What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

After much delay, I finally got down and painted the frame. IDK if I got more POR-15 on my arms and legs or on the frame, but most of the rust is covered and should be good for a while now. Followed that up with a satin enamel since POR-15 doesn't do well in sunlight.

After that dried, the reassembly of the front could begin. New trak-motive extended axles, axle seals, and what not went in. After that, it's just reverse order of everything I pulled off 3 weeks ago.

Used the jack method to re-assemble the front shocks and coils without having to use any spring compressors. 1000x easier to do it this way and with my friend on the jack, we were able to install the spring/coil assembly and have it under load in about 5 minutes on each side.

Never again will I use a spring compressor (i.e. hand grenade) on my 3rd gen!

After that, its the new JBA uppers, ball joints, spindles, blah blah blah until its all together and shiny looking again!

The old 13WL TBU looks off surrounded by all new other parts. Despite what my friend says, I'm trying to "save" as many old parts as I can! I think the spindle and brakes are the only parts that haven't been replaced in this photo.

Most of you guys down south always have great Rigs, the Know how, and proper working spaces...

Not TOO jealous....am i

the jack method for doing springs and shocks is a life saver. I swore last time I did it off the car would be the last

Glad to see folks coming around to the Jack method, simple safe and cheap!
Since 2009-10 with adjustable Bilstein 5100, 6112's spring compressor don't fit.

It became even more useful because I'm an idiot.

I ordered the eibach 2.5" lift coils and not the toytec 3" so after getting it all together my buddy and I thought, "That's a LOT of rake..."

Measured hub to fender and it was only 21.5" compared to ~22.5 like we're looking for. So I know its not the best but I moved the c-clip up 2 notches for 0.5" of preload (Should give 1" of lift) and using the jack method and having all new joints, we got both sides done and torqued back to spec in under 1 hour.

Now it sits at about 22.75" hub to fender with the bumper back on which is just about perfect.

Got it aligned and now there is a bit of rubbing which I didn't have before on the pinch welds on the front fender. My buddy thinks its the caster introduced by the new JBA uppers that I didn't have before. I currently have 1" spacers on the front and rear but we might try and remove those and see if the rubbing goes away and I still get proper UCA clearance.

If not, its not terrible rubbing and is only at full stop so I should be fine for our upcoming camping trip and I can remedy it later with more inventive methods.

Removing wheels spacers will help, for sure. If you get the front re-aligned with the goal of "max caster" (not middle of the range) while keeping near 0 camber, you will likely get some clearance at the rear of the fender well too.

I'm going to toy around with it today as its my last day before a 10 day camping trip in the car. I should have UCA clearance without the spacers (I got them to clear factory UCAs on the 1st lift). I think they just aligned my car yesterday to pretty "standard specs" but the guys I usually use that are Toyota 4x4 fanatics were booked out so this shop was new to me.

I don't want to dish out another $130 for alignment if I can help it but we'll see when I get back if I can't get in to my normal guys if the rubbing persists. Its only at full lock right now and only on one side so its not terrible, but something I'll want to get taken care of eventually.

Well finally had the time to install the motor west injectors. Everything went smoothly, perfect weather, no leaks afterwards. Like a kitten, it purrs! It is so much smoother both in idle and driving around. I guess my oem injectors were going out for a bit now. Now next project is to finish the e-fan swap.

Necessity is the mother of invention, cut yourself some slack.

What is current Caster?
3.0-3.3* good return to center, it's doable on stock arms SPC 5 yrs. coming up.

Is your huckleberry.

How did you get your valley in there so clean?

OpenYota a few years ago I had to replace the lower intake gaskets as they rusted out (head to intake). During that time I did a ton of cleaning. Now I just wash it out and blow it dry. It was filthy, really bad.

Made a little drawer system for my camping gear and for a place to store the spare since I dont have a rear swing out bumper

Changed out my aftermarket (unbranded) fuel injectors for some Denso's I pulled off of a 2003 Lexus RX300. I had them cleaned and tested by Motorwest Performance :)

My rich fuel conditions disappeared instantly. Yet another endorsement that aftermarket injectors aren't a wise investment. Mine were GB Remanufacturing, completely unbranded.

If pinched for money, the Lexus RX300 injectors were $85.48 from my local pull a part and MotorWest charged $160 for the cleaning / o-ring replacements. Sure, I took a gamble that the junkyard injectors were / are good, but the overwhelming opinion is that those Densos are indestructible, hence MotorWest using them as their stock replacement for 3rd gen 4Runner fuel injectors. The grand total of $245.48 is only slight more than the cheapest option on RockAuto ($172.74 without core charge). I wish I had done this previously.

+1 for MotorWest Performance services, another warning about using aftermarket injectors.

Alignment sheet has it a 1.7* on both sides. IDK what it was before with the stock UCAs and my 3" lift.

I just got home from a 2500 mile road trip to Glacier NP and up to Banff NP and I broke one sway bar end link but other than that, everything else held up great! Got about 15mpg with the rooftop tent and all of the extra weight.

I may throw on the proper 3" lift springs and add some more length to my adjustable rear end links to try and stop the bolts from breaking. There is a loud pop now when going over bumps but that only started after breaking the end link bolt and I'm like 99% sure its just the sway bar making some contact with the rear control arm over bumps.

I'm also going to have them check the camber again. I noticed the mud/dirt on the tires was more pronounced on the inside edge of the tires so I feel like there might be a bit too much positive camber and maybe something shifted as I was driving and going on lots of trails and everything has settled in. (I guess if I'm throwing on the proper 3" lift springs and setting the pre-load back to the bottom ring on the Bilsteins, it might change all of that anyways.)

I'll just add that having my last alignment tech set caster to 'Max within Spec' fixed 99.5% of my rub (rear of fender well when stuffed and steering locked). I have mild 5100 lift/33" pizza cutters/1.25 spacers/methods w 4.5 BS/0 OS (standard for 16" toyota wheels they sell).

I'll just add a pic of my rig stopping to take a leak on the way home this evening.....

Well last night I bit the bullet and ordered all the stuff to upgrade my stereo. 25 year old speakers don't sound the best lol. Ended up going with kenwood xt1701p 6.5" front component and xr1701 6.5" 2 ways for the rear door. A kenwood xr401-4 4 channel amp for the door speakers, a kicker powered 10" sub for under the seat. And lastly a jensen car140mw w/sirius xm receiver.

Another staycation project added lol.
