Hi I am looking to get a little extra power out of my runner

I have a 2014 Trail edition with kdss

I was thinking of doing a Cold air intake and maybe a chip if i could find a good one.

Does anyone have a link for something that you recommend.

Congratulations on your new 4R Trail, a great choice! To be perfectly honest, outside of the "gimmick market" e.g., fuel additives, racing oil mixtures, or those gizmos that make claims to "give 20 to 30% more horse power and cut fuel consumption by 35 to 40%", Oh and my personal favorite... "magic snake oil elixir" that's only found in the far, far east, from a "female" King cobra, in a dark cave during a lunar eclipse, but only on the Chinese new year... :ohwell: Okay, a little creative license taken here "OF COURSE", but you get the point!

I don't know of a cheap, reliable method of gaining a noteworthy margin of HP that doesn't involve a partial engine "teardown" or a high performance fuel/ignition/valve timing control system swap. There are some here however, that have managed to squeeze out a measurable margin of extra ponies. For that though, I think you should speak with [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION]; I think he had posted (somewhere on here) an actual HP test report of substantial increase, 290-310 IIRC, from a 4L, 270 HP base V6.

As far as "Cold air intakes" go, they don't actually increase HP. The way it works is: When the fuel mixture is cooler, like when you first start up, the gasoline is mostly in a droplet form in the IM, which means it's much denser in that state. However, as the engine (and the air around it) heats up, the droplets start to evaporate so there's actually less fuel (regarding fuel to air ratio) in the mixture; or should I say, it has less flammable properties in an atomized state because it's less dense.

A cold air intake system has an 'R factor' (a unit value of thermal resistance for a particular material) much like the insulation in your home, keeping the cool air in, and the hot air out. But it can only slow down the process of heat transfer (that's why it's rated differently w/different materials). The air outside of the hood is usually cooler than the air inside of it; hence the term "Cold air intake"... a bit misleading I'm afraid, but all things being relative...!

The "instant power cards" or "Chips" as they're called... still have yet to perform up to their claim, at least in the eyes of "Consumer Report Magazine", "Car and driver", "Road and track", "edmunds", and JD Power/asso. So... BEWARE! :eek: Best to you!

Oh, forgot to mention. I just noticed that, that's one doozy of a steep incline you're parked on there. Your money might be better spent on some high Performance, "Over sized Rotors and Calipers"; looks like you'll be needing them! :lookout: LOL!
 
The 120/150 platform vehicles (4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser) all have factory cold air intakes as they pull air from the passenger inner fender.
 
Not cheap but Bully Dog cracked the Toyota programming code. They are the only ones to my knowledge of reprogramming the stock ecu.

This stuff WORKS. Okay! It's tried and true. I have countless charts, tables, graphs, pie charts, tables, comparisons, maps, more charts, even more comparisons, and did I mention tables?

I can attest to this stuff. My dashboard tells me I get a 500 miles fuel range and then when I get to half a tank it drops back to 90 miles to empty. But the point is the stuff works for the first half tank of gas!

Hahaha, I couldn't help it. I know you'd appreciate the over-the-top argument and humor, recent posts in other threads in mind...

To the OP... good luck on your search. I think a CAI will prove to be a waste of money and I've tried searching for more over-the-top modifications (supercharger) but to no avail. I've only found them for Tacos. Hopefully there will be some alternative power mods. The underpowered V6 is a big talking point for many 4Runner enthusiasts.

Hahaha! I enjoy a rousing exchange of conflicting views from time to time, provided the other party(s) understands the principles of which their theory is based. I can't have a dream one night, think that it must be true cause it seemed so real in the dream, wake-up and then post this......... 'fairy tail' in dispute of someone else's carefully prepared 'build thread' or 'mod' and fact based presentation; unless... their theory is plagued with holes and so I post the facts to eradicate his/her delusion. Sometimes that's needed to dispel any myths, propaganda, or folklore that will later become "the rule"!

