Added a 12V port on the rear console. It's just a plastic plate adhered over the ashtray hole.

haha no way! I've been working on the exact same thing. I pulled out the ashtray (including the metal backing) and designed a 3D printed part with your standard plastic L-snaps so you can snap it right into the hole and pry it out with a flathead if you need to.

I shaved down the snaps on this part (3D printed with SLS, made out of Nylon) and remeasured so now my CAD matches the part that fits

I still need to paint it and get everything installed. More pics to come in a week or so...

I haven't read Moore yet but I'll have to look a little closer at him. How's he compare to this guy? One of my top 3 favorite authors.

I'm with Habanero on this one – I've heard the name but never read anything. I'll be sure to check him out too. In fact I think I have a few credits over at Audible.com I might be using soon!

Me too, but still a great author. The Serge Storms series is somewhat along those lines but sharper. Different style but not. My current favorite series. Always up for new reads if you know of any along those lines.

Sadly most of my reading these days is boring stuff and I rarely get to read for sheer entertainment anymore – so I haven't run across many authors of this sort. Wish I could throw out some good names but nothing comes to mind unfortunately.

wash waxed, cleaned and treated the interior, it needed it after a summer of back roads.
greased the drive shafts and a under car inspection
looks good to go for winter and snow.

looked at radio wiring, guess my head unit is taking a dump. everything is wired ok and tight, just keeps turning off by itself or lights up and does nothing except make the antenna go up and down. Then some days it all good

Rear seat covers

Received my rear seat covers from Wet Okole a day early, so of course I dropped everything to install them. They're made to match my front seat covers that I've had on for 2+ years already and have been very pleased with: full piping, taupe base color and black piping.

Yep I'm gonna sell them, look for a thread in a week or two or shoot me a PM! I was planning on selling them with 1, 2, or no holes (so you can drill out a custom sized hole).

I'll give away the file for free in 6-12 months, I just want to make a small profit to cover the cost of another project I'm working on, which is a 3D scan of the right SR5 mudflap (which can easily be mirrored to give you a left mudflap). I have the 3D scan but I still need to clean up the 3D mesh and figure out an economical way to 3D print them.

Just bought a 1998 4wd after several months of searching. Check engine light on, fuel light stuck, A/C not cooling, timing belt replacement and whatever else they may find. Looks great. Runs great. Pricing Tundra brake swap. I may choose to do the brake swap myself.

Somebody did a little cap instead of the whole mudflap, though I don't think they are selling them anymore. That would probably be a better seller (stay out of the way of sliders, not get caught on rocks, but fill in that bottom few inches of the flare).

Just curious which modeling software you use? I'm a Solidworks user and occasionally use CATIA.

Search lower ball joint failure to get an idea of what's involved. It's happened to all sorts of 3rd gens. Also seriously consider replacing the other side. How many miles did it have on it?

To clarify, your lower ball joint failed, not your axle. When it let go it took out the other stuff with it.

Thank you, whatever went first, it definitely took a bunch of other stuff with it! It's got about 225,000 miles. The drivers side ball joint was replaced not too long ago. Apparently she should have replaced this side too. The shop where it's at said $1000 just to get it drivable. My sister's shop (across town) said about $700 based on what I told them. Either price is above what I have at the moment :-( Going to have to find a shop that I can pay to store it until I get the $$. Or maybe someone crazier than me will buy it as is? As much I love this truck & wanted to keep it, I may have to get out while I'm behind :ballchain:

This is a VERY commonly discussed issue on the forum here. Seems to happen often enough unfortunately. The common wisdom is that these balljoints are a wearable service item and should be replaced with OEM parts on a scheduled basis. This seems to be the best way to prevent what happened to you.

Thank you for your comment, all OK! It came apart at about 20 mph on a back street, thankfully not at 70mph on the freeway. The drivers side ball joint was replaced not too long ago. The shop probably told her to replace the other side but I'm sure $$ was an issue. The shop I have my 4runner at now said $1000 just to get it drivable :-0 My sister's shop (across town) quoted $700 over the phone. That's for upper & lower ball joints, Drive Axle & a brake line. Either way I can't afford it right now, so I'm going to have to find a shop that offers storage too.

As much I love this truck and wanted so bad to keep it, I'm afraid it will be the (literal) death (or at least bankruptcy) of me. Maybe I can find someone crazier than myself who will buy it as is? Naw.....! No one is crazy enough to pour $1000's into an 18 year old truck that will be worth maybe $2000 when it's all said & done, right? Everyone on this board seems so level-headed and practical ;-)

Sadly this a problem that could have been avoided for $110 in parts and an hour of time.

You can probably sell it as-is to the right person, I'd think, and the repair is fairly cut and dry. Or maybe it becomes a donor truck for someone restoring/refurbishing one. 3rd Gens are plentiful and desirable.

If it were mine, I'd fix it myself and get the experience.

It will be worth more than $2000 fixed. Haven't you heard, these things are now going UP in value!!! Because people that don't know their vulnerabilities (ball joints, radiators, rusty frame) let them die... so there are less and less every year. Take care of those things and they will go half a million km so they are now equivalent to a new $40,000 modern SUV.

For me, it's totally worth it because I love the truck and would be spending WAY more money if I got something much newer that I liked as much as my 4Runner. I bought mine about a year ago for $6500 and with all the repairs and catch-up on preventative maintenance I'm still under <$10k for a reliable, capable truck (vs $40k for a new SUV/truck that really isn't all that different, and probably isn't offered with a manual transmission).

For you.... well that's a different story. Psychologically, you probably are never going to be comfortable driving it, even after it has brand new ball joints (or at least I wouldn't, if that had happened to me). So that kinda ruins the experience. On top of that, it looks like you have a lot of rust. That's only going to get worse and cause more and more issues. Some people are super committed to slowing down the rust and extending the life of their truck, but it doesn't sound like you're ready to jump on that bandwagon. Honestly, I think it makes the most sense for you to just get it back to being drive-able and then sell it :/
