What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Needed to see some progress after unsuccessfully chasing an oil leak so I tackled the under hood lighting.


Toggle should be here tomorrow but the pin switch gets the job done.


I ordered 3' of the high density waterproof LEDs from Led Supply. They sent me 39" so I got that going for me, which is nice. Actually that'll just drain the battery faster - crap. It really highlights all the dirt, though.

Nice, your installation looks better than mine! It's one of those "why didn't I do this years ago" sort of things. You might get spoiled like I am, now whenever I open another vehicle's hood I'm expecting the engine bay to light up!

Installed my 3rd starter at 354,179 ..got tired of changing orielys reman starters every year so I bought a Bosch reman that was recommended to me by the local starter and alternate rebuilder ...I’m in search for a factory one to get rebuild ....Also I absolutely hate changing the starter on a 3rd gen 4Runner

Check out ebay listings from LKQ. I'll eventually buy an OEM used starter and alternator from them to rebuild in my down time at work.

Hmm, I'm wondering if my PO did this before then removed whatever lights he had. I had the same switch in the same spot when I got the car, but the wires to it were clipped and just tucked away. Was always very curious what it went to, I never saw one of those pin switches before
If he did I'm gonna be pissed, that would've been sick :brick:

I've also seen those switches for aftermarket alarms. If it senses the hood opens while its armed it will set the system off.

I bought this one in October.

I broke one of the little center console arms. The hinge was broken when I purchased the truck, and a sideways pressure as I got positioned in the seat moved the lid enough to snap the little snap-fit pin (male side of the clip) off the arm.

I used some flex glue and black fabric on both sides of the hinge and though stiffer than I'd like, it worked great. (It's not like I open and close the center console a lot.) The center console lid latches in perfectly and stays aligned.

I modeled a replacement for the arm in TinkerCad and mirrored it for the other arm (for some reason, they're not perfectly mirrored...). I installed it and the little snap-fit pin snapped off again. I think the pin was too small and the torque applied was parallel with the layers of the 3D printed body, which created a weak point. I beefed up the pin. I beefed it up a little too much, in fact, and it wouldn't snap into the lid's hole. A little sandpaper in a circular motion around both the arms' pins fixed the problem. They finally snapped tightly into place.

Now I have a fixed hinge and arms. The console doesn't flop around or off if opened too far.

Got the SCS Gen5's and 285/70r17 Falken wildpeaks installed. Rides way better than the LT 10 ply duratrac I had before. This weekend I'll do the Depo LED tail lights and a 22 inch light bar from Extremeled.

Love the way these wheels look but the teal decal was pre installed from SCS so I might swap that out for a white decal or just remove the decals completely. Any input on the decals?

I got to detail/polish the 4runner I have owned for about two weeks. Was not able to get all the swirls out but looks almost as good as new. I cannot wait to get it dirty. Forgot to take before pictures.

Has been my mechanic for over 20 years. 600 was if he needed to go into the steering wheel. He said it could be sensors in a seat or the seat belt but he would pull the codes to narrow the choices. A bad mechanic wouldn't have told me to cover it up with tape.

Wife found replacement power antennae mast at her dad's. I was able to remove mast but plastic gear belt was broke in middle and the other end would not come up with motor running. Will have to remove motor too fix. Installed new wiper blades and just got acquainted with Pops. Less wind noise than Xterra and smoother shifting. Will need shocks and lift gate struts asap

As a mechanic myself, I can say that he's bad mechanic. That's a safety system that could be disabled completely depending on what's wrong with the system. He should have priced out a diagnosis fee then gone from there instead of just throwing out a random number. If it's a dash airbag that airbag alone is more than $600. Bottom line is a bad mechanic told you to cover it up with tape. Also, just because someone has done something for x amount of years doesn't mean they're a good mechanic or good at a particular job.

Corner light

I had my corner light just strapped to a bolt for some time now. It made a weird noise everytime I close my door. I took some sweet time to really fix this and it went away. I also clean my mass air flow sensor

Replaced the fuel filter on my 3RZ, which is incredibly hard to access (under the intake plenum, bolted to the block). Almost as infuriating as replacing the valve shims up against the firewall. I'm pretty sure it was original, and after 298k miles, lots of black fuel came out.

I was fortunate to do mine at the same time as I changing out the alternator. Turns out that it's way easier with the alt out of the way.

I could see that being way easier. I considered removing the plenum for a hot second before being discouraged by needing to get new gaskets.

There are any number of brackets on my truck that I would’ve done differently had I been a rivnut ninja at the time.
