2010,2011,2012 4runner Dual Battery (Tray$25, no Power Steering Reservoir relocation)

Thank you for the in-depth ideas about the durability (strength) of this battery tray that I never think about it. The supplier said this is steel material but not sure if it is strong enough to secure the Odyssey Battery PC1200 in long term. The empty slot is a flat surface with 3 screws holding it. How to figure it out then? Do I need to weld another bottom layer of steel to make it more rigid at the base?

I just researched another thread which talks about 2013 4runner dual battery setup. It uses a battery tray which does not sit on a flat surface with only 3 screws holding the tray. Is there any potential issue of this kind of setup? (pls see the attached photos and the link below)

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/126636-installing-dual-battery-2013-gen5-4runner.html

The ARB tray kit is very nice, very professional. Sorry I am not such a tech guy to drill/bend the Power Steering Reservoir bracket, hose modification. It would be appreciated to give more ideas if I just want to do a minimum modification without great tools in my garage.

Doctor Battey Isolator (150Amp)

I would like to seek anyone’s comment on the Battery Doctor Isolator (150 amp). Will this be high enough for use on a 4runner?

If I want to connect to higher power accessories (e.g. Fridge) to my 2nd battery, do I need a higher power battery isolator? Or there is no such relationship since I just use the 2nd battery to power supply my fridge?

How about to handle the amp max output of the 4runner’s alternator? Is there any relationship to choose a higher power battery isolator to cope with the alternator output?

Thanks

150A should be plenty. I can't imagine a portable fridge drawing more than 15A peak (motor starting) and 2-5A continuous. The only things I can think of that would draw enough current to worry about would be large/multiple air-compressors and or starting your engine which you would normally do off your main battery vs your aux.

2010 FJ Cruiser Dual Battery (Battery Doctor 150 amp)

I just find an application Battery Doctor (150Amp) in 2010 FJ Cruiser. Photos have been included for easy of reference. If you go to the site below, you can use Google translator to translate it to English :

http://www.toyota4arab.com/forum/t205608.html

Is there anyone has experience in using this product (Battery Doctor 150 Amp)?

In case of jump start, does this kind of battery isolator provide sufficient power to start the engine?

Most of the isolator claim to support max current from 150-250 amp, is this good enough to start car engine in case of main battery failure?

I have the contact name and Email address of the battery tray supplier. If you need his Email, I can send it to you. He is a nice guy and willing to modify the tray without additional charges.

I attached the photos of the modification requirement that I sent it to him. He really did a good work and ship the modified tray to me.

Please feel let me know.

** Yes, need to paint the tray. I don't know what kind of paint to use as well **

.

Definitely need his contact info ASAP! It would have been nice if you had included this information earlier.

The amperage rating listed for an isolator should be for continuous current. Most should be able to handle significantly more amperage for momentary usage like you would have starting a vehicle. I exchanged some emails with National Luna about their 85A isolator and if it would be able to handle starting the vehicle from the aux battery if the main battery was dead. Their 85A Isolator can handle 400A peak and they said it wouldn't be a problem starting the vehicle from the aux battery. The Cole Hersee isolator can handle up to 750A momentary.

Battery Terminals Position

I would like to seek your expert comment on the position of the battery terminal of this installation. There are four options that I can install the battery. Each option has its pros and cons in relation to :

1. Positive Terminal near the Power Steering Fluid Reservoir. Would it be dangerous in case of short circuit to trigger flame or fire if the positive terminal close to it (power steering fluid is flammable?)?

2. Positive Terminal near the body of 4runner. Would it be a concern to short circuit the body itself?

Please give your expert advice of the options (1-4) in the order of your preference, see attached photos.

Thanks

I don't see option 2 and 3 being possible. You can't go and change the polarity of the battery terminals. Personally I would go with the terminals near the body since it would make for cleaner battery cable routing.

There is an option allows Odyssey PC1200 the positive terminal is on the left or right when order:

Odyssey PC1200

If this is possible to place positive terminal on either left or right. Please give ideas, which options (1-4) you prefer in order?

2010,2011,2012 4runner 2nd battery safety belt

Hi,

I would like to seek your expert comment since I found something new of the battery platform (where the battery tray sits on the top).

There are some gaps under this platform so that I can run through a safety belt to further secure the battery and its tray.

Would you please give your ideas about this? What is your view?

In addition, I still need your ideas about the position of the battery terminal position (facing the Power Steering Fluid Reservoir or the 4runner body?? which side is the best)

Thank You

I think if you get the three bolts threaded into the battery platform a safety cable is probably not needed and might be more work than it is worth? That battery looks pretty light and is probably not going anywhere :)

As far as facing the terminals, the paranoid side of me says to face it away from the fender well so you have less of a risk of hitting the bare terminals to the chassis and arcing; BUT it seems like you have plenty of clearance so you might be fine facing it either direction?

Facing it towards the chassis would probably allow you to run your wires much cleaner though.

It all comes down to how secure the tray mount is. If it holds the battery securely with no wiggle room then we're fine. Most battery trays use side j hooks and a cross bar over the top that you can tighten down.

I think having the terminals toward the side wall (away from the reservoir) as it should allow for cleaner routing of cabling. When cabling up the aux battery we will need to run a cable between the negative terminals and a cable from the aux battery positive terminal to the isolator. I'm imaging the positive cable being ran along the side wall up to the firewall and across over to the driver side where I'm planning on installing the isolator. The negative cable may be able to be ran along the top of the radiator support above the plastic coverings to shorten the cable run. I'll need to look closer at it to verify the routing and if it will be cool enough location.

2010,2011,2012 dual battery wiring path diagram

This is to summaries the ideas of the wiring connection and battery terminals (+ve and -Ve) positions:

1. Please refer to the attached diagrams for the wiring path and battery terminals positions.

2. There is a chassis ground connection point besides the 2nd battery(see photos). Is it possible to connect the -ve terminal to this (i.e. on the body directly) instead connecting the batteries (-ve terminals on main and 2nd battery) with a separate ground cable?

3. Your expert advice would appreciated.

It's recommended that the two batteries have a direct ground cable connected between them versus using the vehicle as a common ground.
