2014 LED tail lights

I took off the two 10mm bolts and how do you get a hold of the tail light to get them off!! I've tried to pull and they don't want to come off!! Any pics on how to take them off...Please.

Since you took the liberty of posting in TWO taillight threads, I'll answer this:

1)- remove the two nuts
2)- pull on the taillight. Hard, and straight towards the back of the vehicle. Pull until it feels like you might break something, then pull a little harder.

I just received my TWC lights and fit and finish is pretty much stock. Everything fit perfect except the two metal pins that snap into retaining clips on the body. It maybe that the 2013 model uses different clips than 2014. The pins insert fine bit do not lock in as stock do. Once bolted down though it isn't noticible. I'm very happy at the moment with the TYC quality. It really looks great on the grey too

After reading all posts about TYC lights, I've decided to pull the plug on them.
Ordered on Wednesday, $229 and six days later there is result.

It's wanted thank you all who did this tail lamp swap and posted all the great info on here. My drivers side factory light broke and I was going to have to replace it. Finding this thread while I was researching how to take it off and decided to change both sides to the newer led version. Again thanks everyone.

Anyone else with TWC lights not have a super solid tight snap into the factory retaining clips. I bumped one of the lights over the weekend and it came loose. It was still bolted but because the TWC pin doesn't positively engage it's not "locked"

Well, Rockauto is out of the left side from TYC, not sure if the other parts from "various manufacturers" will be the same since there's no photo of the part, so I went with Amazon.

And even amazon seems low on these parts. Had to get each side from different suppliers!

Must be everyone here buyin' up the damned stock!:tsk:

Lights showed up today! 9 whole minutes to swap them out! This has got to be the easiest mod I've ever done!!! Open hatch, pull light covers, unplug wires, remove 4 10mm nuts, pop lights out, reverse order with new led tails, DONE!!!


Mine were also hard to pop out, but I just used one of my squeegee cards to give me some leverage in popping them free. A putty knife would do just the same, if you wrapped it with a paper towel.

And for the other poster that said the lenses were super loose, mine seem to be very tight in there, but I noticed I had missed the plastic clip the first time I set the housing into the body, pulled it back, made sure it slid into the white plastic panel clip and screwed the 10mm nuts down tight. They don't move at all!

Tyc lights

So when you order the TYC lights from Amazon or wherever will I still need to order the Toyota oem harness's and retainers or are the tyc lights plug and play

Nope! I didn't order anything else, other than the two lights! Its truly plug-n-play!

When you do install it, use a hard plastic card or putty knife wrapped in something so you don't scratch the body under the lens. Place it under the plastic here:

Pry it outwards while pulling on the outer part of the housing at the same time, it will pop right out. Oh yeah, make sure to take the nuts off the back of the lamp first!!! :thumb:

I run a repair shop and I deal alot with Toyota. I decided to call the parts guy I always deal with and I spoke to him about the tail lamps. At first, when he looked it up he said that he would need a vin since all 3 levels of the 4R use different tail lamps. But then he looked further and found that all 3 supersede into one # for the L and one # for the R. The part #'s are as follows:

Right= 81551-35400
Left= 81561-35390

List price is $318.12 each and my price is $270.42 each.

Jumping in on an old topic. Am I to understand that a 2014 OEM 4Runner light will fit a 2012 model 4Runner?

If this is true, what are those part numbers? I'm living in Georgia and will gladly order a set to class up my truck.

The 2010-2013 tail lights use little electrical contacts instead of plugs for the lights. The harness will convert them to normal light plugs, like those used in the new tails.
I found the lowest price to be at Toyota Parts Express, though it did take a bit over a week to arrive.
The tail lights themselves I bought from RockAuto. I opted for the CAPA certified ones because why the heck not
