04 4runner V8 Sport 2uz-fe timing belt failure, aftermath and the repair

2uz fe thrown rod/hole in block

Hey gents

Sorry to revive an old thread but the user name says it all. Just had my 06 throw a rod and the repair shop said it blew a hole in the block.

Not normally a fan of wisdom of the crowds but T4R is definitely the exception. Not sure what to do as far as rebuild/used/re-man.

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Any determination on why your engine threw a rod?

Well a rebuild is out of the question, with a hole in the block there nothing left to rebuild.

Your least expensive option is going with a low mileage savaged engine from a savage yard, second option is the remanufactured engine...most expensive.

The shop I took it to did not provide that information. I did have a salvage guy come look at it and he said it sounded like a lifter issue and it needed oil. It never goes below halfway full.

The issue I'm running into is salvage engines are EXPENSIVE right now. I'm talking 3k for an engine with 98k miles is the best I can find. Even engines with 200k+ are going for 3k. Does that seem in the ballpark? I've seen other threads talking about getting engines around 1.5k. They were older threads to be sure but I guess I'm just shocked at jump in price.

I looked a couple years ago and LKQ had them for 3k as well. Car-part.com has some for 2500 right now, I'm sure taxes would take it up to 3k though. There's cheaper ones if you're willing to get one with more miles or do the leg work to find a local yard that has one. $1500 seems like a stretch though.

It's crazy how expensive used engines are considering how popular these trucks are.

Not that it will make you feel better about the price of a savaged engine...but remanufactured crate engine are going for around $4300 + a core charge of $450+/- which you would have to pay since your block has a hole in it and wouldn't be accepted as a core..so right at $4700 to $4800 and you still have to pay for the install, but you would have pretty much a brand new engine with a 3 to 5 year warranty (depending on who you buy from, Jegs is 3 years and Reman Engine is 5 years, both have unlimited mileage).

The second link you will have to have them send you a quote on a 2006 engine...but I did look at a 2004 V8 which did list the price at $4100 but marked down to $3900, and at the first link (Jegs) had both years at the same price.

Call me crazy, but I change the timing belt about every 120,000 miles. I also replace the water pump, thermostat, radiator hoses, serpentine belt, and flush and replace the coolant at the same time as well as change the plugs. 276,000 miles and never a breakdown. Oil and lube every 3K. Maybe I have spent more than buying a new engine but I know exactly what I have and have never had a problem:dance:

Any idea what compression I should be praying for on a 2UZFE vvti?
Looking at a truck that owner states has a bent valve (per his mechanic).
Flatbedded to his house started and backed in. Stalled when he put it in park.
(Initial problem was stalled when his daughter was driving).
Truck is super clean in and out. Tb, wp,coolant changed at 159,000 miles.
Stalled on daughter with 192,000 miles.

Can we tease out this coolant leak a bit more?

I've causally noticed my coolant level decrease about half a water bottle's worth of coolant each year, for the last three years since I got the belt and water pump preemptively replaced (30k on them).

Is there a possibility that I have the same problem as the OP? Theres coolant leaking on the timing belt and I cant see it....

Oh, the things I need to worry about lol

Difference between each cylinder:

I'm not going to say a small amount of coolant loss is normal on this engine but I know and have several customers that have this issue. On my 4.7 with 330K I put a tad of coolant in it every 3 or 4K miles. I don't have any external leaks and my compression is still at the very top of the range.
When you say half a bottle what bottle are you referring to?

Thanks for the info. Engine failed. Getting pulled and replaced with a donor. Found a bunch on car-parts.com
Called on a half dozen, just haven’t made any decisions yet. Also best place to get fsm is TIS? And can I download the entire manual?

Thanks again
