20 inch wheels on LIMITED

Toyo Open Country AT II's on 20's

Some more 275/55R-20 shots. Toyo Open Country AT II's. Great tire, although quite expensive. Bone Stock 2010 Limited.

At nearly full lock, the outside wheel brushes the inner fender liner, I wouldn't even call it a rub.

Hey DC4R, I just noticed you are running 275/55/20s on stock LTD rims with spacers. I'm interested in this setup with the spacers and no lift. Tell us more about it, any rub?
Thanks

There is a lift. Daystar 2" but it barely looks lifted. The tires and spacers worked great. There is a slight rub on full lock when on a steep incline but its barely noticeable after the front fender mod.

I get a lot of compliments. Most think thats how the 4R comes stock these days.

I did run spacers on stock rims and tires for the first few months and it greatly improved the looks and handling with no rubbing at all.
Hope that helps

Would love to see more pics of your rig.

My wife and I purchased a used 2010 Limited about 7 months ago and knew that we'd be replacing the stock tires within about 10k miles. We got another 12k miles out of them including a trip to Mammoth in December when it snowed 2-3 feet in a couple of days- even w/ the bald tires the 4runner handled extremely well and had minimal slippage. But I digress...

I looked at a wide variety of tires and knew I was somewhat limited on sizes because of the narrow wheel. Any tire models or sizes that are listed in 5th gen 4runner limited forums, I've looked them up, looked at user reviews, read their of reviews on tirerack.com, cross-researched them, asked friends, dealers, etc. Needless to say, I like to know that I'm getting a good tire that's fun and capable w/o sacrificing safety for my family.

I'll cut to the point- we went w/ the Toyo Open Country AT 2's. I also strongly considered Nitto Terra Grapplers, Bridgestone Dueller AT 2's and Firestone Destination AT's. The Nitto's were the first tire I seriously considered but read mixed reviews on them. Bridgestone's looked great, but the reviews were better on the Destination AT's. The Destination AT's looked fantastic and the reviews were outstanding, but they were on national backorder. Enter the Open Country AT 2's- it's a newer tire so there weren't as many reviews out there; there definitely weren't a lot of reviews from 5th gen limited owners. In fact, pyrat's post and pictures were the only ones I found from someone who had put these on a 5th gen limited. Thanks pyrat! I couldn't find many bad reviews about these and many said they were a great improvement to an already good tire. The 65k mile warranty intrigued me and was a pro over the Destination AT's- they've got a 50k mile warranty. Last, but not least, these came highly recommended from a good friend in the industry and the price was right.

Just got these installed yesterday and I've done about 20 miles of city driving and 50 miles on the highway. Some of these are a given considering the tread left on my stock tires, but after very few miles, here are my thoughts:

*Changes the look of the truck and makes it look like more like a 4runner should- the new tires appear to raise the truck a hair and fill out the wheel wells as they should
*Grip is significantly greater
*Truck feels more solid- I felt, at times, like I was riding on stilts w/ the stock tires
*No rub at all. Like pyrat mentioned, it brushes the inner fender liner- it's not noticeable and does make any noise.
*Road noise is minimal- I notice it between 35-50 MPH and I can hear them on the highway, but it's just a hair louder than the stock tires.
*Ride seems a bit stiffer- this may be because they're brand new tires and inflated to proper PSI- the stock tires were probably a few PSI lower than they should have been.
*They feel a tiny bit heavier when braking and accelerating

I'll report more on these as I rack up the miles. We've got a trip planned to Mammoth soon- hopefully it snows a bit and we can test in different conditions. Based on initial impressions and drive, I love them. I'd highly recommend them. For everyone concerned that they won't fit on the wheel, they'll be too big, etc.- I've read all the concerns and I had all of the same concerns. The guy who installed my tires said they went on just fine.

Anyways- this is my first post- "long-time reader, first time poster." I figured it was time to give back a little since I used this forum to do extensive research on putting 275/55/20's on my 2010 Limited. Thanks a ton to everyone who's posted pictures and reviews on mounting this tire size on their rigs. I'll post my own soon!

How big of a spacer did you put in? looks great!

New tires on OEM 20" wheels. I really debated whether I should go with 22" and 305s, but in the end, I had to go with the truly cheaper option.

Specs:
General Grabber UHP
275/55R20 - recommended for 7" width
Stock 20x7 wheels, no wheel spacer/adapter, no lift

Definitely gives it a much better stance already as well as a little more sidewall height (31.9" tall compared to 31.6" tall OEM size) and width.

Wheel spacers/adapters to come soon as well to push them out further.

definitely liking it. What spacer are you going with?

Update- We've put around 5k+ miles on the tires and have no complaints. Mileage went down to 17.7 from 19.2, but that was expected. No rubbing nor issues at high speeds. I'll circle back on this when we have some rain and more adverse weather.

I'm still up in the air on whether I will put new rims on my LE, but my current plan is to Blizzaks on the OE rims come November if I have not purchased new wheels. Has anyone been running 275/55/20 Blizzaks on the OE wheels without issue?

I went to (2) local Discount Tires here in town and both said they wouldn't put a 275/55/20 tire on the LE wheel. They said it will void the tread warranty and I can just see Toyota blaming an incorrect tire/wheel combo as the reason for anything that may go wrong with your T4R.

I would have zero safety concerns about going the 275/55/20 route but the fact it will void your tire warranty and result in crowing/premature wear of the tire, I'm now on the verge of dumping the OEM 20's and picking up a brand new set of 4th Gen LE 18" wheels and some Michelins. Currently working on (2) dealers now trying to get the best price on the wheels.

Thank a lot Toyota for putting a 7" wide 20" wheel on an SUV. Absolutely BRILLIANT!

That'd be me. They've been on for a year now and with around 9k miles look new. Let the snow fly. The soft rubber adds some mush to turns but they are great overall. I've been meaning to update my Blizzaks post from last year and hope to do so with pics soon.

I was in the exact same boat as you. My local tire shop wouldn't put 275's on my 20's. I ended up buying a set of 2013 Trail wheels and tires with 300 miles on them for $700. New Yokohama's would have cost me over $1200.

I just took the plunge and bought some new 4th Gen 18" LE wheels after one final discussion with Tire Rack regarding the 275/55/20's. The new wheels should be here next week and I'll get them mounted with some 265/65/18 Michelin LTX M/S2's as 99% of my driving is highway/city.

Now I just need to decide if I should sell the OEM 20's or hang onto them until it's time to sell the car down the road.

Gracias. We'll see if my local tire shop will put these on.

I'm not so concerned about the tire warranty, but I am more concerned about the safety and if Toyota tried to nullify my warranty. Seems the safety issue is likely overblown...especially with some 275 tires actually being designed all the way to 7". Still, I really hate that Toyota did this. Nonsense engineering.
