Hey guys! I drive a 2013 Trail Edition and my husband bought me some really pretty er.... I mean really tough looking 17" TRD wheels and now Im trying to decide on tires. I really want some 285/70 R17 Wrangler Duratracs but he says they are going to rub. I think he just doesn't want my truck to look cooler than his. Lol. I've been searching on here for the answer but I think the more I read the more confused I get. Can anybody tell me if 17" TRD wheels and 285 Duratracs will rub too bad? I don't get offroad much but I hope to in the future. Nothing to serious though. Can anybody help a gal out? Thanks!!

Thank you. I saw that. Hubby said the TRD wheels are different than my stock wheels so he isn't sure if the tire guide applies. He's going to buy the tires but he's making me do the homework. I need to be sure cuz if he tells me "I told you so" Im going to go pop the tires on his truck. lol

Scroll up the main 5 gen page and read "this is happening .... Bishops build begins. Same question. Pay attention to the advice from Ducmonsta. I have 285 70r 17 wild country xtx on stock rims. Have .85" spacers on front and had to remove mud flaps and move fender liner forward. No rub now on normal roads. Likely will have some rub if doing serious flexing. Good luck

Are these the wheels you're looking at?

I went with stock 265/70-17 General Grabber AT2 tires on a set of 17x8 wheels and have some rub at 3/4 right turn in reverse. Even after a 1.75" lift on the front end. So I do believe you will have some clearance issues with the taller/wider tire at least until you do the front fender and mud flap mods. I have yet to do that mod to mine, but it is on my to do list in the next week or so. Just out of curiosity what part of our wunnerful state are you in? I'm up in the Leesville/Ft Polk area.

Yep. Those are the wheels I have. I thinks hubby is about 2 Dos Equis away from ordering me a Toytec Boss lift so I don't have to worry about rubbing. Wish me luck!! lol. We live down in Broussard which is right next to Lafayette.

Perfect, u go first then I get to learn from u guys. Ordered bilsteins today to raise the front. Still bouncing between 265s and 285s.

LOL. I hope it worked! That's a nice area down there. I understand there is a Jeep club down there from friends who used to be members, so hopefully you can find some places to play in the dirt. The front fender mod is pretty easy. Just do a search for "5th gen front fender mod", and you will get a lot of hits. I imagine you will still need to do that much at a minimum. You almost have to for anything not involving stock tires and wheel widths.

If your not wheeling hard you'll be okay with the TRDs & DT 285's , just do the fender liner mode to push the front in a bit.

Lol. Thanks guys. This is "hubby". So like she said, a few too many beers last night got me thinking I should just save myself the headache and just get her a lift. Im looking at the Toytec Boss lift with Light Racing UCAs. I really doubt we'll ever do any hard wheeling so I don't see the need for going to crazy on the suspension lift. And since I do all the wrenching and maintenance on our vehicles I don't want a lift that will require a lot of adjusting or rebuilding or maintenance down the road. So before I pull the trigger I was hoping to get some opinions on that particular lift. Any help?

I wish I could get your wife and mine together. I get a few dos equis deep and order stuff I then have to hide from mine vs. her hoping I get such things.

It really depends on the tire and the vehicle, because the potential rub is so close either way. Unfortunately, that means just because the same tire doesn't rub for one member doesn't mean it won't for you or vice versa. However, it does appear to be a fairly easy fix with moving the fender liner in or reshaping it. I chose not to go that route. My tire guy was nice enough to mount up a 285 on my front rim and put it on and test it out for me - sure enough there was a pretty significant rub at less than full lock and with the tire at only about half pressure. Make sure to post pix when you are done. Duratracs or Trail Grapplers give these rigs a bad ass look without having to give up a whole lot in ride quality.

My sole opinion on the Toytec kit so far is "Man those red springs are purdy!" Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. There is a several page discussion about that kit here.

If budget was no matter I might have gone that route. But like you I don't expect to get into any real hard core off roading, so I went with the Bilstien 5100 lift/level kit for about $460. Not as tall but works for my purposes. If I had a do-over I think I might have opted for the OME 3" lift kit because it looks like it does all the same things as the Toytec for about 60% of the price (OME full suspension -- Click here for details). But at the time I made the decision for the lift the Bilstien kit was the only one in my budget and for my purpose that didn't simply involve spacers. And I just ended up buying a pair of 1.25" spacers for the rear anyway. The variety of options available out there is almost too vast to suggest what will work for you, so ultimately it will be your choice.

Regardless of how you go, if you do the install yourself be very careful with the ABS wire at the top of the front shocks. Rumor is it can be easily broken.

Yea. She's pretty cool about stuff like that but it can get expensive. I buy a motorcycle, she wants a motorcycle. I get a lift and big tires, she wants a lift and big tires. lol. Now she's trying to talk me into test driving a new Tundra today. Anyway, I just spent some time on the phone with Toytec and Im pretty sure Im going with the Boss kit with LR UCAs. I don't see the point of going crazy with billet UCAs and or reservoir shocks on a DD that is 95-98% street driven. I have over 5K in the suspension on my truck and its honestly a waste of money considering how many times its been offroad. I think the 285s will look perfect on her 4Runner and if I still have to mod the fender liners after the lift then so be it.

You should be okay with the tires if you do that much of a lift, especially if it's just for show. Mine is definitely a pavement princess too but I still like the taller, bigger tire look, but I didn't want to invest the money and modify things when I know full well this rig ain't doing any serious offroading, ever. Snow will be the only challenge it faces, which is why I chose mud/snow tread tires instead of trail tires.

My wife expects tit for tat too, but when I bought a bike, she wanted a car, and when I buy mods, she wants diamonds. LOL

Damn. Diamonds?? Ok. I'll stop complaining about suspension and tires. Lol. At least I'll get some enjoyment out of her 4Runner.

Thank you for the tip on the ABS wire. I can be a bit of a caveman sometimes when I have tools in my hand. lol

Well, today was a fun day. I ordered the Toytec Boss kit with LR UCAs and 285 Duratracs for my wife's TE. Then we stopped by the dealership so I could check out the new Tundras. Man those things are nice. So nice in fact that my 2014 5.7 Tundra 4X4 Crew Cab Limited with the TRD package will be here in 3 weeks. Woohoo!! lol After driving a 3/4 ton 4X4 Dodge diesel for the past 8 years that Tundra felt like I was driving a Caddy.

Picked up the 285 Duratracs today. Not installed yet but momma is happy. lol

Lol. I know. Right after I posted that I told my wife " These guys are going to think Im some kind of rich jerk trying to show off. Sadly that couldn't be further from the truth. After buying the lift and tires my wife and I might be eating Top Ramen for a while. lol. She's a good woman though so I don't mind busting my butt a little to make her happy. And buying the Tundra is pretty much a wash with trading in my Dodge. Those 5.9 Cummins diesel 4X4s have awesome resale/trade in value.
