Willbgood Build Thread

Josh and I closed our deal for the first Production Whitson Metals Works Hydrid Bumper today.

I really excited for three reasons, one is I know it will be really well built, two, it is a unique design, and three, I get support Josh as he develops this new line!

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/128963-wmw-tooob-bumper-build-12.html

I asked josh to post some pictures of the build, I hope he does.

Waiting for my bumper is like a kid waiting for Christmas!

Nothing today, attending to the honey do list...

I stopped in several times today to post and research. I have come to the conclusion, that there is no way to repair my broken abs wire and I have to replace the unit and wire. Found it and order it online from Amazon for 104 bucks...ouch, costly mistake.

Also did some research on Ham radios and I think I am focusing on the Yaesu FTM-400DR dual band mobile transceiver. I understand it can be modified to hit on FMRS, but I have not been able to find the info, so if anyone has it, let me know. http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/fm_txvrs/5400.html

Waiting on brake lines, ABS sensor, inner tie rods, and seat covers...Not patiently.

Great thread brother! What seat covers did you order? I am considering picking up some myself. I have cloth seats, and like them. But, it might be nice to get a little protection for the fabric. I have seen some cool Neoprene style covers, I am just a bit worried that that type of fabric might get a bit warm. I don't know. I passed on a fair amount of Limited Editions because I didn't really want leather. I wouldn't mind so much now, and happy with my cloth.

How are you liking your lift so far?

I am going with leather. I purchased from the upholstery guys...awaiting delivery, at which time I will have pictures of them and the process.

I like leather.

The lift seems to be great quality and a straight forward install, although I thought the instructions needed to be update, and I told Toytec that today. I had no problem, but a rookie wrench might, and they might make serious mistakes.

I will let you know what I think of it after alignment and few thousand miles, but I think it is going to be a fine lift for a 50/50 dirt-hwy vehicle that is likely not going to be doing the Rubicon, but will log a lot of trail, logging road and camping miles.

I am pretty sure it could do the Rubicon, it's just I hate traffic...

Day 22

Spent the day fabbing brackets and figuring out just where and how I was going to mount my trans cooler and fan. I bought 14000 BTU, so it is thicker than most. Sorted it all out using tie wraps to temporarily mount it and then make sure I had the clearance I needed. Tomorrow I will mount it in and take photos.

Working on my toy is like an addiction. I did not get to today and I am jonesing. I had meetings all day, web work, and trading in between. It was a busy day.

Tomorrow I am off to One Hero at Time Las Vegas...look it up on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/events/1621360818132225/

Its a great time at a great event, to honor a veteran who has sacrificed for all of us, so if you anywhere nearby, come visit.

If you want to meet ask any of the staff if they know were will and linda are.

Spent the entire day migrating my domain and trying to get my email set up with Microsoft Outlook 365 and the new Microsoft Winda's 10.

I swear, I spent the day to talking to someone that tired hard, but was clueless, at my domain server, and Latka Gravas's brother at Microsoft. No avail. I am now waiting until Sunday for a call back...I hate change and I long for the days of NT.

Mean while I am jonesing like a crack whore looking for a rock, because my email is down and I can not communicate with anyone I need to.

I am now drinking whiskey, which I intend to do in excess of the daily recommended allowance...

Surprised the abs sensor wire couldn't be repaired....two little wires in a housing...not that I've had the 'pleasure' to try...
junkyard nab would be another option, 'less it's like 'round here and there aren't any 3rd gens about. Shiny and new will work too. :)

'tis an addiction, true. Love reading your musings!

The resistance of a splice could interfere with the sensor reading, or the splice could break. I have has resistance problems with other sensors on other applications, and I read here that folks have had problems with splicing, so I made a judgement call.

As far used, I figured taking a breke sensor of a high mileage vehicle, that was also likely wrecked, was asking for trouble. I am pretty careful when it comes to brakes.

The new price on Amazon was not to damaging, so I puled the trigger.

I like the security of having brakes I know are good and have been done right.

Thanks for the compliment about my musings.

