What if the taillights looked like these?

Same here... I really like toyota's (as you can tell by my previous car history) and really wanted a 4Runner but just couldn't fall in love with the front end of the 4th Gen since the front end looked a bit curvey like a soccer mom car and far different from the Tacoma. The 5th, 3rd, and 2nd Gen have more truck style (Tacoma) front ends that look more masculine.

Seriously Jed, what's the point? You always feel the need to trash some element of the 5th, yet you hang around this section all the time. not to mention you're sitting home at night starring at a 5th while you do your little photoshop. the 5th looks better then the 4th, hands down. the 4th looks very wussy in comparison. and anyone here that owns a 5th will agree, otherwise they would have bought a 4th or earlier.

I like them the way they are, unique style, but I do see possible problems with damage since they do stick out so far.
One thing that was not mentioned was that it is an easy way to see if you have a tail light or brake light that is out
You can look in your side view at night and see them both. Doubt that was Toyota purpose when they designed them, but I guess it could be useful?

I'm waiting for the sixth generation, and I hope they make the interior a bit smaller and let me have a good 360 view like I can get in my 3rd. The 5th has poor third window visibility. My 3rd has awesome legroom, and until I become a fat-ass I see no need for a cavernous feel to an off-road vehicle--unless the space is going right to luggage.

The Highlander never even entered my thoughts, but now that you mention it, there are some obvious similarities. Look at the rear spoiler for example....it looks almost identical. The license plate surround also looks very similar.
The point is that it wouldn't take too much to improve the back end of the current design. Smooth out the taillights and dump the "ground effects" hanging below the rear bumper of the SR5 & Limited and it looks much improved to me.
I agree. All 5th gens should have the Trail body kit....leave it as is on the Trail and paint it body color for the SR5 and Limited.
I think the SR5 comes that way in Canada, right?
Good point, TTown! I meant the headlights....which I also find offensive, but not quite as bad...at least the tail lights are in the back where not as many people will notice
SR5 in canada does come with *basically* the TE exterior. I've only ever seen it in that dark gray, though.
If I'm ever unfortunate enough to need new front and rear bumper skins, I'll strongly consider doing the full trail exterior on my BP SR5. For now, it is just cost prohibitive. Don't get me wrong, I think my SR5 looks really nice as is. It is missing a rugged element, though, with the tall side skirts and body kit bits below the rear bumper.
