Hooked up the utility trailer for the first time, and cut down a Xmas Tree!

Seriously, I can never understand people who just throw Xmas Trees on the roof of their nice vehicles, and just tie them down. The scratches and sap make me cringe. I even saw a 3rd gen with a tree hanging out of the rear window!

The same can kind of be said about ppl who buy nice vehicles and keep em in such great shape that they don't really get to use it for it's intended purpose. Different strokes for different folks :cheers:

Both of my bikes are MTN single speeds so weight isn't too much of a concern. No I usually lift the bike up and just "set" it up there then secure it. It's a little precarious but it works. I was just shocked at how the thule rack just "rattled" apart. I guess there's no reason for them to test the racks that way...so it's understandable.

From my experience, I stay away from Thule (at least with any moving parts) and stick with Yakima. They build a better rack even if are a bit more expensive. At this point in my life, I can't afford cheap.

Realized how valuable a winch can be.
Just a lowly 3,000-lb winch on my Grizz yarded out the Tundra.
Four inches of ice not quite thick enough when pulling a 3,000-lb dump trailer that also got pulled out via the Grizz winch.
Amazing.

May I ask what one was thinking when they were driving their 7000lb Tundra through a half frozen lake:beer:? I'm assuming that is part of the crossing section?

You're so right when it comes to gear. I was impressed with the build quality of the Thule swing out hitch 4 bike carrier...i mean it's got a bottle opener that comes with it! I'm more of an "overlander" so, driving down the beach one night I heard a weird clunking noise, look back and my bikes are swaying back and forth badly. I stop immediately and see that the bolt/nut had sheared completely off. I was shocked to see that, but I think the reason it was sheared, was due to the fact that the threads constructed inside the bike carrier hitch were completely stripped. The hitch and the bikes were just "there" resting in the hitch receiver. I was just lucky I wasn't on the highway when it happened. The REI salesman said that's the 3rd one he's seen that happen too.

Was actually a good road under there, but beavers had dammed two swamps in the fall, then it froze. It's never been 18 inches deep before. Tundra weighs 5,385, not 7,000. Still too much weight for ice less than a foot thick.

Welp, was out to dinner the other night with some friends...came back to the 4Runner and there was a note under the windshield wiper that said," sorry I backed into your car." Fortunately they were honest and left a name/number. They backed into the front left bumper, popped in the plastic, scraped it up and cracked the plastic. Depending on the estimated damages, maybe I'll just replace it with a new Shrockworks bumper....

Thule and Yakima are comparably priced. If anything, Thule is more expensive. They're of similar quality as well. Individual racks themselves may vary by model in terms of design weaknesses, but it has nothing to do with the brand. I worked at REI for four years and they were returned at the same rates when you compared them by brand.

I have a similar story from this past weekend, except it involved a note saying "Sorry I hit your car. Sucks anyways!". The weird thing is that I saw no damage, kept looking it over a million times throughout the day, then came to find out later that night that it was a good friend messing with me. I too wished there was damage to be able to get a Shrockworks front bumper. hwell:

pulled 3 ppl.. one guy ran off the road in his montero into a ditch. the other was an expedition that ran off the road and high centered on a curb (took a few tugs on this guy). the last was my friend in his jeep who tried to go thru a HUGE mound of snow..
