Shield 9mm w MagGuts kits for an extra round in the mag.
Total of 18 rds... 8+1 in the Shield, 9 in the spare mag.

How do the MagGuts work? I've heard they're tricky to install...looks like it is a dual spring with a really short metal follower which allows enough room to fit an extra round in?

Yup, a little tricky to install but it works well. Stock on left, MagGuts on right.

Anyone else have an "every day Carbine" or a truck rifle?

I keep a Daniel Defense MK18 mounted with Aimpoint T2 and surefire P2X Fury as a truck rifle.

Keep a chest rig and a bunch of 30 round magazines loaded with MK318 MOD-0, MK262 MOD-1, Federal Gold Match 69 Gr and Speer Gold Dot 55 Gr.

I have been known to keep a 300 blackout "pistol" in the rig at times. Depending on location and situation. 3-6 mags kept with ozark sub sonics 208 V-max. Man I can't wait to order my can.

Sometime the Larue tOBR 7.62 broken down and stored with 6 mags. Takes a minute to put it together but you would be hard pressed to get out of range in that minute.

Only when I'm on the way to/from the hunting plot or to/from the range. Leaving something in the truck, plain sight or otherwise, freaks me the hell out. Must be the Army in me where I can't stand to be more than an arms length from my rifle unless it's secured in the arms room (or the liberty safe anchored to a rebar weave and 10,000psi pad in our storm shelter).

That's a beautiful rifle (your DD Mk18), though. My friend just bought an M4v11 Typhoon from them. I thought all ARs were for the most part created equal... but this thing is a work of freaking art.

Yea, I understand the issue with keeping it secure. I built a custom vault in the back of my runner to house the rifle and some other precious items. Unless you knew what to look for, you would not notice it at all. It would take some serious time and effort to get into as well.

For sure not all AR's are created equal. The term "Milspec" gets tossed around a lot and mostly it's marketing and not really indicative of wether a company follows/exceeds the standards set forth in the Technical Data Package for the M4 Rifle and wether or not the specific company does proper QA/QC/Testing.

Some companies follow the TDP from the military to the letter, some kind of follow it, some don't care at all about it and others go way above and beyond the standards set forth in the TDP.

A few of the better Companies that follow/go beyond TDP are:
Daniel Defense
Bravo Company Manufacturing
Larue
LMT
Knights Armament Company
Noveske
Sionics Weapons Systems
Colt

Here's a pretty good write up about what constitutes a quality M4 rifle per the TDP from Rob_S at tactical yellow visor.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...7b0By2CJYg8/pub?single=true&gid=5&output=html

He used to keep an updated list of manufacturers and how they did or didn't adhere to the TDP, but too many people took it personally and ego's got in the way/hurt so he discontinued it.

For sure not all AR's are created equal.

I've handled and fired probably a two dozen ARs (civilian) and with the exception of the DD, they all looked, felt and fired about the same. Including the two Bushmasters and one Windham I own personally. Granted I spend most of my time treading water in the middle and bottom end of the market. None of the high-end rifles I fired (outside of the DD) felt any different than the mid tier - bottom tier rifles.

Due to being in the Army for 13 years, I've handled and fired at least a dozen M4s and M16s and could tell the difference (aside from select fire) between those and the civilian ARs in how the parts fit together, and the cohesiveness of the "package" despite their age and wear.

The DD was the first that looked, felt and fired (cycled) better than the M4s or M16s I've been issued. It is a work of art in my book. A work of art that meets or exceeds Military TDP... best of both worlds.

Unfortunately they also cost as much as I paid for my first 3rd gen... soooo priorities... heh.

The blackout and or the Larue both come with me if I have them and leave my rig. I'm funny that's way, like when I am on a job site. My boss know what bag "not to look for tools in". It's always in my vision and usually not more than 10-15 feet from one of the 2 of us. And for when we have to make a store run he has a vault built in to the back seat of his truck. It's truly great working with like minded people. Especially when they are one of your best friend for almost 30 years.

Totally, they are expensive. But you get what you pay for. Daniel Defense makes some of the best rifles in the world. Marty Daniels is a cool guy and set out to be #1. he's killing it. They are the only AR Manufacturer to build and test every single part and piece in house- no subbing out parts at all. That's a testament to their strict standards.

I understand what you are saying about handling a large volume of rifles from different manufacturers for sure. Even though they feel and cycle in a similar fashion, there are big differences when talking percentage of rifles manufactured to known issues/failures.

And most people won't ever shoot enough to push their rifle to the point of failure in the first place. Most guys aren't taking a single 2-3 day class a year let alone multiple classes like that Shooting 1500-2000 rounds in 2 day period, getting down in the dirt, driving the rifle hard- etc.

Most guys aren't over in the sand box either, sounds like you had a good armorer(s). That can make a big difference!

Biggest things I look for in a quality AR/manufacturer:

BCG: must be made from Carpenter 158 steel properly shot peened and have properly staked gas keys and MPI and HPT tested, no batch testing, but every single bolt carrier group tested

Barrel: Barrel made from the proper MIL-B11595-E CMV Steel, HPT and MPI tested with chrome lined 1:7 twist rate and a proper 5.56 NATO Chamber with M4 feed ramps

Cold hammer forged barrel is icing on the cake and definitely my preference.

Proper "F" front sight base and parkerized under the FSB.

Properly staked castle nut and an H-Buffer and 1.14" Diameter receiver extension.

You'd be surprised at how many companies out there do not build rifles to proper specs. Are they crap- NO- but there are differences in quality of materials, quality of construction and quality control/testing.

One company could even get the same Carpenter 158 steel from the exact same a metal shop, but have a different standard/QC for the shop to follow and end up with inferior metal.

I love talking guns, can you tell? :AK47:

How long have you had the Magguts? How many rounds have you run with the upgraded mags? Any feed issues with either training or carry rounds?

I have a Shield as well and have been thinking about this for a while...

Thanks

Amen. I had two incredible armorers, one so-so, and one awful (we have 2000 rds of leftover ammo from the last range, most of which is linked 5.56 and 7.62? SURE lets store it in the arms room right next to the M249 and M240). You're spot on.

Pictured: what a crap armorer will allow to happen. This place has long since been decommissioned (it's now part of the Dallas School District), but that was in an arms room in Mesquite, TX about 6 years ago during a 15-6 investigation.

We "disposed" of the ammo by transferring it to another unit who wasn't about to deploy.

It's not a great idea to post pictures of safes in you 4 runners. Not everybody on the interwebs is upstanding. There are a few good places to put them depending on your needs. I have seen them built between the rear wheel wells for long gun storage. As well as modifying a rear seat so when you flip it up there is a small safe in there. Make the seat less comfortable I would imagine. Lots more small places available.

Do any of you guys have a "safe" in your runners??

I just have one of those small steel safes cabled to floor and tucked under the driver seat. Sure, it can be broken into with a little effort but it does the job for keeping it secure under normal circumstances.
