What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Toyota Techstream can activate the ABS pump. The Toyota dealership will have Toyota Techstream, or you can buy a pirated copy from China and install it on a laptop with a cd drive and usb drive and do it yourself.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't that only work for a 01-02 with the updated ABS system?

I'm aware. That's why I can't say it will work in his, but I can confirm that it works in a vehicle that's not a 01-02 like he said in post #33585. 99-00 are in the same sub generation so it may work for him, but I don't have a 99 to say that it will work.

I wish I could say this is an April Fools' Day prank or joke, but it's not. My rear diff has decided it needs replaced. It felt perfectly fine up until this morning. Once I hit around 30 mph the vibration/rumble starts and by the time I got up to 60 on my way to work it felt like I was in a massage chair and driving on the rumble strips. The mirrors were vibrating so much I couldn't see anything besides one big blur. I pulled it into work, put it on the lift, and had someone drive it to 50 mph to verify my fears. One of the side bearings in the diff has had enough of this world. Time to find another rear diff. If anyone near Hot Springs, AR has an assembled 4.10 non-elocker rear diff for sale please let me know.

Spindle gussets! More deets in my build page.

Very helpful! Thank you!

Did you ever figure out how to activate the ABS pump then?

lol, judicious use of right foot on dirt roads. Speed up, slam on brakes.. rinse and repeat as needed. Thankfully, I live on a private drive that's a half mile of dirt with only 2 homes, so I don't have to even leave the property to do this. I didn't really notice much difference, but Did see a little more air come out.

I've never had issues with changing brake fluid, don't know if it's luck, simple experience (started turning wrench for money in the mid-90's), using a vacuum changing system (Pela oil extractor), or some combination.

Put some serious miles on ‘Ol Ruby yesterday and today from Kansas City to Denver then from Denver to Capitol Reef.

Everything is going smooth so far. The engine did pretty well over the Rockies considering it’s 22 years old with 210000 miles. Not losing any oil. Coolant temps are staying within spec. Everything feels and sounds fine.

Transmission feels strong and good. Had to hold 2nd gear a few times to get up and over some mountain passes.

Although I’m really glad I was continuously monitoring my ATF temps. Even with the external cooler running in series, it’s so easy to starting pulling just a little in 4th on a long slight incline (but not enough for the truck to shift into 3rd) and then those ATF temps just keep climbing unlit you turn OD OFF!!

I think after this trip I will do the 2LO mod, where I add a toggle switch to interrupt the signal from the front diff ADD switch, allowing me to shift into “4LO” without actually sending power to the front wheels. There were a few VERY steep inclines near Capitol Reef that were paved and dry (high traction) but so steep that low gears would’ve really helped my ATF temps. Near the top of one particularly steep grade, I had to pull over and take an idle break to let things cool back down before creeping my way up the rest of the way.

I want to thank this forum. Without all of your collective knowledge and willingness to share, this truck could have NEVER made this journey!!!

Just returned home from a 500 mile road trip around the Olympic Peninsula in WA state! The runner performed great! Mostly highway, a little sand and some FS roads. We hit Ocean Shores, Forks, the Dungeness Spit, Lake Quinault, Lake Cresent and Port Townsend. Averaged about 19-20 mpg for the trip. About a tank and a half of gas. Love using this truck/car/suv for what it's meant for which is UTILITY! We slept in it two nights, had the seat bottoms out so had plenty of room to stretch out. Also hit 250k miles which was big for me! Owned the truck for 4 1/2 years, got it at 219k. Love this vehicle even more after a great trip!

Also replaced my battery right before we left last week. Woke up one morning and car was dead as dead can be. Battery registered 4.6 volts. Crazy low. I got a jump (I'm surprised it even held a charge to be honest) and went to get it tested at auto zone. They said it was bad so I drove up to walmart where i bought it. This is the second time i replaced this battery. It died in 2020 and got a replacement for free, now it died two years later. They gave me another free one even though they have a 90 day return policy for batteries!?!? Kind of ridiculous since the batter has a sticker that says 3 year warranty but apparently thats through the "manufacturer".
Did you go to Tahuya while out there? Ive heard its awesome but its such a drive from the Everett area, probably much less for you. A couple years ago my bud went with a FB group and was in a convoy of maybe 30+ 4Runners and Tacomas  Looked like perfect wheeling for our vehicles
Port Townsend has some fantastic roads for bikes and sports cars. The area around Old Eaglemount Road is ripe for some fat pulls and loud rips :smokin:

I frequently climbed in my 2WD-AT, always turning OD off, which is essentially the key to lower tans temps.

Great pics! Enjoy your travels and your truck.

You didn't get the matching LCA reinforcements? Tsk tsk :fish:
LCAs are not a solid-mounted, single forged arm 22" long that carry the rolling weight of the entire front end, they are boxed and ride on bushings.

I plan to reinforce my spindles, too, favoring LCA skids plates over reinforcement.
JZiggy you left out the eimkeith shock tower plates... Did you need to extend the 3 top hat bolts? Will you weld them in the future?

Installed an ARB bumper awhile ago and decided to repurpose the frame rail extension pieces that came with the bumper for a Tacoma. To extend my bump stops, I cut a piece of flat plate, drilled a hole in the middle and stacked the plate on top of the extension piece, with the extension piece on top of the bump stop. I tacked everything together along with some tabs on the plate to keep it from rotating. I used some longer bolts (m8 x 1.25 (course thread) x 90mm) to attach the extension.

I also swapped out my steel cable on the winch to rope. I won’t be using a hook so I made a sacrificial rope loop to keep the winch rope protected from uv/trail damage. The sacrificial rope loop is double braided polyester. I found a YouTube video that explains how to make it.

Stock studs had just enough length.

I may weld them in, but probably won’t get around to it for a while.

I attempted this this week. I live on a dirt road too so that was the most convenient thing to happen to me in awhile haha! I slam on the brakes and I can't tell if the noise is from ABS or the rotors slipping past the calipers. I also have to pump the brakes to make the rear activate.

Does your brake pedal pulsate under heavy braking? If yes, ABS pump is working. If no, ABS pump is not working.
