What's the best OBD2 for a 3rd Gen 4Runner?

I am looking at purchasing an OBD2 for my 2002 4Runner...any recommendations?

My VSC Trac, VSC Off & Check Engine lights came on and I am guessing that maybe it's an O2 sensor, but, would like to have the comfort of having my own OBD2 without having to trust a dealer. Any suggestions?

Two words: trans temp.

I have done a ton of research on Scangauge vs Ultragauge and I think it really boils down to the trans. temp. If someone feels like they need it, they can get that plus all the other goodies with a Scangauge. Otherwise, I think ultragauge is just as good.

Now I need to decided if I want/need to monitor trans temp...:ybrick:

If it's a 96-98, it doesn't matter if the reader will do tranny temps, our computers don't have a sensor for them. That's why I bought an Ultragauge.

I use torque pro, I've never come up short on anything I needed it to do yet. It's a bargain.

I got 2 different elm327 modules from ebay (one mini blue and other bigger black) but they don't work on my 97 sr5. Not sure why.. is the Amazon one listed here guaranteed to work??

Do they work on other vehicles?? Have you checked your adapter settings? If it won't work on ANY car, you should head over to Forums ? Torque

Is Torque communicating with the adapter or is the adapter not talking to the car?

Nothing is guaranteed to work if you don't set it up correctly.

That said, this is the one I have and it has more and better reviews and works perfectly on my '99 4Runner, '99 BMW 323i and son's 2008 Hyundai. It also costs more.

You can monitor transmission temps on your iPhone as well.

The mini one (blue casing) works with other cars, I checked with a Honda Civic. That one used to be detected by Torque when plugged into my 97 SR5, but it was not able to connect through it. I thought the bigger units would work, but the one which I received is not even getting detected by torque. I have not tried the bigger on on other car yet.

IMHO it's nice to have a dedicated device such as a Scangauge because you are limited to how many things you can do on your phone at once. So if you are driving with your phone in the car you may be trying to use a single device for phone calls, music, nav, and now Torque.

Each person is different and each situation is different but me personally I use my phone for music and nav even though I have factory nav in my DD, I find waze much more effective. If I was trying to use torque too it would just be too much.

That's pretty much the decider. If you want a full-time monitor that is always active while you are driving, get a ScanGuage. If you want to do occasional diagnostics in depth and take advantage of graphing and other capabilities, get a Torque set-up. (Unless, of course, you want to build a tablet into your truck as a permanent dedicated display, then Torque is absolutely the way to go for full-time, too.)

No way is Torque plus phone a good approach for full-time monitoring.

Thanks, I will go home and check. Where is this fuse located, I remember checking the fusebox under the hood and everything was fine. But will double check and also check the fusebox under the steering wheel.

You could get an el-cheapo china android device and run Torque on it as a dedicated device. The only drawback would be having to run an external power source.
