2006 Scion iPod HU Cable

No luck on salvaged '06+ Scions in Austin. There's a guy on the RAV4 forum that claims to have the part numbers and schematics for making your own elusiveiPod third wiring harness. I've hinted he should make about 50 of them and make a bundle-o-money doing so on all the forums I've searched for this stupid harness today. We'll see if he PM's me back with the goods and I'll post it up here when he does. I'm installing my HU without the iPod connector unitl I have a workable solution. Gives me a chance to clean the spilled coke my mother-in-law saw fit to give me when she took my Runner to the store....arghh!!! I know...MILs should not drive Runners!!!:bash:

I emailed the guy you got the radio from. I told him I needed all three cables and described them. He told me all three were included. Do you have pics yet of cables? I'd like to what you are missing?
 
Well, he is wrong. There is a misconception among resellers of the Scion T1806 and an ignorance on the part of Toyota (as the manufacturer of Scion) and their parts departments. None of them realize that this radio is being stuffed into everything Toyota makes that isn't a Scion. They all think that the harnesses they are providing are the end all because they beleive all of us are stuffing the HU into a Scion, but alas, we are not. The harness from the back of the radio to the intermediate iPod harness assembly (the one with the "iPod" door on it) is a part of the dash wiring harness for the Scion and is not sold separately.

Bummer.

Now, if you live in a big enough city that has some salvaged '06+ Scions that had the T1806 installed, you can pick-n-pull the missing harness like other members have. But if you are in the same boat as me with no crapped-out Scions nearby, then you are at the mercy of some electrical wizard who can figure out how to solder the intermediate connector to the prongs on the back of the radio. Hmm, if there was only a schematic of the radio we'd be somewhat okay to approach this, but I've been hard pressed to find any such diagram on the net.

Bummer.

So, there are these fellas on the RAV4 forum that have managed to get part numbers for the two connectors (the radio end male, and the opposite female end that plugs into the intermediate harness) and have figured out how to wire it all together, either with or without the schematics. That's were I am stuck right now, at the mercy of the iPod harness wiring gods.

I did stuff the radio in tonight. Very easy to do. Not much of a difference in sound quality but you can tell it has a bit more power. Wish I had the money for an AVIC-Z1, but then my avatar would say Need More Time To Buy Things.

Maybe you could find someone on tis forum that has a nearby Junk yard, that could pull it for you.

They salvage yard shouldn't charge them much for it. You could pay them for the effort.



I would, but my salvage yard only had on Scion, a TC.
 
Might be asking alot, but if either of you have the time to look at that elusive third harness...yes this probably means opening up the dash again, you could map for me the wire colors to the pin locations and the rest of us would be set. From there we could cut the ends off and do a little soldering and be done with it. The intermediate is a 13-pin and the radio is a 16-pin. I'll pay you for your time via Paypal if you decide to do it.

It would actually be better if you mapped the connector pins to the color-coded wires on both ends. I'm not looking at it now, but the situation is that I need to get 13 color-coded wires from the intermediate harness connected, correctly, to the 16 pin connector on the back of the radio [three pins on the back of the radio are not used but the 16-pin male connector "maps" the 13 wires into the 16 pins in the manner that is necessary to not blow up the radio and work the iPod]. So a map would look something like this:

16-pin on back of radio numbered from left to right, top to bottom as you are looking at it:

Orange over white wire - pin #1
White over orange wire - pin #2

and so on.
 
It was easier for me to make a couple of diagrams. Both of these diagrams are looking into the connectors on the side where the wires go in, or looking into the slots where they connect (such as into the HU). There are two sets of three wires that are grouped together and are shielded. I read on Scionlife.com that these wires must be shielded to protect from interference.

The grouped wires:
9,10,11 on the HU side connect to 12,13,14 on the Ipod side.
The colors are the same on both ends.

13,14,15 on the HU side connect to 1,2,16 on the Ipod side.
The colors are not the same coming out of the shielding - There is a solid blue and solid red, but the gray turns to aqua/silver.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense.

Excellent work. With your diagrams and the schematics on scionlife.com, I'm going to call a harness maker I found on the internet and get some prices for making this harness at different lengths. Thanks for taking the time to post this Ed.

Am I reading what I think I'm reading?? May us Toyota drivers with Scion HU's FINALLY be able to connect our iPods to them?? We shall see... btw... I'm willing to pay someone to make a harness for me and so are alot of others on here. someone please make it happen! :beer:

There are a number of us on different internet forums that have the same question/problem so forgive me if you've been asked this already. Scion has an upgraded head unit that fits into many models of Toyota vehicles. However, unless you install that HU (Scion/Pioneer T1806) back into an '06+ Scion, you will be missing a harness that allows you to connect and control your iPod. The missing harness, one that goes from the back of the HU to what I've termed as an intermediate iPod harness, is actually a part of the dash wiring harness and does not come as a separate part number that all of us could order from Toyota. I have the schematics and pinout diagrams for the missing harness but not the knowhow to get it done. This is a fairly popular DIY upgrade for many Toyota vehicles so I would think there could be quite a demand for any harness you could build and put on your website. I for one would make sure your business is placed on no less than three Toyota vehicle forums.

Please let me know if you can help and I will be happy to send whatever I have to get it done. Call or email anytime.

Wow this is great, I sold my scion unit and upgraded to nav, but at least now i know if i want to sell the nav I can go back to the scion unit and actually get to use the ipod feature.
If you cant find someone to actually make the harness you could always wire one up yourself and solder directly to the pins and to the other harness. thats what i would do now that you have the pinouots.
 
I'd do that but I'm just afraid of burning something up, I'm a medic...plugging holes and restarting hearts is my thing. I'll give installer.com a chance to respond and see what solution they can come up with. I'm also looking locally for a technowizard who can make it. I'll update if it can happen either way.

So, I went to the dentist today for a filling...I know, what does this have to do with the HU.

Welllll, as I'm leaving the building, novacaine drool and all, what do I spy sitting in the parking lot outside but a smiling Scion xB. Hot damn, got to check out the radio it has. Sure enough it has the base radio. I spin 180 degrees back into the dentist's office and promptly ask..."who's Scion is that out there and what year is it?" Well, that's my Scion and it is a 2006 says the fine young lady who was sucking out my spit with one of those spit sucking things. "Oh yeah" I said, and then proceeded to spin my elusive iPod harness story and finagle my grubby hands upon that sucker.

Long story short...yes, it's already long, I GOT IT! 2.5 hours of knuckle bleeding later and that stupid harness was mine. 20 minutes on the Runner and I can now listen and control my iPod via the Scion HU. I had her pretty Box Car washed, waxed, and filled with petrol for the trouble and we both went our happy ways until the next tooth emergency.

Wow. I can't believe you talked that lady into letting you take her car apart. It only takes about a week for the knuckle bleeding wounds to heal.
 
I gave up trying to find a cheap Scion 'IPod Customer Cable', the end of the three cables that plugs into the Ipod, and decided to pay a local dealer for it - $82-$102! Before tax! I found that Toyota of Dallas will actually let you order parts online at a discounted price. It doesn't save that much, but it is something. The cable ended up costing $70 ($54 + shipping of $11 + tax). Maybe if you are out of state, they wouldn't charge sales tax.
