I just wanted to share my experience...so i got a letter in the mail explaining the recall. i called and made an appt to have my car done. it turned out that i went home not getting the recall done. i asked to speak to someone that would explain the recall to me. a man came out and gave me bs how they were going to make some modifications that would make my car safe. i asked if my gas pedal chrome covers o bought from toyota would be saved or if they couldn't be used. Toyota said i could use those pedals anymore, nor would they replace it with one that would work. i got offered a free oil change for my troubles. lol! i asked why my gas pedal needed to be cut and the man replied that some people were stacking multiple floor mats that were non toyota and they were getting stuck under the gas pedal. i then asked so if i use my stock floor mat i will be fine and he said basically ya. It is just a way to cover there ass for stupid people. IDK if this is all true or not but i have 120k miles on my car and never had a problem. my brother has an 06 t4r and doesn't really care and he got his cut. it looks weird and my brother said took a little while to get used to having one less inch on the bottom of his pedal.

I have my 2003 4runner in at the dealership for a radiator leak. I also advised the service rep regarding the floor mat recall notification. I told him that I have Weathertech floor mats - digifit floor mats for my 4Runner. He stated they will put those in the back and replace them with Toyota mats and check the brake software / accelerator pedal function. He said this relieves them from any liability and that I am free to put my Weathertech mats back in place if I wish...funny thing, he uses Weathertech in his Toyota.

I have the whole set of Digi-fit Weathertech floor mats for my 2003 4Runner...front / back / and cargo mats...fit perfectly and are stiff and robust...quality as it ought to be. I have the same for my wife's Altima. The mats make cleaning out the are easier.

I actually told the Dealership on three different occasions that I decline on the recall. I said from day 1 this whole recall back in 09 was horsecrap and I stand by the statement. Especially when it comes to my 4Runner...it's absolutely ridiculous. By the way does anyone have a picture of the new all weather floor mat that might replace my current 4Runner awfm.

going to get my pedal replaced with a new one.
the shaved pedal blows... it throws off the way i hit the gas .
luckily, no BS run around @ longo toyota. i called, the service guy ordered a new pedal, no questions asked. i'll chime in tomorrow when the rig gets the new pedal.
i'll ask if i can hang onto the shaved pedal as well.

I'm going to be a very angry technician if you get that pedal next day. Not because I hate you or anything, but our parts department told me that its on national back-order and I wouldn't be able to get one for my 4Runner for a couple months! :wtf:

Went in and had the recall mod taken care of and hate it. Cut the damn pedal in half (practically). As some one said earlier it bites. New a/w mats are half the weight, thickness, and depth of the originals. Not a chance these will last 5 years like the first set I had. :gun5:

My original carpeted mats have been in the attic since day one. I replaced them with Husky individual rubber mats, which, once in place, do not budge.
My recall notice is currently in the ignore file. I'll let them fix the "problem", when they agree to a permanent fix for my driveshaft clunk, which they now claim is my responsibility as they have decided THAT is a maintenance issue.
As for the Weathertech mats, I hope they work better than my Weathertech bug deflector, which is worthless.

Excerpts from the correspondence sent to me by Toyota Canada (March 2011) regarding the Potential Floor Mat Interference with Accelerator Pedal Safety Improvement Campaign for certain 2003 - 2009 4Runners.
" ... notifying you regarding a voluntary safety improvement campaign ..."
I immediately picked up on the word voluntary.
" ... the potential risk for floor mat interference with the accelerator pedal due to unsecured or incompatible driver floor mats."
" ... the potential risk ... is not due to a vehicle defect."
"The vehicle improvement will involve a modification to the accelerator pedal."
After reading what other T4R.org members were experiencing with this safety improvement, I was not interested in having my brake pedal modified. My all-weather mats are secure in their clips and not interfering with my gas pedal.
When I recently scheduled an oil/filter service at my local Toyota dealer, the recall notice popped up on their computer screen for my T4R. I advised them I was declining the safety improvement. They said I would need to sign a waiver. There is no mention in the original correspondence about declining or a waiver.
Even though I am passing on this safety improvement, I would expect it will still be on the Toyota system for my T4R should the next owner want it done.
I would much prefer a safety improvement campaign for the two seized front brake calipers I have had.

I suppose they would not consider the brakes a safety issue unless they seized while driving. Not familiar with your issue.
I shelved the pedal fix as well since I have Weathertech mats which just about eliminates the identified risk.
I don't think the risk of mats jambing the gas pedal is isolated to just the 4rnr either.
I wish that I would've checked here first. I would not have had them conduct this recall for me.

I didn't want to start a rant about seized brake calipers in this floor mat recall thread. Glad you got informed - and hope it doesn't happen to you.
