We should be complaining that Toyota won't offer a diesel option!! I'm a little disappointed by Toyota not offering the V8 option as well as all of us here, but if won't offer a V8 for the torque and towing ability, why won't they offer a 6cyl diesel? I know its hard with emissions but I can't see it being impossible...

Toyota was working on a diesel engine for the Tundra, just as Ford and GM were working on diesel engines for their 1/2 ton pickups. All three canceled their programs.

The pickup market is more amenable to diesels. If Toyota doesn't think it can make money on a Tundra diesel, there is absolutely no way they would put a diesel in what has become a niche SUV for them.

I, too, would like a nice torquey diesel in the 4Runner. But it simply isn't going to happen.

The Tundra diesel (or maybe it was a 3/4 or 1 ton) was suppose to launch some time in '10, when the Tundra was predicted to hit a certain sales target. That didn't happen when gas sky rocketed last summer. Gas prices shelved a lot of development for many vehicles with the exception of fuel sippers.

I don't think it would take much for Toyota to resurrect their diesel, since the have Hino (their big truck division) and Toyota now has a nice stake in Isuzu that it bought from GM.

We'll have to wait until we see it in the Tundra first before there's a chance of it in a 4Runner.

Euro emissions regulations are not as strict as US regs. And here in the US, Toyota has hitched itself to the hybrid bandwagon.

There is a negative stigma around diesels here in the U.S. Ford makes a diesel passenger car that gets better mpg's than a Prius, but you can't purchase it here in the U.S.

Out of most of the complainers of the lack of a V8 how many are really ready to replace their 4th gens? The V8 will return and I bet by next model year.

Most of the threads concerning the 5th gen are cluttered by complaints of the lack of a v8 so maybe we need a thread JUST specifically for those complainers.:whip2: hehe

The threads are also cluttered with people who don't like the styling, don't like the weight gain, don't like the interior, don't like the choices for 4WD available in the different models, don't like the lack of center diff in the SR5 and Trail Edition, don't like the color choices available this year, don't like the wheel choices, don't like the OEM tire choices, don't like the sunroof options, don't like the seat material options, don't like the lack of projectors and LEDs, don't like the steering wheel material, don't like the center dash, don't like the upright windshield,... Did I get them all?

I hope you are correct. No, I'm not ready to replace mine yet. I've got 85k on it. I hope it lasts another 85k, but you never know. I could get T-boned tomorrow.

I've been ready to replace my 4R (V8) for about 6mo now, nothing wrong with it, just ready for something new. Toyota doesn't need to wait a year for the V8, I'd like to see one in at least 6mo.

FWIW: I just had my plugs done, flush a bunch of fluids, inductor, etc. Darn thing drives like new! No way I'm stepping down to an improved V6 in a truck that weighs 400lbs more.

I LOVE my 4R.

:iagree: that's the point I'm after is a better option was once available, just like multi-mode 4WD (well standard on all 4WD V6 4th gens).

Haha, maybe just don't like the 5th at all? I think to summarize, Toyota made some improvements but also left a good amount to be desired.

How about the lack of a power rear window button on the remote for the SR5 and TE? Another downgrade.

I don't need to replace my 4Runner, and with this economy I shouldn't be spending money on new vehicles I don't really need, but I do like the 5th gen overall and if it had a V8 with 50 more horsepower and better fuel mileage I might be very tempted.

Doesn't matter what Toyota did with the 5th gen,you'll still not be able to please everybody and when a new gen debuts there's a ton of critics but this 4Runner will follow suit and sell fine and will eventually address a few of it's shortcomings and will dominate this forum in the next few years.