I really appreciate the detail in which you put into your restoration. I think you drive us to do a more thorough job on each of the projects we tackle. Keep up the great work. I enjoy your thread. J.

I have been researching dash Cameras

I think this is where I am heading.

In fact I am pretty sure I will buy one or two of the others of these:

VICOVATION:::Vico-Marcus 5

VICOVATION:::Vico-Marcus 5
Vico-Marcus 5. Built for the user who needs a total safety solution. Marcus 5 DUAL has front and back camera lens record at the same time. Both are the Full-HD 1080p ...

In the alternative, I might get to separate marcus 1's as both my vehicles have dual lighter plugs.

Here is a review: https://youtu.be/myCgsM5DCZc

I am also adding a gopro4 and Linda and I learning to use it together.

If anyone has something better, please let me know...

Day 22

Not really day 22, but the 22nd day I worked on this. I rarely work a full day, as my abilities are limited somewhat, but I usually get in about 4-5 hours.

Today I went back through and checked everything and made sure all was correct and tight. I still need to do the ABS sensor and extended break lines.

I placed the toy on stands and pulled the tires and wheels so I can swap the tires to some steel rims and then refinish the aluminum rims, which I will do at home on the back porch.

I then pulled the front Bumper to get ready for my Whitson Metalworks bumper, which is being finished up by Josh. It also gives me better access to the cooling system for mounting and connecting up the trans cooler. Worked on fabbing some mounting brackets for that project and deciding where, and exactly how, I will mount it. It is important that it be mounted with rubber bushings, or on the rubber bushing mounted Ac cooler, lest it rattle, and in the process rattle itself apart. I may try to find some better bushing material than what was included

I realized that I can slightly enlarge the existing mounting holes and mount half of the trans, to the AC cooler, and half to the frame. I posted several pics, including one that shows, how oh so close, the bottom left side hole is...it and the upper hole will be enlarge, I will split the difference, and then mount on the ac cooler mounts with stove washers to makes they do not pule through. (at least that is what I am thinking after cogitating on for a while to day).

I also posted a pic of the supervisor. She has a place to lay down on all sides of the project and she follows me from one location to the other to watch...she cannot stand not being with me, or not seeing what I am doing. Occasionally she will poke her head under the toy to see what I am doing and then go and lay(or is it Lie,) back down. She wants me to finish so we can go wheeling to her favorite desert running spots...

I received my seat covers tonight, and I am very pleased with the workmanship. In fact I think they are better made than the originals. I will update this with fitment when I get to the seats...

She is a rescue. I am certain she was trained as coyote dog, and in fact, was found in coyote trap. She had 7 fosters and homes before we took her. No one could handle her. I walked by her on the way into a pet store, and she was just laying there ignoring everyone. When I walked by she jumped up and nearly knocked me over. I tried to ignore her, and even told the fosters to give me a few days to think about it. I relented and agreed to foster her and work with her to calm her down.

Ah shit, another foster failure, we called the next day and told them to bring the adoption papers. At time I had a very loyal service dog, but aging, and I was worried they would not get on...they did like thieves, and in fact, when my Millie passed, Bella stepped right up to the plate.

Within a week I was letting her run, and she was coming to my call, whistle and responding to my hand cues. She will heel on the leash or off. When the adoption folks did a check up they were stunned, and one of them said, "she comes back to you, really?" As if that was something others had tried and failed at.

Knowing how to handle a field dog is a rare art in Utah, I reckon, except among a very few. In the South it is bred into us, and we never forget it, just like we never forget the taste of good shine or Bourbon.

Anyway, she is my faithful friend and companion and we look after each other.

Day 23

Sorted out the mounting of the cooler, fan, thermostat, and the horns.

The thermostat probe will not mount through the cooler, so I am epoxying it in place with a couple of dabs. I believe from my experience it will work fine, although I am usually using more robust sending unit. We shall see.

I made sure to isolate the system using either stock rubber mounts or edpm foam. The fans was mounted using the through radiator cooler mounting and I expect the will hold up fine consider the fan of the fan is about 1/4 of the fan...time will tell.

Slowly but surely, she is coming together...
