still not lexus smooth, not that it will ever be.

It seems there is a lot of good feedback for this intake kit. Does this company make an intake for the six? I saw all the members chatting own V8's.

Hey everyone with '05+ V8's with the Volant CAI installed:

Does anyone notice the sound change at 4200 rpm? It seems like it instantaneously gets louder. Anyone know what this is? Could this be the VVT-i switchover point or maybe the ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction System)?

For those who don't know what the ACIS is, basically its a set of vanes that force air in the intake manifold to take longer paths to the cylinder keeping the low rpm, low load operation smooth and quiet. At some pre-determined point, under some pre-determined throttle postition this vane opens and reduces the intake plenum length so the the air gets to the cylinder more directly. As a bi-product the intake roar gets louder, and I'm thinking that maybe this could be the cause of the sound change at 4200 rpm.

I wouldn't mind knowing where the control for the motor of the ACIS vanes is located, how it works, and what rpm it opens the vanes at...

Any info/thoughts here?

Has anyone checked the gas mileage yet? Realistically/not under WOT all of the time just because you like to hear it. :D

Gas savings is the only way that I can justify it.

Thanks

I haven't gotten to the point where I can stay out of it. Just filled up a new tank though, so I'm going to try to drive like normal and see. I installed the intake on my last tank with about 3/8's of a tank left and still got 15.5 mpg and that last 120 miles was flat out. I normally get around 17 mpg. Its going to take a while to get useful data on whether or not the fuel economy has improved.
