What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Finishing up my sleeping platform and storage. I'm really struggling with the damn drawers! So much for my college education, should have gone to trade school lol.

I got my runner inspected...

needed a new front bumper, minus the lower valence, gas tank strap, pass rear bumper and needed all new body mount bushings.

I did everything but body mounts. with weather getting colder and having 2 young kids, figured i have the shop do it.

Did a small front end lift by adding 1/2" top plate spacers, along with new shocks.

I went with KYB KG9025 Gas-a-Just shocks, basic OEM replacement. Here they are side by side:


To install the top spacers, I replaced the original top plate studs with longer studs:


Here is the shock assembly with the spacer on top:


After driving around the block, I rechecked the hub to flare distance - it went from 21.25" to about 22.75", a bit more than I planned for. Hopefully it'll settle in a bit after driving some more (otherwise I'm going to have to raise the rear to make it level, not sure how my wife is going to like that). Here's a comp photo:


Also did an open heart surgery on the temperamental lift gate light switch, using [MENTION=5345]habanero[/MENTION]'s thread - habanero's 1996 4Runner Build-Up Thread - Page 22 - YotaTech Forums

All the details on how to remove and open the liftgate switch are in her post above. When I opened mine though, I didn't find any bugs or obvious corrosion:


So I removed the contacts and the plunger:

Cleaned all contacting surfaces with 600 sandpaper, then applied some dielectric grease:


Put it back together, hit it with some Trim Black, and called it done:

Really nice having the light come on with the liftgate open, and no more getting auto-locked out!

This makes my day, thanks! Totally agree with you about the members here, including yourself, there's so many great ideas and how-to info here- love seeing the many different contributions and gathering information for future tinkering.

Not much happening lately, except we had rain that turned into freezing rain that froze in my sunroof drains then turned into snow that accumulated and later melted and peed all over my passenger seat because of slow frozen drainage. Teach me to not remove the thin layer of snow/ice off the roof!

Also poured some rubbing alcohol into the washer fluid to keep it from freezing.

Road Trip

Just got back from a 2k road/hunting trip with 800 one way and 1100 coming home extra lbs of gear added. Running 80-85mph for 1800 miles of it getting 15mpg is not bad with 280K on her. Bagged a few (buddies also) goats for the freezer and headed home!! Set a new personal best (800 yds) but my buddies *****ed the whole time saying it was too small and uncomfortable. Didn't bother me a bit....whiny babies. Tried to upload pics...but continued to fail.

Funny, most people complain about mine but nothing I’d rather drive. When you say goats are you talking antelope? Never was a fan of the meat but you probably like bear meat too ?

Added some lights in the lift gate because using headlamps to cook gets old. This project wasn’t fun. You REALLY have to pay attention to the wire routing for when the window rolls down. Snapped 2 wires.... Imperative that you tape it snugly to an existing loom to avoid the window snagging. Then fishing the wires through the door and the rubber loom into the cabin. Notch out a big chunk of time during daylight and mild temps so you don’t rush it and cause crappy work and repeating steps.

Saturday Work

My 98 Radiant Red SR5 "Roscoe" got NEW plugs, wires, coil packs & valve cover gaskets. Will turn over 275K on Monday. Have owned him 2 1/2 years. Now has more power than it's had in my ownership. All plugs tips were really worn but color was good. #4 looked burned where insulator meets metal threads. #6 wire boot was shorting inside spark plug tube. Best of all, did it myself! Saved gobs of cash...

finished valve cover gaskets job today...wasn't terrible, lots to take off. Unfortunately I broke the single pole wire that delivers the engine temperature to the gauge cluster, so I don't have an operating temperature gauge in the vehicle. Good thing I have a bluetooth reader I guess.

Finally Offroad

I took this baby to the forests today. 200 mile round trip but definitely worth it. It's amazing how it handles on the leave-packed dirt with stock wheels and tires, so I probably wouldn't get aftermarket ones for the time being. As you can see it does have body lift but again, that was because PO put giant tires on them. I only went off road for only couple hundred feet but it was already lots of fun. Definitely love it and will come back once it starts to snow!

Fun filled afternoon of replacing the final center console lights (ECT and rear window switch) and continuing work on a Satoshi grill, still in the filling and priming stage... Sooo much sanding!

Tell you what I did, I took out my passenger seat to fix the left side rail that it slides on because I messed it up a little while back. I figured the best way to fix it was to take the seat as I have done that before, but this time after I fixed it and everything was back in order, I bolted the seat back in like usual and I accidentally cross-threaded the bolt, and while backing it out, the nut that is tack welded to the body that holds the seat broke. And the nut that broke it is only one that is not accessible from under the truck, so now I am going to have to cut the body and weld it back together to get that nut out.
