What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

I will not be pulling the instrument cluster and will assume it's what I have, but I appreciate you sending me down the rabbit hole on a slow day at work! I had no clue that was "special." Thought it was just what these came with. So, I did some googling after your post and came across the threads with Old Red and the harnesses. So, I scoured it to see who signed up to buy one. Sure enough, I found a person in NJ with a 2018 TRD ORP that had bought one. Went down the rabbit hole some more and looked at his posts. Sure enough, I think I found the previous owner of my 4R and sent him a message. Everything seems to be lining up timeline wise, based on the info in his few posts he has, and the pics he posted of it with even the same dealership license plate frame. I sent him a PM, but it's gotta be him (I hope). I knew it had to be an enthusiast that had it as it had a bunch of stuff on it already (molle panels, black valences and badges, Pro grille, black roof rails, LED interior lights, glove box and center console organizers) and now this instrument cluster.

I'm a recruiter by profession and stalking is my game. Don't hate

It's a sought-after item for sure, as the displays are hard to come by (either buy new for $350 or scour over junkyard listings, which have all been picked clean by now). And then on top of that, you need the custom harness to make it work. And Old Red is likely done making them, owing to a dwindling supply of OEM connectors. It's a much better use of the dash space than the cheap analog clock they switched to.

For sure. It's everyday info that is always nice to have in front of you instead of going through the steering wheel buttons. Not sure why Toyota couldn't keep up with that at least on the premium trims. I certainly lucked out on this 4R. The previous owner definitely saved me a few bucks and did a bunch of the necessary little upgrades ahead of time.

Haha I love it. When I bought my Trail in 2016 this was a pipe dream. It hadn't been figured out so and then I lost track of it.. then found out he had done multiple runs of the harness before one of the mods here had a power trip and he left.. only to find him on 4Runners.com forum with only 2 harnesses left over so I felt fortunate as I was seriously bummed to find out my Trail only came with that boring cheap clock.. All the 4Runner literature at the time showed the interior pics with the Accessory Meter Display (Old 2014 stock photos)...

Honestly, no it’s not nearly as bad as the media would make you believe. Is there a massive problem with the homeless/transient population? Yes. Is there an insane amount of political unrest? Yes. Is the city literally on fire? Only some of the time.

Obviously the media will exaggerate things for more views/clicks and while I’m not happy about the state of things in the city, I don’t feel unsafe living here. As fast as getting caught in a drive by shooting, it was more of a “wrong place, wrong time” kinda thing. I was at a semi-fancy cocktail lounge in a part of town known for being a hippy/vegan/fashion centric area. Not the type of place you’d expect there to be gang violence. The police think that it happened because that particular bar closes at 2:30AM while most around it close at 2AM. So it boils down to bad luck more than anything.

As fast as getting caught in a drive by shooting, it was more of a “wrong place, wrong time” kinda thing. I was at a semi-fancy cocktail lounge in a part of town known for being a hippy/vegan/fashion centric area. Not the type of place you’d expect there to be gang violence. The police think that it happened because that particular bar closes at 2:30AM while most around it close at 2AM. So it boils down to bad luck more than anything.

ya sometimes it is wrong place at wrong time and just bad luck, or in your case good luck because you weren't seriously injured. I'm almost 3000 miles away from portland but for some reason I see a lot of news out of there on my feeds, largely political unrest-related though

Gotta put “weren’t injured” in quotation marks. I actually did get hurt, I got shot twice in the left thigh. One was a graze and the other a ricochet that only penetrated about 1/4-5/8 of an inch deep. I’ll survive with some gnarly scars and it’ll take me a couple weeks to be walking normally again but apart from that I’m doing alright.

Portland, Oregon. If you google search shootings in Portland on 4/30/22, you'll find a few articles talking about how crazy of a night it was for the police. There were 3 shootings that night. I was in the one on the "3200 block of SE Hawthorne".

Regular day in Portland. If you enjoy nice things, it's time to leave and never look back. It's like living in Baltimore or Detroit. Why? Portland averaged 3.62 shootings per day last year, 1319 shootings total. That's tripled from 2019 and 2022 is looking to be worse than 2021 so far.

Talons Garage CAT protection

Yesterday 4th I installed a protection plate on my 2016 off road premium. It was easy and the product is well made in aluminium 1/4 inch thick. It will give me peace of mind and make it very difficult for thieves to get at the CATS and it serves as an additional "bash" plate.

As for the dash setup, I like my basic analog clock, although I do miss having the date up there.

Updated valances to TRD Pro black

This was my second time as I pulled the ones off my 2019 previously and had them wrapped. I did the front without pulling the bumper, and discovered that eight-year-old nylon trim clips that are hard to reach are a lot stiffer than new ones. Ow. If anyone in the SoCal area wants some slightly scuffed silver valances to experiment with they are free for pickup. Also have a NIB never used OME 10mm spacer (aka trim packer) if anyone wants it.

Was able to get my parts pile installed over the last few weeks, minus the 1" rear cornfed spacer. May end up forgoing that. It's just about level with a 3/8" or so difference F/R and I'm getting a little lift from my rear airbags already. Still need to get alignment perfect too as it's pulling a little bit right. Told the shop to do 4.5-5 degrees of caster, but could only do 4.5 without knocking camber out. May try dropping it a little to 4-4.5 and make sure they put a little difference side to side to accommodate the crowned roads.

Overall pretty pleased with the setup. Will hopefully be more pleased once the alignment is perfect. Rides a little firmer for sure, but big bumps are better and it's more controlled. I had 15 bags of mulch and some other stuff in it over the weekend and the rear Fox 2.0s really helped with weight control.

Nope, just on road. You can definitely feel it. You get that "floaty" aired down feeling like the reviews say. Now that the new suspension is in I'll hopefully get it out in the next week or two.

Honestly for what it costs and how easy it is to install I don't think you can go wrong. May be one of those "get on it while you can" type of mods before they go away for awhile. He's having a hard time getting connectors. I got it for that reason and I think it's just a cool mod, even if I won't use it that often. Also, with the new suspension i wanted to make sure I'd be able to get the most out of it when necessary.

New Nokian Outpost AT tires

Still working my way through the break in miles but I put new tires on her today.

I went with the new Nokian Outpost AT in stock 265/70r17 size. Elected to go with the SL load range. They are only 30.5lbs per tire - making them one of the lighter AT options out there - and designed to do well in snow and light AT while behaving nicely on the road. We'll see how they hold up but my local tire guys said that due to their compound and a Kevlar-esque sidewall they are very durable for their weight. I've run heavy tires before on prior vehicles and always regretted it. Hopefully these will do me good for dispersed camping, snow, light off road etc. I'm not looking to rock crawl and intend to keep my 4runner as stock as possible, given how capable (yet expensive) they are straight out of the box.

I took a detour from the tire store and ran them through mud, rocks, gravel and sand this morning and they did great. They feel the same as the stock tires on the road so far. Quiet. Rain and snow is forecast this weekend, so we'll see how they do. No lingering gravel in the treads which is great to see.

This was a low cost upgrade. The tire store gave me $400 for the 5 stock tires (only 200 miles on them). Only $775 out the door for the 5 x new shoes (including the spare) after a little negotiating.