This is true! As [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] has brought to our attention, our 4Runners already have a "cold air intake" which draws cool air in from beneath the right front fenderwell. To purchase one with "TRD" and a toyota (longhorn) logo on it would look pretty cool (imho), but that's where it ends... purely aesthetic,

The first place I checked was TRD's website... :/

You are dreaming. Nobody has cracked it esp Bullydog. Their 1K electronics run over the top of OEM ECU's (toyotas) not with or instead.

The issue is that Toyota does make a TRD Supercharger kit for the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, but it is the SINGLE VVTi unit. Their kit is designed for the Tacoma's Carry-Over engine and actually has its own Factory Re-Flash (as opposed to say the 2UZ-FE 4.7L TRD Supercharger kit where the end-user had to get a stand alone ECU for it.)

There were statements last year I believe by Toyota at SEMA that there would be a TRD Supercharger kit for the FJ Cruiser with a Factory Re-Flash (which is the DUAL VVTi 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 that the 5th Gen 4Runners also share), but that will most likely not translate to the 5th Gen 4Runners. Not to mention that there would be no factory support more than likely since you'd be installing it on an "unapproved" vehicle with a Re-Flash not designed for it.

:ohwell: well now I'm sad... but seriously I probably wouldn't spend the $5k or so on a supercharger. I just want a bit more power. I would have been happy with around 315hp and a reasonable torque range.
 
Instant HP and torque increase. Not cheap...

Don't hate. Still have the 4runner.

My question is then this - how do they make the claims on the gains with a CAI if the 4R already comes with one? Is the flow improved in a new CAI (less restrictive)? Or is it a combination of replacing the full plumbing/breathing system (intake, headers, cats, muffler, etc.)? I guess I'm just trying to figure out if their claims are false - how can they continue to advertise these supposed gains?

What precisely is their claim?

Even replacing all that you listed above will not increase hp. Sorry. Now if you included "throttle body" and "ecu reflash" then you would have something but on this vehicle making it breathe and exhaust easier will have extremely limited effects.

Supercharger + ECU reflash
Turbocharger + ECU reflash
Larger throttle body + ECU reflash + Exhaust mods

Those are the only ways. Anything else is just for show.

Now if you can find a spot at sea level to live that has cold temperatures and high barometric pressures and low humidity then you can increase HP for free.

As you know, your opinion, and mine are protected by the 1'st amendment, which protects my right to claim that my product works better than yours based on my perception of this product, and that alone.

Another thing might be an increased "R-Value rating" which only means that they've raised the 'relative heat transfer resistance value' of the product by a nominal amount, example: A 1" thick roll of fiberglass (Owens Corning) may have an "R-Value" of 3.14, where as a roll of 'Kevlar' of relative thickness may have an R-Value of 5.5 because of it's inherent ability to resist heat transfer from one side of the material to the other.

So the factory CAI may be made of PVC or neoprene where as an aftermarket product, an impregnated composite of "carbon-fiber/mica/epoxy", so it may tend to resist the ambient underhood temperatures a little better than the O.E. product, and there-by maintaining a cooler air intake temperature; "only a theory w/o basis".

PS: "It still doesn't increase the HP one bit!"

I monitored my intake air temp today and had about 10-16 degrees above ambient in town and between 6-8 hwy so nothing too crazy. So even if you can drop this a bit it won't make any real difference.

Which is heat soak in the area of the sensor and ductwork. Going to get the same result with a "cold air intake"

The claims are just as they're posted on any webpage regarding the modifications - dyno tests b&a, air volume increases b&a, air temp, etc.

I'm not arguing/disagreeing that there aren't better/more proper ways of increasing HP/trq (charging or serious NA tuning) - replacing plumbing would effect the HP/trq gains, but you would loose any noticeable "gains" in the lose from the fly to the ground. I mean plumbing only ever gains 10-20 HP in most cases. The main gain I find is in the responsiveness of the vehicle. An ecu flash would also be preferable as well as you stated.

I'm simply wondering what these companies are doing to produce the numbers they last claim to (again, mainly dyno test increases) because we're all basically claiming that they're lying according to our posts (Hopefully that makes sense).
